Show morePhotograph dated Oct. 17, 1941. Original caption reads: Bradley Road Sewer: This view is taken from a point near the intersection of North Avenue looking easterly toward the Poor Farm. This picture was taken after the North End Sewer construction had been completed and numerous large and small pine trees had been eliminated on the southerly side of the street as well as some excavation as shown in the right foreground bordering Ethan Allen Park. Note that the electric light and telephone pole line has been removed and established on the northerly side of the street parallel to the centerline. A sidewalk has been petitioned to be constructed on the northerly side (left hand) of this street which can be readily seen will require the removal of several trees if constructed in the regular location, one foot from the street line. A WPA project was proposed for regrading, widening and generally improving the street but owing to lack of WPA men because of War Defense work this project will be postponed indefinitely.

Show morePhotograph dated Nov. 21, 1940. Original caption reads: WPA (Work Projects Administration) Project No. 665-12-1-38 This view is taken from a point exactly on the City limits on Grove Street looking in a north-westerly direction. The pavement area as far as shown in this view is only a temporary surface. No telford base or penetration surface having been constructed for the last 1,000 feet because the project for the sewer and water mains was not continued to the City limits as originally intended. All grading was done, however, and a corrugated metal culvert with concrete headers and catch basins was constructed in the ravine as shown by the location of white guard posts in the center of this picture.

This view shows the construction of the North End Sewer in front of the George Farrington [1106 North Ave.] and the Ralph Thayer [1076 North Ave.] residence opposite the entrance to the Burlington Rendering Company's plant. This section of the project is a 15" sewer being constructed entirely with hand labor, using sledge hammers and wedges for excavating through the frost. The Universal Crane used for pulling sheeting and handling materials on the job can be seen in the distance where the excavator is being used for installing the 18" pipe. The depth of the sewer at this location is approximately 12-13 feet.
