Planned last month (December) to go to Seattle next year - They laugh at me. January Wed 1 All attended the Fireman's Ball last night and had just a dandy time. Margaret came yesterday and Leslie came day before. Leslie was too tired to go to the dance but Guy went. Margaret, Helen and I went to walk in the afternoon. Bill's birthday yesterday Felt's singing or- chestra furnished music it was fine. Colder today and very slippery. This morning M & I went to bed for a hour and this afternoon went skating - This evening Guy, Grace, Leslie, Robert and Jim were here we played card & Jenkins and sang 'till 12 oclock. Had ice-cream Lots of fun too. January Thur 2 Perfect day. Margaret and Bill didn't get up un- til nearly nine. M, Helen and I met 'Metz' at 10:17 then went for a walk. M. & I read and visited all the afternoon. M is afraid she's going to have the grip. I went down town about 4 oclock and did a few errands. Leslie brought me home. Girl's Club in the evening. Rob went on evening train came up but saw too many girls so didn't come in, telephoned. We read 'a comedy of conscience'. M. & I talked until one oclock. January Fri 3 Got up early as M. and Leslie went on the 7:45 train. Beautiful day hated to have M. go. Didn't do much work after coming home from the train, Mother and I read. After dinner Helen and I went to walk I met Mr. Beeden. We call- ed on Metz and Nell. Choir rehearsal in the evening. Cold night. All went to bed at ten oclock. The first night this week I've been asleep before twelve. Robert and Leslie were here this morning. This is Robert's mark. [image] January Sat 4 Cold and cloudy. It has snowed by spells all day - I went thro all the music this morning and sorted it. Clean ed the hall closet. Dusted halls stairs and bathroom and got parlor and sitting room into shape for over Sunday. Mother made three apple pies. We had orange mouse [mousse] for dinner good. I wrote Marjorie, Loula, and Mary this afternoon. Went down town at 4:30. Went over to Wedgwood's a few minutes. I'm going to play the piano and read a little while then going to bed early. January Sun 5 Coldest day we've had. The wind has blown hard all day. Rather small attendance at church. Five received into membership. Read all afternoon 'The Chase of the Golden Plate'. Alice and Helen came over. Mr. Ham came to ask me to teach Miss Grey's class a day or so as she is ill. Went around Allie's way and had a brum dandy. Evening service beginning a series of meetings. Aunt Harriet's brother Warren died Friday. Aunt Margaret came home from the sanitorium today. Going to finish my book. January Mon 6 Another cold day. I taught Miss Grey's school and enjoyed it very much. Stopped in to see Nell on my way home. Met Helen up town and we walked awhile and went down to the library. No lights tonight so Allie closed at five. We walked up together. Sewed all evening on my pillow for mother. Letter from Maurine and one from Magaret today. January Tues 7 Warmer but clouded feels like snow. I taught again today. R & L were here all the morning. Miss Grey is better and will probably be able to teach tomorrow. I have a big cold sore that made its appearance this morning Its started to snow at about 4 oclock and has kept it up. Stayed home all the evening played the piano, sewed and read aloud from 'The Lady of the Decoration' to father until nearly 11. We finished it. Fine book. January Wed 8 There was a nice snow on the ground this morning so that we have just about enough for sleighing now. Worked around this morning and went down town early it was beautiful while the sun was out. Helen walked home with me and we talked awhile. Its growing colder tonight Father and Mother have been read- ing and playing 'back-gammon'. I've been playing the piano ever since supper. Gail is spending the night with Mary Morse as her people are away. Postal from Grace all well. January Thur 9 Beautiful day. Cooked all morning and sewed the pillow. Mother and I hurried with our work and got out at 2:30. I bought some new, heavy, grey gloves. Mother went calling and Helen and I went to walk. We called on Mary Moulton who is sick with a hard cold. I came home in time to fill a cream cake and took half of it over to Guy's. Club in the even- ing at wedgwood's. Gail stayed with Mary again. Jim took them up after club. January Fri 10 Another beautiful sun- shiny day. We've had a beautiful winter so far, 'no kick coming' on this winter it's great. Cooked and sewed all morning. Went down town and did a few errands. Came home and finished a silk work bag. Father went to the brotherhood meeting. Bill and I went to choir rehearsal. Mary Morse has announced her engagement and wears a diamond. It is a beautiful night but cold. Clean and moon light. Had a nice letter from Mary Webb she's coming down Sun. January Sat 11 Another perfect day. Sewed cooked, dusted etc all morning. After dinner wrote a letter to Margaret and Helen came in just as I was finishing we went to walk a while down to the lib. etc. When the sun went down we came in & I sewed. We had a great old visit. Mety came came up in the even- ing and we played duets. Then I walked down with her. A lovely night but cold and not quite as clear as it has been. Richard Wilson is engaged, nothing like having your old beaux go back on you. January Sun 12 Grey and cloudy when we woke this morning. It snowed hard when we came out of Sunday school. Mr Beeden is here. We had fried oysters for dinner awfully good. Robert and Leslie were over here this afternoon - as full of business as ever. Robert said "I'm going down town, am are." meaning (I am). Gail and I went to the 5:19 to see Mary. The train was an hour late so we had a fine visit. It snowed hard all evening. We went to C.E. and evening meeting Read a little while and went to bed early. Head ached. January Mon 13 The world was like fairy-land this morning every little twig covered with snow. Mother and I had the washing out at 10:30. I rubbed and nearly took the skin off my fingers. Then I ripped up my brown waist, made a desert and got dinner. After dinner Mother took a nap and as soon as I had fin- ished my dishes I took one too. Robert & Leslie came over about three oclock. Mrs Metzger came in a few minutes Gail, father and I went to meeting. Lovely night. I thot I never should get to sleep. I'm reading Nicholas Nickleby its just great. January Tues 14 Beautiful morning. I never saw 'my hills' look lovelier, all powered [powdered] and the bright blue sky behind them. I made bread and bunns and mother made a squash and apple pie. We did our ironing too. Robert and Leslie were over and nearly made me crazy. Leslie came over after dinner and we gave him a nap out doors. I had a short nap then took L. down town withe me. At 6:30 Metz, Mary, Helen, Laura, Stella, Bill and I started for Mary Morse's on snowshoes. We went over resevoir hill it was perfectly beautiful moonlight & clear we had grand fun up there had fudge and pop-corn. Got home at 10:30. Letter from Hortense today. January Wed 15 Made a layer cake and cream pie this morning. Mother swept sitting-room. Robert and Leslie were here all the morning. Mrs. Metzger stopped a few minutes with Albert. Lina Battles died last night with Scarlet fever. Leslie came back after dinner for his nap. After he woke up (3:30) I took Robert and he down town. We went over to Helen's a few minutes. Before supper Mrs. Fletcher and Ma B. came in for awhile. Cold day - Bill, Miss Brenton and I went to meeting. 'Nick' grows more interesting at every reading. A little cloudy to- night Metz has a bad cold. January Thur 16 Cold day but nice. I "did down" the halls and stairs and bathroom then made pepermints and checkeberries for mothers 'Highland Club'. Mother went to the 'Bethany Guild'. Helen and I went down to the library a few minutes and then she came up with me and we sewed. At five oclock I walked down with her to get a book I wanted. I met Mother at the store and we came home together. Miss Brenton and I went to meeting. Bill spent the evening with Ma B. I had a long letter from Margaret today. She's been having grippe. January Fri 17 I made maple sugar candy this morning and dusted etc. We had a late dinner and I had to hustle to be dressed for the 'Highland Club'. We had a very plea- sant time. Grace brought Elizabeth and she slept all the time. I wrote a long letter to Bundy before dinner. Guy, Mr. Tracy, John L., Mr Blaisdel, Mary W., Gail and I went for a short run up around Chandler's. Then at 8:30 we met at the Hotel for the business meeting. Guy is secretary and I'm on the executive comm. Very warm nice night. Mother and father went to meeting. Father had church com. meeting afterwards. January Sat 18 Another beautiful day. I hustled this morning. Made a chocolate cake desert for tuesday, did the other kitchen work, swept and dusted our room and got the meals. Robert and Leslie were here awhile in the morning and Mother kept them in her room. Helen came up before I was dressed and we got out in the sunshine. Went down to see Nell and to the lib. It grew colder and windy after the sun went down. We met Metz and she walked up here with us. I gave them some cake. Choir re- hearsal in the evening. January Sun 19 Clear and lovely this morning but the wind blows like John. I stayed home from church with Mother as she was sick with indigestion all night. I've had my gold beads restrung and made longer they came back last night slick, bill 5:25. We had fried oyster for dinner. Catherine, Helen, Alice and I went to walk. It was lovely but cold. Mr. Hollis took us up around Burt's in a 2 seater and with a pair, we had had his wife and children out. Nick gets more and more interesting. The Venetian Band played at the service tonight fine. House full. Choir sang Keeler's Peace Hymn. Cold night. Mother feels better tonight. Letter from Grace today, Hester stands up. Robert and Leslie were here this after - noon. I wrote R. today. January Mon 20 Very cold early but grew warmer toward night. I hurried with my work to get to sewing on my brown jumper. Mother feels rather weak but much better I guess it was just indigestion. I went down town about ten oclock for some ribbon. I've sewed all afternoon and finish- ed it. Mother did most of it I read some. Wore it to the Concert. Metz and I went together. Small house but the concert was fine. Long letter from Marge today. January Tues 21 We washed this morning and I made bread, buns, and baked apples. The buns were fine. Perfect day, just like spring. We hurried with our work to get out into the sunshine. Mother dressed before dinner and father took her over to Mr. Haraden's. I was out at 2:30. I went over to Mrs. J. Laur- son's on an errand met Helen as I came down the hill and we went to walk. About five oclock it sprinkled a little. 17 of the Club went on a run up Reservoir Hill and had a marshmellow roast. It rained a little off and on but we had a good time. January Wed 22 Cloudy this morning and still thawing. Bill didn't feel well and staid home from the store. We ironed. My silk petticoat came. Its a peach, red and black changable. I've ordered the goods for my new dress. Its to be an Alice blue sun plaited Its grown colder all day. Robert and Leslie were here all the afternoon. They were just too cute for anything and kept us highly entertained. Bill and I drew them home on the sled it is so sloppy I sewed all afternoon and this evening have finished Nicholas and written to Margaret. That is a great book. Bill and Miss Brenton went to the Moving Picture affair. Father and Mother have been playing 'back-gammon.' Very windy and colder tonight. January Thur 23 Did the usual work. Went over to Guy's with the milk and to Aunt Julia's. I saw Anne a minute she is gaining slowly but doesn't sit up or see anyone yet. I made a dandy desert 'jellied apples'. Allie Mc was here a few minutes and Mrs. Belle Dubois made a short call. Mother sewed after dinner. I didn't get upstairs until nearly 3 then I slept an hour. Mrs. Morton came in a little while. It as snowed steadily all day. Our club met with Jennie we had a good time, all there but Mary I guess she thot [thought] it to stormy to come down. We talked so much we didn't quite finish our book. Its a fine story entitled 'Uncle William'. Its warm and nice tonight and only snows a little. January Fri 24 Felt fritzy this morn- ing and didn't get up until noon. Robert and Leslie were here awhile. Gail stayed home until 10 oclock to help mother do the work. I sewed on my everlasting pin cushion all the afternoon. Bill and I went to choir rehersal this evening. Father went to University Club. Mr. Wilson entertained at the Hotel. Mother spent the evening at Guy's and Aunt Julia's. Annie is gaining. Colder today but not bad at all. Metz and Helen went to a Basket Ball game and dance tonight. I wanted to but didn't think best. Miss Brooks of Montpelier is here. January Sat 25 I made bread and buns, a cake and a desert for two days. Also dusted halls and stairs, parlor living room and our room. Felt rather tired by the time I'd gotten din- ner. Mother went to Literary Club at Mrs. Morton's. I went down to Helen's. We played 500 Slews of fun. Miss Brooks from Montpelier was there. In the evening I went to the store and listened to Grant playing a piano an agent has in our window. Then went to the library and Alice Father and I came up together. The goods for my blue dress came today. January Sun 26 Warm day church and S.S. as usual. Blanch is away. Miss Brooks went to S.S. with Metz and I. In the afternoon (we had salmon wiggle for dinner) Alice, Helen, Metz, Miss Brooks and myself went walking. After Miss B. left us we came up here and Guy drove up with the team so I took the girls for a ride. We got back just in time to see Miss B. and Mary W. off. M. did look so pretty. I came home and read awhile then went to C.E. and Metz & I went to service at Baptist. Bill and I read until after eleven. January Mon 27 Gail stayed home from the store this morning as it was stormy. We had a small washing. I made a cranberry steamed pudding that was good. I went down town in the afternoon did a few errands and went to the library. I sent the goods for my dress to Burlington to be pleated today. After supper Helen telephoned and wanted me to go down to dancing school with her. Laura and Mr. Beaden went too. We went at 9:15 and got home at twelve. Theyre were only a few there but we had a good time. I felt just like dancing. Guy and father were at Brotherhood Club. Mr. Hollis and Leon Sault went as Guy's guests. January Tues 28 We spent some time after breakfast talking over our Masquerade costumes and I guess they are settled at last. Small ironing. I made orange jelly and put it in the skins of the oranges. I went down down after dinner and got the material for my costume. 'Metz' met me and I went up in the office with her we had a great old visit. Mr. M. was away and she had nothing to do. Club met at Cather- ine's in the evening. Everyone was there. We finished our book 'Uncle William'. It was clear this morning but is colder and cloudy again to night. Helen has been working the last two days at the printing office. January Wed 29 Usual work in the morning then Mother and I made peper- mints and maple sugar candy for the Guild meets here tomorrow. I've felt rather wretched all day my stomach is a little out of order. After dinner I took a short nap. Then I cut the waist of my costume and worked on that until supper time. The silk came to trim my pleated dress and is a perfect match. I played the piano, sewed a little and went to bed early. Its a very cold night. January Thur 30 Clear, sunshiny and beautiful this morning but cold. Mother and I spent the forenoon dusting etc getting the house in good order for the Bethany Guild meeting. There were ten ladies here we had a fire in the fire place. 2° below at noon today. 'The boys' were here this morn- ing afternoon. Mary Morse took sup- per with us. I made a fresh jelly roll cake and Mother made hot bisquits 'Under Southern Skys' was fine. The house was full. Cold as Greenland. J. Irving and his wife were down and several other cadets. Arene Rumrill is very sick with pneumonia. January Fri 31 Beautiful, clear morning, but oh! so cold. The goods for my blue dress came back all pleated it's going to be a lovely dress. There was a fire the other side the river this morn- ing but I guess nothing serious. I sewed on my costume, made a steamed pudding got dinner. Then sewed all the afternoon. Helen came up and we had quite a visit. Dressed early for the University Club Banquet. We girls that sewed were all in white ano each had a bunch of sweet peas in her belt. The dining room looked awfully pretty. It was in the Parish House. Bill, Grace, Guy and all went. Fine turkey dinner. Mr. Morril of the Center spoke on 'Events leading up to Columbus' discovery of America'. Ochestra played just finely. February Sat 1 January has just flown by. Little Arene is better. It has moderated a little and was snow- ing hard when we woke up. We had breakfast at nine oclock father & I. Bill came down at 9:15 and mother at 9:30. We certainly are getting mighty stylish It has snowed hard all day just piled up a genuine old fashioned storm. Father isn't feeling well and Bill and he stayed home. I bundled up and took the magazines over to Johnson's after dinner then went down town to get the mail. The 3 & 1:25 came in at 4 together. I waited over at Helen's. Then we walked down to the library. Read played and all went to bed early. February Sun 2 4 It must have snowed eighteen inches. Bill and I 'braved the blasts' and went to church. It was awfully rought when we went down there were seventy at church. Grace and Guy and Elizabeth took dinner with us. Chicken, cranberry sauce, onions, mince & squash pie, steamed pudding, nuts & candy all decidedly full. Helen & 'Metz' came up about three M & I played a few duets then we went around to Alice's and all went down to Helen's. Mother and Father have been over to Aunt Julia's Annie isn't as well today. I've written to R, & Bill to J tonight. Hearing recent town scandal J wants to know whether its the frisky theatricals or the mild winter that makes the people act as devilish. February Mon 3 I haven't been out of the house today. Father stayed home until nearly twelve and we tried the new washing motor. It worked finely the washing was out at 10:30. M & I cut the skirt for my costume before dinner and sewed more or less all the afternoon. The little boys were here also Grace & Miss Brenton Mother is reading 'A Spinner in the Sun' aloud to father Its a pretty story I've read it. Very cold tonight we are over working the fireplace these days. King & crown prince of Portugal assinated [assassinated] Sun. February Tues 4 Clear and beautiful this morning but 30° below in some places. We had breakfast at 9:15. I made bread buns and cake then worked on my costume. Had a note from Marge. She's had another operation on her arm and is at Mary Hitchcock Hospital Hanover. She's doing well and her courage is good. Annie has been worse again and is quite discouraged. Mrs Morton came in with her sewing this afternoon. Club met at Stella's we had a good time just talked. Awfully cold night, just squeeky cold. February Wed 5 44º below in some places last night. Clear this morning but 12° below at noon. Father stayed home. Mother and I ironed. The pipes in the laundry were all frozen but we thawed them out O.K. All the milk in the pantry frozen etc. Mother went to the Sanitorium Aid Meeting in the afternoon and Helen and I 'did the fairground' selling tickets, fair luck. In the evening Bill and I went to a Rehearsal for the Court Party. I guess things are going O.K. It has grown a little warm- er and looks like snow. Letter from Grace today. Hester is coming on great. February Thur 6 Mother finished my costume. I went down town after my tulle and flowers and over to the Sanitorium to sell tickets to the nurses. Father stayed home in the afternoon. Helen came up and after I had tried on my dress I went down town with her and did some errands. Mrs. Hollis' sister came today. We sewed in the evening and Bill fixed my head arrange- ment. Its moderated for which we are all glad, but it has snowed a little all day. February Fri 7 We had breakfast at quarter of ten this morning. I went down town to do a few last errands. When I got home I sewed lace on my mask, fixed my belt and did other odd jobs. Took bath and dressed all but dress before dinner (5 P:M). Mother made ice cream. Guy had a team come for Gail, Grace and I. Everything went off well there were a lot of masqueraders. The dance was good too. I danced all but one figure. Gail took third prize. Its grown a little colder since morning. R.C is here came on the 5:19 tonight. February Sat 8 Clear and sunshiny but cold and the wind blows. The snow is so soft it drifts terribly. Did the usual Saturday work. Made jellied apples, dusted etc. Mother went to the club at Mrs. Viall's. Little Leslie had the croop last night. They had the Dr. for him and he's better today. Grace & Guy went as 'Teddy' and Mrs. R__ last night, fine. I read awhile then went down town to the lib. Cold night. Father stayed home and Guy did too, so Gail had to go to the store. I went to choir rehersal. Little Leslie still has the croop and Grace wanted Guy at home. February Sun 9 Perfectly beautiful morning but cold. Father and mother stayed home. Good congregation. Alice Mc came over a little while after dinner. Rob called from 4 to 7:15. There was no evening preaching service so C.E. was at 7:30. Special service in the church. I had to sing in a quartete Blanch isnt home yet. Rob's train went down at 10:15 due at 9. We made corn- balls after dinner. Gail took little Robert to walk. I've just finished rather a good little story entitled 'Clem'. February Mon 10 Cold this morning and a little cloudy. I mean to get at my blue dress this week. Father is feeling better and went to the store this morning. Mother and I did a large wash- ing and the usual work. I sewed and read until nearly five oclock then went down town Mother took a nap. Father & Guy went to Brotherhood Meeting. Metz & I went to the show. Too blood & thundery to suit me but the funny man was fine. Long letter from Loula & one from Mrs. A. A. Smith February Tues 11 Perfectly beautiful day and warmer. We ironed & I made a cake & desert. Gail stayed home & finish ed a dressing sack. Helen came just as I was getting on my things. We took Robert & Leslie on their sled. We walked with them until the sun went down then went down to the library & Metz joined us. I went down to the library & Metz's in the evening. Perfectly fine night clear and moonlight. February Wed 12 Another lovely day. I made maple sugar candy to sent Theron by Gail. Usual work. I haven't touched my blue dress yet. Gail & I had valentines from Julian yesterday. I bought some new rubbers & gaiters, over- shoes are too bum. I had Robert & Leslie out all the afternoon. After I took them home I went down to Nell's awhile. I met Mary M. & she took me for a short ride. Club met with us tonight we had a good time. Jellied apples & cake. I ran a tuck in my red silk petticoat. Mary & Jim expect to have the Evans house. February Thurs 13 Usual work. Cooking etc. I sewed a little before dinner. It rained quite hard in the night and a little 'off and on' all day. Gail stayed with Mary M. last night. She's getting ready to start for W tomorrow. Mother went to the Guild in the afternoon. I sewed. Stitched pinch tucks in the soft blue silk for the yolk of my dress until my head aches & I'm cross, it (the silk) slews and slides & is awful to work on. I've had to pull out over & over. Choir rehersal and bed in good season but neither Bill or I slept well it was too warm and we were restless. Long letter from R.D.W. today quitea [quite a] surprize. February Fri 14 Still thawy but no rain this morning. I went down to the train with Gail. Catherine, Helen, Guy and I were there to see her off Jim and Solan came to say goodby. The train was only twenty minutes late. We girls stood watching the train pull out & saw some of our N.U. friends in the pullman all hands waved. I came home and sewed. Got my blue skirt into the binding. Mother took the silk to Highland Club at Mrs. Harris, and basted tucks. Father went to Board of Trade ban- quet. Metz & I went to the show. It rained hard when I came home. 4 valentines today from Jack, Pa W, Anne & Maurine. February Sat 15 It rained all night last night and the snow has srunk [shrunk]. Perfectly awfull walking. This has been our busy day. I swept and dusted my room. Swept & dusted halls, stairs & bath- room, shook all the rugs, cleaned the bowls etc. Made a lemon jelly cake, two kinds of cookies & brown bread. Mother made doughnuts, three pies and swept & dusted her room and the sewing room. I got dressed at 3:30. We sent a lunch to father by Guy so he didn't come home to dinner. Beans & brown bread for supper. All hands read I played the piano about an hour then went to bed. February Sun 16 Colder this morning but sunshiny and beautiful. Icy walking. Not many at church. Father went with me but mother stayed home, the boys came over and 'raised hang' until we came home from S.S. We had a card from Gail say- ing she left N.Y. for Washington yes- terday morning. Helen is better. C, M, & I went to walk. Lovely but awful walk- ing. Melting in the evening I sang in a quartette. I made butter scotch after dinner. It's a beautiful night, moon- light and lovely I hated to come in. February Mon 17 Queer day. The sun shone one minute and there was a snow squall the next. We did the usual work. Had a card from Gail saying she reached W. O.K. and its hot down there I sewed a little before dinner on my skirt and all the afternoon. Its slow work. Mother ran tucks for me. Elmer Bean died today. Forty-eight started at 6:30 for the Center. I've had a chicken- pie supper at Hibbard's then snow- shoed came back and danced and had great fun. It cleared off lovely about 8 and we had the moon after that. Lots of fun coming home. Mr. H. took me to supper. Metz had a hard headache. I've felt a cold com- ing on all day am trying to break it up. Letter from R. February Tues 18 5 Lovely day. I felt bum and my dosing for my cold. We ironed and sewed all day. Leslie spent the afternoon with us he was good as gold. I got on rather well on my skirt. Card from Margaret today she's been having grippe again. I planned to go to bed early but Mr. Beedle telephoned me to go down at 7:30 to practice for a funeral tomorrow. Its colder tonight. Boiled dinner today good too. The Eastman boy at the Sanitorium is very low. I've felt miserable all day coming down with this wretched cold. February Wed 19 Snowed hard all day. We started for Allen Flint's at nine oclock. Mr. B, Dr. Kelty, Kate Howard and I. Slew of relatives I met three of my Conn. Corner friends there Mr. Thresher & Delia were there. We got home at 12:30. It snowed hard all day. I sewed all the afternoon. Read and played the piano in the evening and went to bed early. Cut my finger. February Thur 20 It snowed all night and we have a good lot now almost as much as before the thaw. We had a long letter from Gail yesterday. She's having a fine time says Hester's hair is red but a lovely color. Mother and I worked on the yolk & cuffs of my white dress I cut the old ones out for Bill to wear the dress low neck to the Ball. We made lace ones this time and its much prettier. I took Robert and Leslie down town its such a lovely day awfully hard walking tho the snow is so dry. Mr. Sprague drew them up the hill for me. We finished my dress ready for tomorrow night February Fri 21 Mother made ice-cream this morning. I pressed my dress etc. Nice but colder to- day we're to have a team take us to night. Mother and I spent the afternoon at the Parish House arranging the table etc. Helen & I ran errands. It was a very successful affair A reader from the Center. Sandwiches, coffee, olives, cake & ice-cream. My dress is prettier than ever. Mr Edson and Mr. Eastman died in the night last night. Father and John went from one case to the other and were out from 2 a:m till 8. February Sat 22 Mother brought home all the spoons to wash. Mrs. Morton came over to help her sort them. At 9 oclock Mother, Mrs. Tracy & I went down to the Parish House and worked all morn- ing delivering things & taking around boxes of flowers, cake etc. They sent for me to go to the store at 11 because father & J had to go on another case a Mr. George. We didn't get to dinner till 3 oclock. A beautiful day. I changed my clothes and Helen & I went to walk Then to her house & Mary, Mr. B., H & I played five Hundred. I didn't go home for supper but stayed at store. Went down to Metz' in the evening. Helen entertained John Chase. February Sun 23 A nice day but cold. We were late with dinner, mashed potatoe, onions, pork chops, coffee pudding & nuts. Grace, Guy & all, Alice & Metz came before our dishes were finished. We girls played and sang awhile then went on a walk. I came home & wrote a letter. Mother wrote 14 pages to the girls. I had to sing at C.E. Metz & I went to meeting met M. B he went with us. Afterwards we had welch- rabbit at the Metzger's. Grace F. L. was there. Mr. B. walked up with us. It snowed a little. My cold is better all in my head. February Mon 24 Guy has a dreadful cold but is taking care of himself, says 'He doesn't care to join the rapidly departing.' We got up at 5 this morning father has two funerals today. Nice but cold. Mr. Beedle paid me $2 yesterday for singing at the Flint funeral. Also got $3 for substituting in school. I'm up to see Maurine in a couple of weeks itll come in handy. John & Miss Warner, Cope & Helen went snowshoeing yesterday up to Cope's cabin. Washing done and 7 pies made at 10 oclock. Lovely day but cold. I took the boys out as Grace went to the dressmaker's. Helen walked with me. Father went to Brotherhood meeting. Mother & I read and went to bed early. February Tues 25 Lovely but cold. Guy is staying home today. Mother and I had our ironing and other work done at quarter of ten. We sewed until dinner time. Leslie came over at about 1 and stayed all the afternoon with me. Mother went to conference meeting and made calls. I sewed on my blue dress, darned stocking, sewed buttons over on my gaiters etc. We had a long letter from Bill today, their [they're] having a fine time. Maurine wants me to go up 'the sooner the quicker'. Club met at Stella's we had a good time read the life of 'Starr King' very interesting. February Wed 26 Jim & Mary are to have the Evans house. Mr. Mason told Mother the other day that he had the deed in his pocket. It snows hard this morning. Guess we're in for another storm. Did some dusting etc in the morning Then mother and I sewed all day. My dress is beginning to 'come on'. About five oclock I made perpermints and checkerberries. Helen, Mary, and Mr. Beeden came up in the evening and we played five hundred until 10:30. Lots of fun. It has snowed all day. I wrote Bill, Mrs. Smith, Maurine and Mary Webb this morning. February Thurs 27 Usual morning's work. Mother and I sewed until 2 oclock. Then Mother went to the Guild and I did some errands down town and gossiped with Catherine at the office. Mr W. was away and she didn't have to work. We walked until supper time. Helen came up on the 5:19 and I met her she's working at Bethel for a few days. In the even- ing we played five hundred. Mr. B. and I won 2 games & Helen & Mary three. Dress is 'coming on' slowly. Nice day, mild. February Fri 28 Some snow in the air this morning but pleasant. Guy's cold is fierce. He had a wretch- ed night. I've made bread and rolls this morning. Mrs. Tracy was in a few minutes. Mother and I sewed until dinner time. Mother took the team and went up to Uncle Lewis Fish's it was his 90th birthday. I sewed awhile then went down town. Metz walked awhile with me. Choir rehearsal in the evening. A dandy night. I had a card from Marjorie today she's better has been down town once. February Sat 29 Lovely day but cold. Uusual Sat's cleaning up. Then mother and I sewed until noon and after dinner until after five oclock. The dress is coming on but 't'will take two days to finish it. In the evening Helen, Metz, Mary, Mr. Beeden and Mr. Kingsbury were here. We had a fire in the fire- place and played hearts. At 9:15 we had sugar on snow dough- nuts, pickles & butternuts. Mr. B.'s first 'sugaring off'. We sang until 10:30. Had an awfully good time. March Sun 1 Lovely morning but has grown cloudy and warmer. Mr. Tewkes- bury took us down to church. Communun [Communion] Sunday. Mr. B. & Mr. K. said they were going but didn't show up guess their breakfast was too late at the Wedgwoods. I had dinner with the Metzgers. Metz and I went to see Alice off on the 1:25. for N.Y. I begin in the library to- morrow. Metz, Helen & I went to walk after dinner We met Mr. & Mrs. Hollis with little Marion & Mary Moulton out riding after Mr. H. had taken them home he took up uparound Peth. Handy pair and we had a fine ride. C.E. and evening service. It snowed some while we were out and all the evening. March Mon 2 It snowed when we got up this morning and has kept it up all day. Mother and I sewed etc. We had roast chicken for dinner. I went to the library early. Took a lunch so didn't come home for supper. Mother Father and Aunt Julia went to the Ladie's Night of the Brotherhood banquet. I went over after I had finished work (10:15) The girls were just eating supper. I rode home with the folks. We have a whole lot more snow. Their speaker was Dwight Moody's son they said he was fine. March Tues 3 Beautiful day. We had a little time to sew before I went down town at 10 oclock. Town meeting day and the books came from E. Randolph. Desier helped me and we went over to the Baptist church to dinner. I was busy all afternoon and evening. Came home to supper. Mr. H. came in & stayed while I closed up & saw me safely up to Helen's it was club night. I only stayed a minute as I was very tired. Letters from Robert and Maurine toyesterday. March Wed 4 Cloudy and shiny by spells. Mother and I washed and sewed. Metz came in a minute in the morning.. Busy day at the library as the Center Books came & I had those to change. Desier helped me. I came home to supper but stayed down to finish up my work until nearly ten. Postal from Bill today. March Thur 5 6 Beautiful day just like spring. Mother and I ironed then sewed. Guy is better again and walked down town today. Very lazy day at the library. The So. Randolph books came. Desier came in while I was fixing them and helped me. I left things in good shape. Mr. Hollis enter the days books in the leger for me. Then we went up to the Hotel to the Snow- shoe supper and dance. Applied for the E.G. school. March Fri 6 These are busy days. We sewed until dinner time. Busy day at the library. I did several errands in the supper hour. I worked until nearly ten oclock then finish- ed 'The Doctor' when I got home. Mary Morse stayed all night with me. Jim and she spent the evening with Mr. & Mrs. Ray- mond. An awful night rough & stormy. Wrote to Marge. March Sat 7 We have almost finished my dress. I had to go down town early as Dr. B. cleaned my teeth before lib. time. Very busy day I worked late. Metz. helped me some. I finished my girdle belt before I went to bed. Its clearing tonight I guess it'll be nice tomorrow. We've washed my suit skirt and it looks like new. Also cleaned my grey silk waist. March Sun 8 Lovely day. I got up early sewed the bows on my slippers, blacked my shoes, packed my suit case and made an angele cake before breakfast. Fine sermon, good music and congregation. Mr. B was there. Mr. Hollis called early. Mr. B. took Helen, Mary, Metz and I to ride with a dandy pair we got back just in time for me to make the train Maurine had a nice spread. Mr. Hersom and Mr. O'Sullivan were here we had a fine time. M & I talked 'til the wee small hours. March Mon 9 Letter from Marge this morn- ing she's coming up for Strongheart hooray! I wrote a letter before dinner and visited with Mrs. T. and Mrs. Smith. After dinner M & I went calling on Mrs. Hobart and friends of M's. I read and played the piano in the evening and we went to bed at 10. Cold and rather windy today. Maurine went to the office in the morning. March Tues 10 Sunny and nice but rather cold. Maurine worked all day. I sewed the lace into my blue dress and made the 'tail' for the belt. We had a nice time at the dance got home at twelve oclock. I wore my plaited skirt and white lace waist. Mrs. T. had a long letter from 'Aunt Irene' today she is well and having a fine time with her old friends. March Wed 11 Maurine and I took the eight oclock train to Richmond. She goes down every week for adds. I called on Mr. Fish and we called at her friends Mrs. Goodwin. Got home at dinner time. Maurine work all afternoon. I went to bed had a fine nap and bath. Mr. & Mrs. Cross came in the evening and we played '500'. I had letters from Alice, Margaret, Mr. Hemenway & postal from Metz. March Thur 12 Nice sunny day and I stayed in and read and played all the forenoon. M & I went into Burlington after dinner. We stopped at Mrs. Esty's and she went in with us. M. had business & Mrs. E. calls so I banged around in the music stores then went back to Mrs. E's & read 'till she came. We went to a church supper with her, Mr. Hersom & Mr. Estey. After " Mrs. E had two lads out and we played cards and (danced the barn dance) had a (welch rabbit). The boys came home with us and we fooled around until their car came. Lovely moonlight nig[ht] March Fri 13 I made jellied apples, read the 'Bug/Buz' and played in the forenoon. M & I put on our glad rags & went into Burlington to make calls in the P.M. We called on Loula Jarvis, Mildred Peek, Beth Bert Partridge & Helen Ferguson Moat. Had a little time to shop. I bought M a brown veil and she bought me a pin. We had a lark. It was cloudy and windy all day and in the even- ing it rained. Mrs. Estey & Mrs. McGreery were here. We had a nice visit. There's almost no snow left. Gail's been gone four week today. March Sat 14 A beautiful spring day. I read played the piano etc. Maurine and I dressed before dinner for the theatre. I wore Mrs. T's long black coat with my blue dress. M. wore her $12 black waist and voil skirt. Mr. H & Mr O'S. met us at the P.O. M. took some pictures of us before we went in. The play was only fair but of course we had lots of fun. Had ice cream while we were waiting for our car. Met Harry Morton in the store. M & I spent the even- ing with Mr. and Mrs. Cross a lovely night. March Sun 15 Cloudy when we woke up and looked like rain. M & I went around to Fred Wedgwoods and called for Mary. We went to church and S.S. together. It rained a little when we came out of. After dinner it stopped we went into B. on the 3 oclock car. Spent the afternoon at Lula Jarvis. Sang duets with her brother and had a fine time. I wore my blue dress M. her green silk. They served salmon wiggle sandwitches cocoa etc. Two other friends of Lula's were there. Mr Her- som & Mr. O'Sulivan called for us at 7:30 and we went up to Dom's for supper. Had lots of fun. The boys didn't leave Essex until the last car. It poured in the afternoon but stopped while we were at Dom's. March Mon 16 We got up late I went into B. on the 10:30 car. Loula met me and we went to Wilder's studio to have my voice tried but it was too late he couldn't spare the time. We went shopping. I bought material for two waists a new grey belt and some music. Got back to Essex just in time to go to dinner at the Wedgwoods. We had a fine din- ner and played 500 until 4 oclock. I had to pack my suit case and get to the train at 5. Read most of the way down. It snowed and grew colder. Metz. Helen & Father met me we had a great old visit. March Tues 17 Snowed nearly all day. Mother and I washed. Mother spent the afternoon at Guy's. The children have the whooping cough and it makes it hard for Grace. I went down town Helen walked down to the lib. with me then up here. I wrote four letters before supper. Club met at Stella's. We played bezekck (I can't spell it) had lots of fun. Welch- rabbit, olives, fudge etc. It was warm- er again. I found letters from Rob & Mr. Wheeler when I got home. Marge isn't able to come up for 'Strongheart' tomorrow night. 'Its O' the green Shamrock'. March Wed 18 Cloudy but warmer. Mother and I ironed. I cooked a little. After dinner I sewed. I'm letting down my grey suit skirt. Mary Morse came up about five and had supper with us. Father took us to the play with the team I wore my blue dress. Grace and Ma. Brooks went with us. Metz and I sat together. Fine show strong play and well acted. Metz stayed all night with me we went down to the dance a little while. March Thur 19 Still cloudy and warm no sugar weather so far. Except last Sat. I finished and pressed my skirt and it looks like new. Mother cleaned the dinning room closet. It snowed nearly all day. I went down town after dinner wrote a card to Maurine did a few errands etc. Helen walked up with me. She had a bunch of carnations from Boston this morning. Sewed until supper time. Mrs. Morton & Ma. B. were here. Letter from Grace. we had a fire in the fireplace and read all the evening. March Fri 20 Mother and I swept the parlor and sitting room and I did the halls and stairs thoroly and shook the rugs. Lovely day. I went over with the magazines after dinner and met Helen down town. We walked until I had to come home to bake 4 doz. rolls for the Roll call. Mother went down to help set the tables. We had sugar on snow for dinner. There were 200 at the Roll call we had a good supper and a nice time. Dandy moon- light night. Wrote 12 page letter to G & G. March Sat 21 7 Mother went down to the Parish House to help. I made a cake and jellied apples for two days. Cracked but- ternuts for the frosting. It was a lovely day warm & springy. I took care of the babies while Grace went to the Literary Club. After- words I walked down town with Stella. Choir rehersal in the evening. Lovely night. March Sun 22 Not quite as nice as yesterday but warm. I wore my blue dress to church. Large congregation Mr. B was there. I went around to see Nell a minute after S.S. Leslie was here for dinner. Metz and Helen came up but we didn't walk much it was so bad. Went down to Helen's and played & sang. Mr. B. played mandolin. Father and I went to evening meeting. I wrote a twelve page letter to Maurine. March Mon 23 Lovely spring day I washed my hair before breakfast. We washed & I made a pudding. Robert & Leslie have played out all the morning. Anne is getting on splendidly. I went down town a little while in the afternoon. Helen and I walked. I stayed with the children in the evening while Grace & Guy went to their clubs. March Tues 24 We had a large ironing but finished it by eleven. I went down to the library a little while in the afternoon. Bernice came on the 5:19 but I didn't stay down to meet it Club met at Catherine's in the evening. I worked on a sofa pillow that I bought in Springfield over a year ago and have just gotten around to start. Metz had a long let- ter from Maurine. She's been sick in bed with a cold. March Wed 25 Maurine's 22d birthday. A perfect day. Too bad she isn't well. Mother has her carpet up and is clean- ing her room. I made a pud- ding and cut the new solk lin- ning for my grey coat. I had to get out a few minutes it was so lovely. Helen walked with me Jennie M. walked up with me and stayed awhile. I sponged myand pressed my coat and sewed all evening. Colder tonight. March Thur 26 Mother is painting the wood work in her room. I did the usual worked and sewed the rest of the time. I to [took] the limit pullng [pulling] in that lining. Went down town on an errand wanted to come right back and sew found them so busy at this store I had to stay until 4:30. Guy had a girl come on the 3. Choir rehersal in the evening. Card from Gail, she's having a great time. Chinatown, Coney Island, Hippodrome, etc. March Fri 27 Rained by spells all day. I swept our room dusted downstairs etc. Mother worked in her room. I sewed on my coat linning until nearly 5. Then went with the magazines & to meet Bill. Helen went with me. Bill had on a summer hat and suit. Grass green in W. She had a fine time in N.Y. too. Metz came up awhile in the evening and Guy & Grace were over. Arthur Walsh died yrs. ago today. Saw my first robin today. March Sat 28 It rained until about 3:30 then cleared off lovely. I cooked all morning never stopped a jiffy. Desert for two days, angel cake, spice cake, roasted beef got dinner and did all the dishes. Helped mother with the halls after dinner and then went down to the lib. a few minutes. Came home and sewed all the evening and finished my coat. Hester has cut a tooth. March Sun 29 Rainy. Mother didn't go to church. Fine sermon, fair congregation. Albert Metz has been well for a day or two. Metz & Helen came up late when it stopped raining & we walked around the square. Guy's folks all here and we sugared off. I didn't go to the C.E. my head has ached so all day my scalp is sore. Father and I went down to second meeting a lot there. Bill & I went down to Bernice's afterwards had a fine visit with her. Welby & Arthur Galearnu [Galarneau] came home with us. March Mon 30 Lovely sunshiney day & colder. We'll have more sugar weather now. We had a large washing and kept hustling all forenoon. In the afternoon Helen, Mary Moulton & I walked over the other side of the river. Lovely but a little cool. Bill and I went to a C.E. social in the evening the were a lot there. Long letter from R. today. Bill wrote a letter to Loula for me on the typewriter. Card from 'Pa W.' today. March Tues 31 Lovely in the morning but clouded up in the afternoon and rained a little. We had an enormous ironing but finished it before dinner. Robert & Leslie were here. I made pepermints & checkerberries also, affter dinner, maple sugar candy. Bill made some chocolate caramels but the molasses was so strong we didn't like them. Good time at the club. Bill had awful earache all evening. Letter from Grace today. April Wed 1 Lovely morning clear and fine. Usual work. I sewed on my brown jumper until three oclock when Helen came and we walked awhile I had several errands to do. My jumper was wearing out, and I'm repairing it. Helen, Laura and I went down to a dance a little while. Ber- nice and Welby were there also Jim and Mary. Bill did feel quite like going but her head is better. Little Albert Metzger is ill again. April Thur 2 I went down town in the morning to do some telephoning on the New England. I have decided to try the exams for the West Brookfield school. Came home and sewed nearly all day. Rough day some snow. I finished my jumper. R. came on the three. Choir rehersal in the evening April Fri 3 Nice morning still rather cold but this snow flurry means more sugar so its welcome. Sewed all the time I had from the usual work. Cut a muslin waist. White with a grey check. Stayed home all after noon. G & I were invited down to Bernice's in the evening. Also Ruth R., John, L. of course Robert & Welby were there. We played 'Bizeckle' & sang. Albert grows worse. It is spinal meningitis. April Sat 4 Stuck to my waist all day and nearly finished it. Mother went to Club at Mrs. B Blanchards. Helen came up to get me to play 500. Mr. B. came last night but I didn't feel that I could spend the time. They Mr. B, H. & Robert came up in the evening & we with Bill played 500 & 'Bizeckle'/'Bizeekk'. Its been midmight [midnight] nearly all this week for us. Made jellied apples for 2 days. April Sun 5 Perfect day. I wore my blue dress to church. Mr. B. went guess he likes Mr. Metzger. Albert is no better. No evening service In the afternoon we all walked up to the wash out on the Morse road, 4 boys seven girls. Alice hase some beautiful new sable furs. Mr. H took Guy to ride this afternoon. We went over there for ice-cream. Choir rehersal on Easter music in the evening. April Mon 6 8 Beautiful day. Robert & Leslie were here all the morning We had a small washing. I made a layer cake and a desert. Then finished my book "Sophy of Kravonia' before dinner. Went down town early to get book at school. Jennie Morton walked around with me. Came back up after lib. books etc. Had to wait nearly an hour for a teacher's meeting Robert saw me & came in and visited. Miss Stuart gave me books and advised me to take exams for a yrs' certificate. I studied all even- ing went thro. Vermont History. Albert continues about the same. Saw Metz. a little while & walked with her. Helen & Copy went to walk yesterday & today April Tues 7 Another lovely day. After we had finished the ironing I studied, went thro Civics & Physiology. Made desert for 2 days. Metz had letter from Maurine enclosing pictures for me of us (Mr. H & Mr. S.) taken when I was at Essex. Mother and I went down town after dinner. Helen & I walked down to lib. etc. H had epistle from J.C. yesterday. Sarah C. came yester- day. Letter from Grace says Harrison F. is with them for a few days. He is ass. door keeper at the House. April Wed 8 Colder and cloudy with snow flurries in the morning. Stormed all day and I studied. Gail brought up some more books for me at noon. We went to meeting as there was a C.E. business meeting following. Albert stays about the same. April Thur 9 April day but nice in the afternoon. I studied in the morning then went down town. Helen and I went to the lib. Came home early and studied. Robert came up in the evening. We went to walk it was an elegant night. Made a maccaroon pudding dandy. April Fri 10 Expected to begin on the exams at 10 A:M but Mr. Sweet didn't show up until one oclock. I helped mother get dinner also sewed on my grey waist a little. Exams hard and long worked from 2 till 9:15 P:M. Walked over with the magazines then to get the air and down to Helen's. Pretty tired. April Sat 11 Lovely day. I sewed on my grey waist and fin- ished it. Went down town late in the afternoon. Helen went to the lib with me. Then we met Metz and Alice and walked with them. Robert was up in the evening, we played cards. After 10:45 I wrote a 12 page letter to Margaret and started one to Maurine. April Sun 12 Woke up at 5:30 and got up at 6:30. Finished letter to Margaret. Gail took the paper train to E. Granville to spend the day with Mary Webb. We had dinner at Uncle Jasper's. John & I went up to meet Gail and Mary at the train. Then went down and "sugared off" Primus & family there too. Evening meeting. Colder but nice. April Mon 13 Winter weather again snow flurries. We had our washing out in good season and I dusted around. It was cold all day. I went down town late and returned some books. We went to choir rehersal in the evening and Rob and John also Grace & Guy were here afterwards. We had to tables of whist. Coffee ice cream angel & spice cake. Dandy moon but cold. April Tues 14 Nice day. We had a large ironing. I went down town after dinner and Helen and I walked. It was warm and lovely. After a while Mary M. and Catherine walked with us. Gail spent the night with Mary Morse. My permit came today so I'm O.K. Perfect night. I sold post cards awhile at the store in the even- ing. Robert came up with me and stayed awhile. April Wed 15 Mother and I began to clean in the blue-room and worked like nailors all day. We got dressed just in time for supper. It rained by spells. We went to Prayer meeting & a business meeting of the Church. They voted to in- stal Mr. Metzger and raise his salary. We bowled after the meeting. The Dartmouth boys went back tonight. Fred C. spend the afternoon with Helen. April Thur 16 Lovely day but cold. Mother and I finished the third floor. We just hustled. I got dressed a five oclock and went down town. Metz., Helen, Alice & I walked awhile. Alice has had a letter from her cadet. Great night, full moon. Choir rehersal we walked awhile after it (the rehersal not the moon) I have invited Marge up for 'The Vanderbilt Cup' the 24th. April Fri 17 Another lovely day. Its still sugar weather. They've had a long season this year. Albert seems better. I cooked and did house work all morn- ing. Had a card from Mr. Wettje yes- terday. It was a fine night Metz & I went down to a dance a little while after choir rehersal at the Parish House. Father & Bill stayed and bowled awhile. April Sat 18 Usual work. Cooked and dusted and sewed a little. We've all had slews of Easter Post Cards. Albert is gaining every day. I had the team and we took plants to the church. I had to go down again in the evening. It rained some in the afternoon and all the even- ing. April Sun 19 Showers 'off and on' all day but in spite of the rain the church was filled. Mr. B. was there. There were- not many summer hats. I wore my blue dress but win- ter hat. We girls walked in the afternoon. Helen entertain- ed John C. in the evening. It cleared off toward night but cold. April Mon 20 Marge is in Boston so won't be here for the 'Vanderbilt Cup'. I took back the plants first thing in the morning. Then helped with the washing. Helen and I visited school in the afternoon. Our GIrl's Club met with Jennie. Helen & Mary were absent entertaining J. C again. Mr. & Mrs. E.E. Brooks came home from california Sat. night. April Tues 21 Cold and snowy again. We ironed and I mended a little. Was at Dr. B's from 1:30 till 4 had seven fillings put in. Then Helen, Mr. Beeden and I walked until I had to go down to the Parish House Metz & I had charge of the tables. S.S. sugar party. 150 there we had a good time. Hester's picture was in a w- paper taken at the 'Egg-rolling'. April Wed 22 Ironed and cooked all morning got awfully tired. It was my 'Jonah Day' Nothing went well. Note from Mrs. Thayer. Mrs. S & brother are at Saranac. I went down town in the afternoon and did errands then read at the library: I stayed home and mended in the evening. Gail went down to Stella's to a function. I've decided on my summer hat. April Thur 23 Mother and I worked like Trojans all day sweep- ing & cleaning the parlors. Mother had Mrs. Moses come and help her change a breadth of carpet that bulged. Lovely warm day. Choir rehersal in the evening. Helen was up a few minutes in the afternoon. April Fri 24 Warm and lovely. Ironed some, mended, cleaned two waists with gasolene etc. Mother cleaned the halls & stairs. I cooked some. Dressed and did errands in the afternoon Helen went with me. We saw 'the Vanderbilt Cup' in the even- ing, and we girls went down to a dance for awhile after it. The show was good. April Sat 25 Cloudy and a little cooler. Cooked a little. Copey is home over Sunday. I sewed and cooked all morning. Did errands in the afternoon. I went down to the library and read in the evening. The new magazines are nearly all in. Thot I'd have a last read. April Sun 26 Beautiful morning. Almost to warm for a coat. I wore my new hat to church. Its a black satin 'Merry Widow' with yellow and white daisies. Its going some' on size but it's pretty. Gail, Alice, Helen, Robert, Leslie and I went to walked down to Sarah's. Then saw Mary Webb off on the 5:19. The boys had the time of their lives. Chased doves all over the square and climbed up on the watering trough. C.E. and evening meetings and bed in good season. Nettie Metzger goes tonight. April Mon 27 Great morning just like summer. We got up at 5 and Bill and I started for my school at 7 Found a good lot of mud but arrived O.K. at a little before nine. Have a fine boarding place. First day went O.K. Had 13 pupils. There may be two or 3 more. It clouded up in the evening. Retired at 8:30. Tried to telephone Mother but our phone didn't work well. Have been thinking of Helen and hope she got on well. April Tues 28 Rained all night and the grass is begining to look green all ready. I had a letter from Aunt Harriet and one from Bill this morning. Also a fine picture of Loula S. It showered off and on all day. I walked down to Fred Flints after supper to talk over some school matters. Talked with Mother and Gail. The Club meets with Stella to- night wish I might be with them. Have written to Helen and R.C. April Wed 29 Lovely day my twenty first birthday! From now on I'm nineteen. I had three cards, a big cake of Peter's from father and a lovely little sapphire ring from Aunt Harriet. I talked with Catherine and Gail today. School goes O.K. no more pupils yet. Walked down to Untiedt's 'store' tonight with Mrs. P. Rand Herbert and a girl who lives across the road. Sewed some and went to bed early. April Thur 30 A nice day. I wrote to Loula and Aunt Harriet before school time. I get up at 5:30 these days and go to bed at about 8:30. Kept a half hour over time today inorder to let out at 2:30 tomorrow. In the evening I went May - flowering with three of my pupils. Lovely hills around here. Found a few adder tongues and spring beauties. Talked with Metz, Alice, & Mary M. today. May Fri 1 I made postals out of my birch bark and sent them before school. We made up time at noon and closed at 2:15. Mr. Metzger took me home he had a funeral up here. Mrs. Metzger, Mrs. Peck and 'Metz' took tea with us. Then Bill, Metz & I went to the show The High School affair. It was fine. We went to a dance afterward. R.C. was home got in at 2 A.M. May Sat 2 Did odd jobs and errands. Had to go to the store awhile as Gail sang at Mr. Cleveland's funeral and Guy went to Hanover to the Vt. vs Dartmouth game. It was a great game 3 to 0 faver of Vt. We girls walked up to Mary M's in the evening and gave her a tin shower, then sewed on dusters for her. She had a lovely little spread for us. It rained all the evening and we walked home in the rain at 10:15. May Sun 3 Church as usual. Cold day. Mr. M. has a bad cold. We girls went for a walk in the afternoon. Mr. Beeden is here also F.C., Helen & I. walked yesterday afternoon. R.C called at 4:30 and we walked down to meeting together at 7:30. He went on the evening train. I saw Mr. Ham, Miss Dubois and Miss Grey for school helps. Coming down with a hard cold feel bum. May Mon 4 Nice day again. Gail brought me up to school we had Leslie with us. Three new scholars today. Still cold. I read awhile and went to bed early feeling bum with a cold. Read Beverly of Granstark quite cute. May Tues 5 Cold cloudy weather. I telephoned home for my brown jumper to wear to a function at E. Braintree. It was a farewell party to the Claflins who have sold out their store. There were a lot there tho' only a few I knew. It was rather a nice evening. Moonlight by spells on the way home. May Wed 6 Rained all day and was some colder. I phoned home they are getting on O.K. Lucy Flint Scribner died last night leaving two children. I finished my book. Quite good to pass the time away but impro- able. Catherine sent up a long letter from Maurine with my dress yesterday. May Thur 7 Still cold and rainy school as usual. I have four new pupils this week. No news and no mail today. I talked with Metz. Wrote a long letter to Aunt Harriet and one to Marjorie also a post card or two. Alden Kenny died today. May Fri 8 10 Had a letter from Helen also some sample books came that I ordered. Rained hard all last night. Dark and damp today. Mother drove up for me. She brought Leslie and Robert. Went to choir rehersal in the evening. May Sat 9 Cooked and worked around the house all the morning. Did errands and went to the library in the afternoon. Grace Gates came on the 5:19. Mother went to the club. Grace F's father and Mrs. F. came on 5:19 to spend Sun. May Sun 10 Church in the morn- ing. Grace G. and Mrs. F went to church with mother. We made candy before dinner. Father and Grace went to the funeral. Dinner at four. Gail and I went down to see Mary Webb at 5:19. Mary Morse & Mary Wedgwood were also there. Mary M. took us for a short ride afterward. Evening meeting. Metz had neuralgia in her eye last night & today. May Mon 11 Lovely warm day. Hope warm weather has come at last. Gail drove up with me. We got here at 8:30. No mail today will look for some tomorrow. Grace G. and mother planned to make calls today. Grace is looking very well. Nice in the evening but rained in the night. May Tues 12 Warmer and rainy 'off and on' all day. Hard shower in the evening. I filled in my register with ink wrote a long letter to Cousin Warren. Broke one lenz of my glasses and sent them to Northfield. Telephoned home in the evening. Went to bed at 8:15 P:M. May Wed 13 Rained all night and in the morning when we got up but cleared off early and was lovely by noon. I went down to R with the Misses Boyce who live across the road. We got there at 6 oclock. The folks were surprized to see me. We all went to see 'The Mayor of Tokyo'. It was fine the scenery was lovely. Got home (E. B.) at 12:15. Nice night but rained toward morning. May Thur 14 Rained all night but cleared off lovely. I swept the school house tonight. When the sun went down there was not a cloud in sight. We went for a walk after supper. Glorious night I hated to come in. A little cool but clear and I think the moon is full tonight (maybe he has been to Braintree.) My glasses came today. Talked with Alice and Gail today. May Fri 15 Perfect day. School as usual. Mother talked with me at noon she wanted to come up for me but I knew she wanted to go to the affair at the church so said I had a way to get down. I closed school at 3:30 and left here at just 4 and walked home They tell me it is 8 miles and I got there at 6:10. I didn't seem to mind it and wasn't lame. The only trouble was I made 4 blisters on my foot. Dressed and went to installation service. It was fine, big house, great night. We entertained Mr. Sweet & Mr. Moseley of Northfield. May Sat 16 Another lovely day. Worked around and did errands in the morning. Mother went to club at Aunt Julia's. So warm everyone went with- out coats. Catherine & I went to a ball game Mr. B went with us. Good game 8 to 1 favor R.H.S. Perfect moonlight night. R.C. and I went to ride. There was a dance and R. wanted me to go when we got back at 10:30 but I didn't think it wise because of my blistered feet. May Sun 17 Another nice day. Church as usual. Fine congregation. Metz, Alice and I went to walk in the afternoon got a big bunch of violets lovely ones. We had a letter from Grace, Hester runs all around. Robert & Leslie painted the piazzas, steps and chairs for us while we were at church. Mother called at the Brighams in the even- ing. Father, Gail & I went to church. Mr. Ferguson gave an address on Temperance. Dandy night but felt some- what 'in'. R.C. went back. May Mon 18 Got up in good season and started at 7:30 for school on my wheel. Arrived at twenty minutes of nine. A little lame as I hadn't been on a wheel for two years. Lost Mother's solid gold fob coming up. Went home on my wheel. We all went to hear Hon. Green of St. Albans He came to address the Brotherhood and they made it open in Music Hall, very good. Mr. B. walked home with Bill and I another lovely night. May Tues 19 Started up at ten minutes of seven, took it easy, looked for job picked violets etc. School as usual Mr. Hollis called a few minutes just before dinner time. Came up on his motor cycle. Bill sent up a gingham dress a waste basket some supplies etc. Lovely night but southerly winds showers probably soon. Ought to have swept the school house tonight but was to dead tired. May Wed 20 Cloudy and has showered off and on. The big girls helped me sweep this noon. I had a long letter from Aunt H. tell asking me she had sent some school supplies and a postal from Marge asking me down to spend Sunday. Sent home for my grey skirt as I want to shorten it. Junior week at Dartmouth and Loule and Pete are there. May Thur 21 Cloudy and showery all day. I wrote Marge accepting invitation. Swept school house after school and did all the work I could to leave things in good shape tomorrow. Planned work ahead etc. After supper I finished hemming my skirt and basted the tucks ready to press. Went to bed at 8:30. John Dubois was married this morning. May Fri 22 Another cloudy and foggy morning. I pressed my grey skirt before school. It sprinkled off and on all morning. I talked with Gail before school. Then 'kids' cut out flowers and pasted on cards in the afternoon. I rode home on Jerd's meat cart got home at twenty minutes of six and rushed to take the 7:12 train. Mother and Bill helped me. Marge met me. We played cards awhile. A Mt. H. friend of Marge's who had been at the Prom. came over in the evening and spent the night. May Sat 23 Lovely warm day. Mr. Wheeler took me to ride in the morning then we read. In the afternoon we to a ball game between H.H.S & R.H.S. the latter got trimmed 9 to 1. In the evening we walked around town and over to see the H.S. kids celebrate. They had a big bonfire. Mr. Camaron was with us. Dartmouth won easily in track meet. Lost in ball game with Amherst. Vt. has great time this year beat Dartmoth. May Sun 24 11 Lovely day again. 'We all' went to church. Marge and I were 'two little girls in blue boys'. Mary is a great girl she sings in the choir. Mr. C. walk- ed up with us and staid till dinner time. We read, visited etc. until time for the train. Mr. Wheeler took us down. Mr. C. came to see me off. Metz, Bill, Allie, and Helen were at the train to meet me, & father and mother with the team. At about 7 Mary W. & Arthur Hollins came. We had ice- cream and talked till eleven. They stayed till the night trains. May Mon 25 Another lovely day. Mother had indigestion all night so Grace and the two boys came up with me. Friday I had a big express package from Aunt Harriet filled with useful things for school. I did a lot of school work, wrote two notes, picked a bunch of violets and went to bed early. Mother isn't any better. Gail has been home all day. May Tues 26 Hotest day yet. Mother felt a little better in the morning and Gail said at night that she had been up all the afternoon and felt better. My pupils made flags and colored them. I gave out a few pieces, we're to have simple Memorial exercises Friday afternoon. Went to prayer meeting with Miss Boyce. And bed at quater of nine. May Wed 27 Another nice, warm day. I wrote a card to Marge and washed my pink muslin dress. Fine luck it didn't fade a bit. Have drill- ed kids on Memorial Day pieces etc. today. Mother feels better and Anna comes to- morrow to help her with the work. Since school washed my hair. Lovely night. Talk- ed with father a few minutes. May Thur 28 Hot day drilled the children of their exercises and had some regular recitations. They boys went for evergreen in the morn- ing and in the afternoon we made ten wreaths. They looked very well and the ladies were pleased with them. The girls helped me swept I fixed the school house up nicely. and was dead tired by night. I washed and ironed my white waist and ironed my pink muslin before breakfast. May Fri 29 it was colder and looked like rain in the morn- ing. I got up at five and went out for some of the tree evergreen. I made a lovely wreath for Aunt Abbie's grave. Fred Jerd took it and my suit case down on the meat cart. I drilled the kids all morning It cleared off and was hot by noon. The exercises went off splendidly There were seven people in. We had lots of lilacs etc. Awfully hot riding home. Choir rehearsal in the evening. Helen came home sick with scarlet fever. May Sat 30 Nice day. I cooked in the morning then Gail and I sewed. Father took us all to the game in the afternoon they only played 3 innings be- cause it rained. game stood 2 to 0 in our favor. Mary Wheeler was up to see their boys play. All the boys were home and we went to a dance. I was hotter --- but we had a dandy time danced every figure. It poured guns went home we got there just at twelve. May Sun 31 Lovely warm day we wore our muslin dresses to church. Sarah asked Gail and I down in the afternoon. Mother and father went to Mr. Denison's funeral. Mr. Beedon walked up with us late in the afternoon. We all went to meeting. Rob came up with me. Catherine goes to Chelsea Tuesday. I had a letter from Pete today and letters from Maurine and Bundy Friday. I'm going to the Dart- mouth Commencement Ball. June Mon 1 Cooler in the morning but I got pretty warm ridding up. Felt mean all day and went to bed in good season. Cold night. I wrote to Helen also a business letter. Alice Mc went over to Woodsville Friday and went on an Auto trip with Mary & Mr. Sargent to lake Fairlee. June Tues 2 Another cool day. I had a fire at the school house. Mother was alone all day yesterday as Anna's mother was sick. I talked with father last evening, They've had a long letter from Mary Smith. I worked at the school house, swept etc until six oclock. We all went to church in the evening. Suppose Metz and her brother went to Chelsea today June Wed 3 Quite a hard frost last night. I wrote a letter to Metz before school time. I talked with Alice at noon. They have closed the Small school on account of scarlet fever. Several cases but so far all have been light. Helen is getting on O.K but six weeks will seem a long while. I worked at the school house until after five. Went to bed early. Talked with father. Not as cold as last night. June Thur 4 Still cool but clear and lovely. Work goes well my head gets aw- fully tired by night. I made a layer cake at noon for Mrs. Rand and filled it with lemon jell after school. I walked out with Miss Boyce after supper. Had a card from Metz today. Alice McIntyre called on me a few minutes this morning, Charles Mann had her out for a ride. Bill has finished my pink muslin hat. June Fri 5 Cool in the morning but grew warmer toward noon. I talked with Metz before school, was surprized to have her call me from Chelsea. Pretty hot riding home reached there at five oclock. Met mother down town. The Cadets were in camps at E. Brain- tree when I came thro. Choir rehersal in the evening. Mother and father worked in the garden. June Sat 6 Hot day again. Mother and I cleaned the halls, stairs and bathroom and chamber work. The Cadets arrived at 10:30 amd went into camp on the circus grounds. In the afternoon I met Metz at the 3 and we went to a ball game between a picked up team and Cadet team, lots of fun: Bill, Metz & I went to the dance in the even- ing and certainly had lots of fun. It was refreshing to have an abundance of partners. We went to see the cadets drill at 7:30. June Sun 7 Another hot day. I wore my pink muslin dress and hat to church. There were sixteen cadets at church some of the fruits of our labor at the dance. Metz was up in the afternoon we went down and visited Helen on the lawn. Then to C.E. and drill. We had some Cadets on the string in the evening two very nice seniors. T'was a corking night and we went up on the park and then home and had sherbet and cidar [cider] on the piazza. Metz stayed all night with me. June Mon 8 Metz, Bill and I got up early and went over to see the cadets break camp. I did not leave home until 8:10 and reached here at 9:05. I certainly was wilted and had the 'dark brown taste' of the cold grew dawn', Metz started for Chelsea at nine oclock, Hotter than - - - - in school today but we got on fairly well considering. I phoned home after supper and went to bed at eight o'clock. June Tues 9 12 Three years ago today I graduated! Sad to relate. Another hot day. Received Loul's graduation announce- ment this morning. Sent a card to Grandpa Holmes its his 9 th birthday. Also wrote a note to Loul and a letter to R.C. I'm going to start a ribbon pin cushion tonight. I helped Allie Mc start one last Saturday. Helen sits up and we visited with her thro' the window Sun. afternoon. June Wed 10 Cooler today and not so hard to teach. I had a card from Maurine, also one from Marge and a dandy long letter from Metz this morning. I started a green and white ribbon pin cushion this morning. Talked with Bill at noon. Answered Metz' letter after school. The daisies and wild roses are out, the children bring me bunches all the while. The days and weeks just fly. June Thur 11 Cooler and breezy. I swept the school house before school. I finished my ribbon pin cushion last even- ing and made the out sides of two more before school this morning. Changed my clothes before at noon and got things ready to start home after school. Glad its cooler. Went home in 40 minutes, we all went to the Graduation exercises and dance and got home at 2 A:M. Had a nice time a number of the boys were home. June Fri 12 I drove up and kept Dolly all day. It was warm. School went as usual. Maurine came on the 1:25 I was sorry I couldn't be there to meet her. She was waiting for me when I drove home and met me at the lib. She is looking finely. She is the first one of the 'big four'. Ex- pects now to be married in October and go to Portland Ore. to live. We certainly are grow- ing up. Well Mr. Hersom is nice. Fine time at the banquet. June Sat 13 Maurine had to go back on the 8 oclock train. George Drew and Miss Frazer were there, Alger Carlton, and a good many. There were 92 there we reached home at 12 and talked til - - - . M. is coming down again in July. Hot day. I did lots of little things and errands in the after- noon. Ironed my white dress in the morning. Called on Nell and Alice Hastings. Choir rehersal in the evening. Perfect moonlight night. June Sun 14 Beautiful morning. Good congregation and splen- did service. Mr. Metzger & Catherine dined with us. Mr. Sherborne and Mr. Wilson came up in the afternoon. Allie Mc__. came over. We went to church in the evening. Dr. Beekman is worse. Mr. Sherbourn is the new lawyer, nice but shy. R.C. is home but I haven't seen him. June Mon 15 Got up at 5 A:M; and started out on my wheel at ten minutes of six. It was cool and nice and I didn't mind the trip. It was lucky that I came early be- cause it began to rain at eight oclock and poured all day. I made a ribbon cush- ion for Mrs. Rand after school. Went to bed at 8:30. Had no recess in the P:M and a short noon hour, let out early. June Tues 16 Rather a cool morning. Talked with Metz at seven. Metz got here at 9:15. Bill spent the night with Mary Morse, she tele- phoned me after I was in bed. It cleared off lovely toward night. Metz and I practised our 'Children's Day' songs with the kids at church then walked up the brook road. After supper we stayed out and sang until 8. Bill tele- phoned again and Bernice. June Wed 17 Lovely morning. I work- ed awhile at the school house also stuffed some eggs for a picnic dinner. I wrote a note of congratulation to Mr. Herson. Bernice and Sarah came up at a little be- for twleve. We went up the brook road and ate our dinner, had a fire made coffee, boiled eggs etc. just had slews of fun. They visited school all afternoon then we rode down to Snowsville with them and walked back. There was a wedding in the afternoon we riced them when they went by. Mr. Metzger officiated. Bed at 9. A week from tonight! June Thur 18 Beautiful day. I got up at a little after five and Catherine at quarter of six. We walked up to Mr. Rand's farm Its up, up, up and I never saw a more glorious view. We got back just about 8:30. Talked with Gail and mother at noon. Mrs. Thayer came last night on her way home from V.A. Catherine and I cleaned some at recess at school. Aunt Hannah, Mary, John and Mary's friend from Missouri came at about 3 and staid the rest of the afternoon. We rode down as far as Untiedt's with them. In the evening we sat out and sang. Don Hutchinson came along and we raised 'Cain'. June Fri 19 Another lovely morning. Clear as a quilt and warmer. Metz heard some of the recitations and I started the Monday's work. It grew very wram before noon. Mother and Mrs. Thayer came for us a little after four. They stayed and made quite a call. When we got home we found Bundy Smith there. I certainly was surprized. He is looking well. Choir rehersal in the evening. R.C. was up afterwards. We had a thunder shower. June Sat 20 Another warm day. I got up at 5:30 and hustled round. Mrs. Wells came and cleaned the halls. Mother and Mrs. T. made calls I cooked, cleaned around and got dinner. Mrs. T. dinned with Mrs. Johnson. I started my belt in the afternoon then did errands down town. Mrs. T. went on the 5:19. It was a hot night. Bundy & I went to a dance but didn't stay long. It was a slow affair. Rob & Jessie drove to White River Jc. this morning. June Sun 21 A little cooler when we got up but grew hot toward noon. I wore my blue dress to church. Bundy went to Bur- lington on the excursion. I felt 'bumm' all morning and did not eat any breakfast. Thot I was going to faint in church so went out. Went to bed and stayed until 4 P.M. Gail and I went down to see Bernice and stayed until meeting time. I didn't go to church, but thot I'd best 'turn in'. June Mon 22 Lovely cool day. Bill brought me up. We had Leslie with us. School went as usual. I stayed at the school house until after six working to leave everything ready for Bernice. Feeling better today. I played croquet after supper at Mr. Boyce's and went to bed at 8:30. June Tues 23 Got up at six. Had Mrs. R's music box going, its a nice one. I miss Metz but am busy. Did school work until school time. Talked with Metz. this morn- ing. Rode home on my wheel took it slowly and picked some flowers on the way. After supper I did various little odd jobs finished my girdle belt etc. June Wed 24 'Hotter than Blitzen' as Bill says. I worked all morning getting ready. Had to go down town etc. Left at 1:25. Met a chap from St. A on the train. Marge met me at the Jc. and I stayed up there until my train went to H. R.C. Jessie and Marjorie met me, with a team. We drove up to Miss Foster's. I was glad to get into my thin waist, it was so hot on the train. We dressed for the hop at about eight. Mr. Foster drove up down to Thornton at quarter of nine. June Thur 25 13 The campus was so pretty lights everywhere. We walked around until quater of ten then went in to the reception. Began to dance at 10:15 and danced until 4:30. The music was great the gowns lovely and everything was great, my pumps stayed on, my hair stayed up and things couldn't have been better it was glorious. We went home by day- light and slept from 5 till 7. Then miss F. Jessie, Marjie, Sarah & I went to the Jc. on the 11:30 train. They went to Enfield & I up to the Wheeler's. R.C. stayed to pack until the 2 P.M. train then he came up to the W's until his train went at 3:30. I got home at 5:19. Went down to see Bernice in the eve. June Fri 26 Drove up to school in the morning and back at night. Expected to feel bum' but was happily disappointed. Rather warm. Mrs. Rand rode down with me, she hadn't been down here since last fall. I brought home six qts. of field berries all picked over, two of my pupils picked them. Choir rehearsal in the evening. Helen has been in quarantine four weeks today. June Sat 27 Another hot day. Worked around the house all morning. Mended and repaired my damaged finery. My belt I had to take to pieces and clean. Did errands in the afternoon and read at the library. Last night before rehearsal we bowled had lots of fun. Bill and I went down town after supper. I picked out presants for my kids. June Sun 28 Another hot dry day. Fine congregation. Mr. & Ann Hammond were at church. The Methodist and Baptist churches have formed a union. Catherines three sisters came last night. Bernice went to Enfield Friday. Bundy has gone to visit Maine and Mass. relatives. June Mon 29 Mr. Mann brought me up. He wanted to exercise his horse. I stopped at Mr. Flints' for the exam questions for the girls. The teacher's had to give them since the town Supt. is out of office. The children were restless all day. I'm glad its the last week. I felt just dead at night. Guess the effects of my dissipation have just arrived. I went to bed at 7:30 Metz and Alice Mc went to Burlington on lib. business this morning. June Tues 30 It rained a little off and on but not enough to do much good. The roads are like 'powdered sugar'. Yes- terday and today have been the longest days so far, beause its the last week I suppose. The girls finished their exams about 2. I worked over their papers until meeting time, then until 9:30. Its a task and a new one to me. Wrote two or three postals before school time. July Wed 1 Got up at 6 and finished marking the papers. I had to write a letter too, got the whole thing off to Mr. Comstock by the morning mail. It doesn't seem possible that it is July 1st Lovely day tho' rather warm. I played croquet after supper awhile and went to bed at 9 P.M. Gail says we are going to camp Aug. 8th. Hooray! I am feeling 'campy' already. July Thur 2 Last day of regular school work. Hot, stuffy day and hard to work. After school I took all my books to the house and packed. Did up and marked my little presents for the kids, helped Cornelius make a kite, played one game of croquet and went to bed early. July Fri 3 Got up at 5 and swept the school house and did last little odd jobs. We spent the time until 11 clearing the desks and packing the books in the cupboard. It looked like rain but cleared off hot. Picnic seemed a great success. I had a peanut hunt and tied the gifts on the tree cobweb fashion- ed. Played 'hide-and-seek'. Father drove up for me. Metz & Allie came on 8:20 great visit no choir rehersal. July Sat 4 A mighty quiet 4th. I think I never was so completely 'in'. We went on a picnic in honor of Miss Robords. It rained some but we had a good time. I just 'lazed'. Wrote two letters and went down at 8:30 to mail one. Welby Mc made us a piazza call. Good dance Music Hall ochestra but too dead to go. July Sun 5 Still hot and dry. I did not stay to S.S. Kept quiet and read all afternoon. The Brighams and Guy's family were here for ice-cream. All went to evening meeting. The Metzger girls walked up with us then we returned the compliment. Lovely moon- light night. Mr. Metzger goes to New York tomorrow. July Mon 6 Still dead tired. Mother and I washed. I return- ed some books in the afternoon and called at the Hastings then went to the lib. Bill and I walked down town in the afternoon evening and watch- ed the people going to the show from the Metzger's steps. Went to bed in fair season. July Tues 7 I got up at 4:30 and Bill soon after we had a huge ironing but got it all finished. I did not get around with my work until late. Then went down town and to the lib. Helen is out of quarantine, yester- day was her first day out. I went to bed early. Horribly hot night the worst yet. July Wed 8 It grew cooler in the night and was really chilly in the morning. I cooked all morning and cut the sleves of a new waist in the afternoon. There is a stock company at the Music Hall and we (father Bill and I) went. It was quite good. 'The Lady of the Ranch.' July Thur 9 I hustled around with my work to get to sewing and got on quite well on my waist but was tired. I went down town in the afternoon and visited with Miss Metzger. Went to bed quite early. Bill is burried in 'Vanity Fair.' Aw- fully warm again. We spent the evening at Uncle Jasper's. July Fri 10 Another hot day. I cooked some and did various and sundries. Then sewed until time to meet Loula. Had a little visit with Mrs. Smith at the station also Mr. Baldwin Bill, Lou and I also father and mother went to the show, very good. July Sat 11 14 Lou and I cooked and sewed, read and visited. Helen and Mr. Beedon called in the afternoon. In the evening Mr. Beedon took us to the show, not as good as the others. Mr. Bald- win called after we had gone. Lovely moonlights nights right along. July Sun 12 Church closed for three sundays. Hotter than hot today and we have just taken it easy. I have written 2 postals and 3 letters. We had a picnic dinner on the dining table, decided it was too hot to go on the hill We wallked down town late for the mail. Then Lou and I went down for some gum at 9: P.M. Glorious moon- light night. July Mon 13 Perfectly huge washing. Mr. Beedon was up awhile in the morning. We sewed in the after- noon and walked down town late. Mr. Baldwin spent the evening with us. It rained a little at about 10 oclock. July Tues 14 Hot still. Mrs. Dutton spent the day with us I cooked all morn- ing. After dinner we sewed. I finished my white waist. Lou and I got dressed at 5:30 which is our stylish hour. Bundy and Milldred came down on the 1:25. Gail, Grace, Lou & I walded [walked] down town in the eve. Band concert. July Wed 15 I got up at 5:30 and ironed. Its cooler and it seems good, a little cloudy but still no rain. Loula went on the 2:56. Metz and Floss were up and we walked awhile after supper. Metz & I called on Louise a little while. Fred H. has been very ill with im- flamation of the bowels. July Thur 16 Warmer again but beautiful, dandy air today. I went up on the hill for ferns for the piazza in the morning. Down town in the after- noon, stayed at store while Gail went to the dressmakers. Helen & Metz walked up with me. Mr. Baldwin went to H.S today. July Fri 17 Grace and Guy, Rob & Bertha Morton started on a picnic about 9 oclock. Mother and I hustled we cleaned the halls, stairs etc, all thro. Bundy went to H.S, on the early train. It began to rain at about noon and kept it up all day and part of the night. We read in the eve. and went to bed early. I made fudge. July Sat 18 Miss Smith came to sew for mother. Gail has ordered a blue wash suit from Thresher's. I have written Maurine to send me down one from Bur- lington. Elizabeth Metzger is sick. I went down in the evening and the girls walked up with me. July Sun 19 Father and Gail went to Church. I walked down with them and got a book at the lib. and the mail. Letter from Grace. Helen, Metz. and Alice came up in the afternoon. We went up on Chandler's then I went home with Metz. Mr. Beedon walked down with us then home with me. John, Miss Robords and Mary called. Pete is at H.S. and wants me to go up quick. July Mon 20 Big washing. Leslie had a birthday party (4 yrs.) I went over and helped. Grace Taylor came on the 5:19. I have decided to teach if I pass. Maurine and Mr. Hersom are going to Louiville Kentucky He is going on with college this fall. Went down to Metz in the evening. Gail's suit came very pretty. Had to be altered a little. July Tues 21 We got the ironing finished. It was a huge one too. My suit came on the 1:25. A little large but can be changed, very pretty. I worked on it in the after- noon. Helen came up. I went down town with the two Graces in the evening. Metz went to Washington with Mr. W. and hadn't gotten home. July Wed 22 Beautiful days. Jolly camping weather. I had a lovely long letter from 'Pa' Wettje last night. Worked around and sewed. Helen came up and I walked down with her. Metz and Ida were up in the evening. Card from Grace they may come Sunday. July Thur 23 Another lovely morn- ing. Worked around and finished my suit. Our suits look fine and we are pleased with them. Miss Smith has made a silk waist for mother and a waist of a percale dress. I was down at Metz' in the evening. Bundy came from Highgate on the evening train Had a great time. July Fri 24 Had indigestion in. the morning and felt rather bumm until after noon. Haven't any appetite weight 99 1/2 lbs. Father says I'm pining for Highgate and I think so too. The Metzger girls, Bill, Helen, Laura and I all went to a little dance got home early and had a good time. Bundy left on the 1:25 for California via Ware, N.Y & Washington & New Or. Just a month ago tonight was the hop. July Sat 25 Guy sent down 16 fine pickerel on the evening train. We hustled until late in the afternoon. Gail & I moved up stairs. I made two kinds of cookies & did the halls and stairs. Helen came up and I did her hair up Cornish braids. Walked down with her & walk- ed with Metz. The Metzger girls and I pranced up and down Main St. in the evening. July Sun 26 Perfectly beautiful day. I took the boys down town for the mail. We all went up on the hill for a picnic dinner. Guy is at H.S. We had sherbet. We went up thro the woods and got some ferns came down by the wood road. It was just perfect. Father carried Eliza- beth all the way. I wrote to 'Pa.' Grace Taylor enjoyed it. R.C. is in town just for the day called while we were on the hill. Gail and I walked down to Bernice's in the evening. Then called at Uncle Jasper's. July Mon 27 15 Mother and I did a perfectly huge washing. We were dead at noon but took short naps and iron- ed all the afternoon. Got dressed at six oclock and went down town. July Tues 28 We got up early and by combining forces finished the ironing at noon. Then we took short naps & hustled all the aftern- noon. Cleaned the house & getting mother & father ready to start. Guy came on the evening train brought 160 lbs. of fish. The fishing is great this year. Mrs. Brook, Florence & Wandy went to Queen City today. July Wed 29 Father & Mother came went on the morning train & Grace, Theron & Hester came. We held a reception all day. I mended in the afternoon we took tea at the Brookes. Catherine came up in the evening. Grace packed over ready to go. July Thur 30 Saw G. T & H off Mrs. Morton went with them as far as Essex Jc. Then I went home & hustled. Left the house in apple-pie order & did my packing. Hot, Hotter, Hottest. Went up on the 3 with Marge & Lucile. Mr. Smith, & Harrison got on at Essex. We saw Maurine, Mr. H, & Mr. Thayer at the station. Went to a Camper's Dance in the evening. Great up here. I weigh 98 lbs hope I gain 10 up here. July Fri 31 Pete & I went 'in' before breakfast it made me feel great. They put up the tent and we got the cottage in order. Very warm. Hester is the cuttest thing. I took a nap on the knoll beyond the boarding house after dinner. we went down for the mail. Read 'The Firing Line' in the evening only two more chapters. August Sat 1 Change in the weather its cooler & clear as a bell. We can see the Adies great . Petie & I had our dip. I took Hester down for the mail. We go for the mail every night and thats about all the excitement we have. Maurine & Mr. H. came on the 6:58. August Sun 2 Nice day. I have been just 'all in'. I read and slept all the even- morn ing and in the afternoon I went down in Cedar grove and wrote letters and read. Sat on the ridge in the evening. Lovely night. August Mon 3 Father and Theron rigged the sail-boat but it did not work real well the center- board wasn't acting well. Sidney Tomphson came today. August Tues 4 Lovely warm day. We all went to an excursion and danced in the afternoon. Mrs. B, Florence & Wanda came on the 11:12 & it was an hour late. Went for the mail as usual. Mr B. took me rowing in the evening. Perfect night. Uncle Walt went this after- noon. August Wed 5 Cloudy and rain- ed a little off & on all day. Mr. B & Mrs. came in the morn. & Mrs. B. & Florence went at 4:20. We sat around and read most of the day. Played the piano some. Went for the mail as usual. Last night So, H, P & S got stalled in the launch & had to paddle to the sail boat that was anchored near Garder Bay and sail in. August Thur 6 Still somewhat cloudy. Father & Theron sail & fish most of the time. I kept quiet all day. We played cards & read. Went to a camper's dance in the evening. Mr. B. brought Lucile & I me home in his boat. We had a good time. C.S. is at St. A. August Fri 7 Sat around and played the piano in the morning. Mr. Baldwin Lucile and I played 500 all afternoon. We went sailing first. It was fine Lucile, Marge & I went over to the point on a bat after supper. Sidney, Pete, Har- & Loula went sailing & got in late the wind went down. August Sat 8 Lovely day. Father, Theron, Lucile, Marge, Mr. B. & J went sailing. Then Mr. B & I fished got 3 nice ones. T & Mr. B. sailed all afternoon. Father & mother Maurine & Mr. H. went on the 4:20. Gail, Fannie, John Miss Whitten & Miss Robords came on the the 6:58. Also Dr. Blanchard's people etc. We sang on the ridge un- til late. I stayed at Rock Ledge. Lovely night. August Sun 9 Beautiful, clear morning. I helped with the dishes, there were 33 at breakfast. Marge, Lucile, Loula & I spent the afternoon at the park. I rode three times on the merry-go-round without getting off. Loul 5. Thurs. Lovely night the crowd went sailing in their bathing suits & then in for a plung [plunge]. I stayed with the baby. Lucile, Loul, John, Mr. B and I sat in the ridge until (7). Excursion at the park we all went over but didn't stay. August Mon 10 We read and played cards and sailed. Not much excitement. Mr. B. and I walked around to the point after getting the mail. We sang again on the ridge and went to bed in good season. Another lovely night but clouded up before morning. August Tues 11 We sailed over & dug arrow heads in the morning I went in John's small boat. We sailed again in the afternoon. It rained a little off & on. I read and took a nap. Jule came on the 7 oclock. We had a fine corn roast in the evening and a sing. Moon was great. August Wed 12 16 Read and walked over to the point in the morning. Jule's people came on the 11:12 also Mrs. Morse & Mrs. Vaughan. We started on a picnic at 1:30. Mr. B & I sailed in his boat & the rest in the big boat and John's new one. We got there first at Phillipsberg. Ate our lunch just a little this side. Dandy place & great time. There were 16 of us. Wind went down & Mr. Hall and towed us home with his launch. August Thur 13 Fine sailing breeze part of the people sailed. Cloudy & rainy by spells. Metz came on the 11:12 A:M. Marge and I went down to the train. Charles S came up & spent the afternoon. We called all around visited most of the time with Mr. B. Dance in the evening. It cleared off toward sundown so we wore white. Miss Roberts went on the 4 20 & John went as far as B__ with her. August Fri 14 Dandy day and nice breeze. We went sailing in the morning expected J. back on the 11:12 but he didn't show up. Grace, T & H went on the 4:20. We started on a picnic at 1:30 Landed over Gander Bay had just a circus. Started home at 7:15 and reached here at 9:30. wind went down & a thunder storm came up but scattered so we didn't get it. The people on shore were scared stiff. Harrison said "I ain't no coward but I wish I was on firma terra". August Sat 15 Perfect day clear & lovely. Mr. B & I sailed all the forenoon I did the sailing & it was great. We dressed up and went to an excursion in the afternoon. In the even- ing we went to a repub- lican rally & then had a corn roast also popped corn it was great sang & had a lark got in at 12:30. August Sun 16 Another perfect day we got up and had a dip before breakfast then had a great old sing. All went sailing in the morn- ing just a little breeze. Excursion from home. John & Lora, Guy Osha & his girl etc were here. Mr. B & I sailed over to the park. We all rode on the merry-go-round. The band played and some danced that in staid old Vermont! Perfect sunset we sat out & talked then made fudge & white pulled candy. Dandy time. August Mon 17 Rained hard in the night & was rainy by spells all morning. Dandy wind the boys went sailing. They thot it was too rough for us. We played cards all the afternoon until train time. Catherine & Miss Whitten went on the 4:20 and we walk- ed down. In the evening we were all invited up to the Thayer's We played 500 & poker had welch rabbit, hot chocolate, waferes & olives Wind blew had [hard] all day. August Tues 18 Wind blew harder than ever. We worked all morn- ing closing cottage; pack-ing etc. The boys took down the tents and put up the boats. Charles S. came up about noon & stayed until we left. We drove to Swanton (the boys got a 4 seater) & took the electrics to St. A. Loula went to St. A. with us. John got left at St. A. hard lines. We (Jule, Gail, Marge, Lucile & I) were in a dandy sleeper by ourelves. Had a fine ride down. The girls staid at the Rowell's. C.S. rode down as far as Essex with us we saw Mr & Mrs [illegible] there. August Wed 19 We did a perfectly huge washing and worked hard. I went down for the girls & did some errands. They (M & L) came up to help me make sandwiches for the picnic. Lovely night & we had a fine time. (M, L, G, J. J, Jim M, Harry Morton & I) The Rowells just wouldn't let M & L come up here to stay so they were only here for an hour or so. Julian has been getting his teeth fixed at SO. Royalton. August Thur 20 We had a woman here to iron all day the rest of us hustled too. Lovely day. Gail & I went down to see M & L off on the 1:25. C.S went thro. The folks are trying a new horse, Grace, Hester & I went driving in the afternoon. We saw C.S. at the 5:19. First night in ages that there has'nt been anything doing. Went down to the lib. & bed at 10! The Russlows & Helen B. came home from camp on the 8:20. August Fri 21 Worked like a Trojan all day. Mother & Grace drove up to the Manchester and brot Miss Treat & Lucia down for tea. They went driving first. I got supper. We had a good one too. Card from 'Pa' W. today. Julian, John, Gail & I went to the show. It was fair, stock company very tragic Its getting cool nights & seems like fall oh dear. C.H.B is still at camp trying to catch some fish to bring home. August Sat 22 Cloudy morning. I cooked and dusted and did the usual Sat's work. Had a nice letter from Lucile. Got dressed late studied a little. Gail, Grace, & mother played cards with Grace F. Mrs. Brigham called and visited with me. Gail, mother & I went down and walked home with father. August Sun 23 Beautiful day. Julian came up be- fore church to say 'goodby' he left on the 1:25. Fine con- gregation. Grace went & mother stayed with Hester. The folks rode in the after- noon I studied. Church in the evening Mr. Beedon Metz, & I took a walk after- and wound up here & ate pop-corn. August Mon 24 Perfectly beautiful day Letters from Marge & R.C. We did a washing & I dusted & cooked. Mother & Grace made calls. I went down to Carrie Draper's for some books & studied. Metz & I served at Mr. Wilson's birth- day party. Swell dinner, ten guests, all men. They had lots of fun, roasted each other in great shape. August Tues 25 Mrs. Race came and ironed etc and we all hustled all day, It was a beautiful day I studied in the afternoon and we all went to the hash supper in the evening. I stayed home and studied. No Gail, Grace & I made calls on Edith Marcott & cousins Ruth Wood and Mrs. John Dubois. August Wed 26 Its grown decidely cooler. I was sick in bed all the forenoon my digestive 'works' are in bad shape. I think its the change in the weather I studied in the afternoon and went to bed early. August Thur 27 I cooked all the morning made two cakes and a desert. Got dressed be- fore dinner. We began our exams at 1:30 did just two subjects Arith & Hist. rather stiff. Walked down to the lib. in the evening went to bed early. August Fri 28 17 Exams all day they are fierce. Choir rehersal early. Grace & Gail went to a musical at the Emery's, Father & I stayed at the lib. awhile then I walked. Lovely starry night. August Sat 29 Finished the exams so that the papers went on the 10:17. Bet I flunked. Got some pictures from Lucile of the sail boat etc. dandy. Came home and hustled all morning. Mother & Grace went to a party at Mrs. Blanchard's I took care of Hester. E. Metzger & Catherine spent the even- ing with us. Mr. B walked up with me. August Sun 30 Another lovely day. We had a fine congre- gation & service. We all had dinner at Guy's. Father took the two Graces to ride & the children. Helen, Laura, Alice & Mr. B. were here in the p:m. We walked. Meeting in the evening. August Mon 31 Got allready to up to school and Mr. Com- stock telephoned at quarter of eight that I would have my certificate. Grace and Hester went up with me. Its a fine little school house and know I'm go- ing to enjoy it. I walked home. Walked down town in the evening. September Tues 1 My certificate came last night and its a two years' hooray! tho I only care to teach two terms but it shows a good per cent. I rode my wheel its very dusty. Gail and I went down to the library in the evening. September Wed 2 I rode up again it isn't a bad ride. School goes finely. I wrote a letter to Marge at noon. I had to sweep the cupboard & the desks Monday very dirty and un- tidy. Rode home in 19 mins. It rained just after I got there. I made a jelly-roll cake & a batch of cookies be- for supper. Went to bed early. September Thur 3 It looked like rain and G took me up. Its grown cold. I wore my brown jumper. Grew nice- er toward night. I swept the school house. Gail and Stella spent the afternoon with Mary Morse then drove around for me. Read in the evening. 'Our Mutual Friend' is getting excited. September Fri 4 G. took me up in the morning looked like rain but cleared off. Mother, G, H, R & L came up for me. We stopped at Hutchinsons' for crab apples. Short choir rehersal in the evening. Guy, Grace, Gail Father, Grace J and I bowled. Had lots of fun. September Sat 5 Grace & Mother 'put up' 8 qts. of plumb & made 14 jars of crab apple jelly. I made cup cakes, a coffee walnutcake, cup custards and some wal- nut cookies. Went down to the lib. to get some school things in the afternoon. Mil Peck was here to tea. We went over to see Mary's house in the eve. then bowled. R.C. is in town just for a day. September Sun 6 Got up early and all went to church. Fine congregation and ser- mon. Mrs. A. E. Chandler sang beautifully. 4 received into membership. Guy's folkses & ourselves took our dinner up on the hill & spent the afternoon. We had a fine time. Church in the evening. September Mon 7 Rode up to school in the morning. Grace and Mother did an enormous washing. School goes alright its terribly hot and dusty rid- ing. I make for the tub every night when I land. Grace, Gail Mary, Catherine and I bowled. Florence has a dreadful cold. It grows quite cool now evenings. September Tues 8 Another hot morn- ing. I ironed a little be- fore I went up to school. Mother had a woman here ironing all day. Grace has caller a great deal. All tired we went to bed in good season. Still hot and dry. September Wed 9 I had four new pupils. Catherine is staying at the Wedgwood's Mr. M went down to N. Y. Sun. night with Elizabeth to see Mrs. M. Mrs. G.E. Chandler was here when Grace and I came home we had a very pleasant call with her. Went down to the lib. in the evening. Mary Morse and Edward Mason were mar- ried at noon today September Thur 10 I start anywhere from 8 to 8:15 mornings and it gives me plenty of time. Mary Webb was down I met Dewitt and she driving home. Grace and Theron will soon be to- gether again we hate to have G & H. go. Aunt Hannah & Mary were here to tea. We (G & I) went down to Clara's in the evening. Finished 'Our Mutual Friend' great September Fri 11 Hester has had a little cold but is better. Its grown warmer again. I nearly melted coming down on my wheel. We all went to see Grace off. Hester was good but sleepy we did hate to see them go. Mr. Beedon was on the train. R.C. is in town. He's finished his job. C. H. B. is back from Boston. September Sat 12 A warm day again. Mother and I rasled cleaning the house and I sewed with Mrs. Libbey on my blew waist. Got a blue skirt. Went down to the lib. in the evening. Helen, Metz, Alice and I walked. Lovely night. Saw Mr. Beedon, he walked with me then R.C. went down to the lib. with me. September Sun 13 18 Fine congregation & sermon. 4 taken into mem- bership. Cool in the morning but grew hot. Helen & Laura were up a few minutes in the afternoon. I led C.E. After eve meeting R.C. came up with me and spent the evening. The water is very low every- where the lights go out at about nine nights. September Mon 14 Still no rain. Springs that have nev- er been dry are dry now. Lake Champlain hasn't been so low in thirty years. Mr. Lewis the district supt. called. I had a headache all day. Bill has a dread- ful cold. We all went to 'Quincy Adams Sawyer' it was fine. I've seen it twice. Little Robert is three years old today. September Tues 15 Cooler I have my blue waist to wear now. Have had letters from Marge and Mrs. Thayer lately. Loula goes to St J. tomorrow and they all leave Rock Ledge Thurs. Maurine has been spending a week there & Mr. H. was up over Sun. We went over to Mrs. Morton's a little while in the evening. Went to bed early. September Wed 16 Cool in the morn- ing but grew warm at noon. Northfield Fair began today. Grace's Aunt Alma from Burling- ton. Aunt Mary & Cousin Leo (U.S. counsel) from China reached here on the 1:25. Mr. Bergholz had to go back to B this afternoon. Aunt A & Aunt M. will be here til Friday. September Thur 17 Still terribly dry and dusty and the air is so full of dust & smoke that the sun looks like a red ball of fire. Never saw any- thing like it. Lake Champlain hasn't been so low in 30 yrs. We boil the water now the reservoir is so low. Aunt A. & Aunt M. spent the even- ing with us also Guy & Grace. R.C. was here too. C.E. social but we didn't go. September Fri 18 Just the same weather. Leslie & Edith Oakes came on the 1:25. Aunts A & M went on the 3 & Mortimer came on the 8:20. We went to choir rehersal then up to the train. Sang and raised cane till late. Leslie & Edith have anounced their en- gagement. Morty is look- ing fine. September Sat 19 The smoke has cleared and it is beau- tiful but so dry. I got up early and rasled. L & E, M & I walked around till din- ner time. They didn't get up until 9 A.M. Letters from Marge & Maurine today. We Grace, Leslie, E, M & I bowled bowled in the afternoon then M & I played base-ball. In the even- ing Mr. & Mrs. Hollis, Mrs. B. Chandler, Mr. Baldwin and our own crowd were a[t] the house. We played 500, sang and played 'Up Jenkins' until 12:15. Had welch rabbit, cidar & candy. Cool night, fire in the firepl[ace] September Sun 20 Grace, Guy the two boys, Edith, Leslie, Mor- timer & I took our dinner up in Rochester Hollow. The views were beautiful, the leaves lovely but the dust awful. We had dinner by some falls, great time. Leslie took our pictures. We got home just in time to get dressed before 5:19. We serenaded Grandpa H: he was pleased. Mortimer took us all for ice-cream while waiting for the train M, L & E all went. Arthur Hollins came on his way to E. Granville stopped at the house a few minutes. Went to meeting. R.C called after meeting. Cool night fire in the f-p September Mon 21 Have been coming down with a cold since Sat. night. Rode up to school as usual, felt bum all day. Mr. Adams called on business. Swept the school house early. Awful weather, smoky but clear sky no signs of rain the dust is fearful. Felt wretched when I got home and went to bed early. Letter from Grace, all well. Hester hasn't minded the heat. September Tues 22 Another day of the same old kind. Felt a little better today. Filled in my register and did several odd jobs at school. I have fifteen pupils now. Nice letter from J.W. this morning. He is in N.Y. for short time. Washed my hair when I got home. We had our first club meet- ing at Mary Morse Mason's. fine time. Its grown warmer the last two days. September Wed 23 Got up early. Father and mother started for the State Fair at White River Jt. at 8 oclock. Big crowd to take the train. Heavy fogg this morn- ing but no clouds. I walked down to the lib. after supper then around to Nell's a few minutes and up to meet the folks. They had a great time at the fair. Great crowd there in spite of the dust. September Thur 24 Just the same kind of weather. Fogg in the morning and hot and clear at noon. Gail went up to Mary Webb's wedding with Mr. Metzger. She was the only guest aside from relatives. She staid un- til the evening train and came down with Florence, Dewitt and Clarance. I met them. Had a ripping headache all day. September Fri 25 DeWitt, Florence and Wanda started for Key West on the 10:17. Ano- ther warm day. I've been 'doing' the eye and ear test on the kids the last two days. Glad to get it finished. Wrote to J.W. Choir rehearsal in the evening. We practised some new music. The lights go out at about 9:30 these nights because of low water. September Sat 26 Mother and I 'rasled.' 'Did' the halls and stairs, cooked, washed and ironed my grey silk waist etc. I took care of Robert, Leslie and Eliza- beth while Grace went to the Book Club reception. 'Jones Mertle' is away over Sunday. Bill & I went down to the then bowled one game over in the Parish House. September Sun 27 Fine sermon and splendid congregation. Still no rain. Hot day. We loafed all afternoon and read. Guy, Grace and the boys went to ride. Looks some what like rain. Meeting in the evening. September Mon 28 Mother made Fifteen baskets of grapes into juice. I found her about dead when I got home. It looked like rain all day and began in the evening we staid home and read. Cool evenings, we're use- ing our fire-place these days. Went to bed early. The papers say there's a cold wave com- ing. September Tues 29 19 School goes as usual. I wrote a long letter to Grace at noon. I haven't been feel- ing especially well lately. Annis and Henry Baldwin came over to say 'goodby' at noon they go to Essex Jct. and to Mexico soon. Mother went down to say 'good- by to Mrs. Mead in the evening. I walked down with her & went to the lib. a while. September Wed 30 Its a little cooler now mornings and I have to have a little fire at school. Letter from R.C. last night he's back at work. Gail and I went down to the lib. a little while in the evening. Had a visit with Metz. she had been to the Tunbridge Fair and had a great time. Guy went to N. Y. on a business trip today. October Thur 1 Colder and looks like rain. I felt bum all day. It began to rain in the even- ing and rained hard all night. It did seem good to hear it come down. Gail has heard from Mary. She is on Mass. Ave for the pre- sent. We read and went to bed early. Grace was over for awhile. October Fri 2 Nice old fashioned drizzly rain. I drove up to school and up Dolly in Mr. Jerry's barn. It was awfully cold. I had to have a fire all day. Felt some better than yesterday. Did one or two errands with the team for father when I got home. No choir-rehearsal. Father and mother went to a G.A.R. affair Col. Chandler spoke. October Sat 3 Hustled all morning. Cooked and did several odd jobs that have been hang- over me. Mother went to the club in the afternoon I went down to the library and Helen and I walked awhile. We sewed and read and went to bed in good season. Mary Mason was in a few minutes. October Sun 4 Cold day but nice Good congregation and fine sermon. Grace and the children were over in the afternoon. Bill and I went down to Chedel's late to call on Sara and her cousin. Sara sang a solo at evening service. Cold night, bed early again. Its hard to 'break away' from the fire-place nights. October Mon 5 Coldest morning we've had my fingers and toes were really cold. It warm- ed up at noon and was clear and beautiful when I rode home. Found mother had been varnishing the floors of the laundry, pantry etc. In the evening father & she did the kitchen floor. The lights went out early and we went to bed. October Tues 6 Not quite as cold as yesterday morning but have to have a fire every day at school. A per- fect day not a cloud. I was late getting home as I had some work to do. Stopped & visited with Metz a few minutes. We all went to see 'Pierre of the Plains' in the evening. Edgar Selwin the star, is perfectly fine in the part of 'Pierre' the whole cast was good its one of the best things we've had. Perfectly beautiful night. October Wed 7 Another nice day a little warmer yesterday and today, but have to have a little fire to take the chill off. The scarcity of water is getting to be a problem everywhere. Hundreds are out of work in the factory cities. At St. Albans the dwelling houses are limited to an hour's use of water a day. Our reservoir is lowering. Several springs are being formed into an 'annex' over on the bank by sand hill. Went down to the lib. a few minutes in the evening. October Thur 8 A little cooler than yesterday and not as clear. I took my dinner down to the Terry's as Flossie was alone. Didn't feel 'tip- top' all day. We all went to a Harvest supper at the Parish House. It ws a fine supper & a good many there. Club met at Stella's we had a good time. Metz and I both felt bum and I was sick till after twelve o'clock October Fri 9 Colder again and looks like rain. I went down to Terry's awhile at noon. Mother put the second coat of varnish on the kitchen floor. Catherine went to a corn husk- ing over at East Bethel. It was a High school affair. We had a choir rehearsal at Mr. Metzgers. It rained a little at about five oclock but cleared off and was beautiful and moonlight when we went home. Guy came back from N.Y. Wed. He had a fine time. I'm feeling better. October Sat 10 Saturday Mother and I rasled all day. I cooked, swept my room and did some mending. Mother, Mrs. Brigham, Mrs Brooks and I went to the King's Daughter's Tea in the after- noon - Lovely day. We sew- ed and read in the even- ing. I finished 'The Sign O' the Jack 'O Lantern' and 'The Close of Day'. October Sun 11 It rained hard from 12 oclock till about 7:30. Cleared off lovely. Good congregation fine sermon. I had to sing in SS. We read in the afternoon and I made candy. Robert and Leslie, Guy and Elizabeth came over. Gail and I had to sing at C.E. Sara and Jessie Chedel were up a little while before meeting. October Mon 12 It was colder than Greenland and the wind blew so hard that I took my pony up and left her at Terry's again. It was not quite as cold when I went home. Bill, Sara, Helen and Mary, Metz and myself went down and bowled in the even- ing. Sara won. Lovely moon but cold. October Tues 13 Not as cold as yester- day but cold enough. Clear and beautiful when I rode home. Mr. Hollis came up on his motor cycle, tied my wheel to his by a rope about 15 ft long and towed me home flying. It took us less than 15 ms. People stared, we certainly cut a dash. I went to 'A Bunch of Keys' in the even- ing with Mr. & Mrs. H. We had a good time at the dance after the play. Sara spent the night with us. October Wed 14 Nice day, clear and beautiful. I wrote a letter to Lucile had one from R.C. Bill and I de- cided on my winter hat arrangement. Then we went down to the library a while. Stopped in at Mary Mason's on the way home. Maurine is to be married a week from to- night. Mother put the 3d coat of varnish on the kitchen floor Mon. & we're doing light housekeeping. October Thur 15 20 Lovely day again. So warm that I sat out on the 'lawn' to eat my lunch then went down to visit with Flossie awhile. Helen came up with her uncle to Hutchinson's then came up and visited my school until after eleven. The floor was mopped last night It seems good to have it clean. Went down town & then made butter scotch before supper. The club met with us. Mrs. Metzger and Albert came tonight. A is looking fine. October Fri 16 Another lovely day I enjoy my rides these days, we're having Indian summer weather. Little Elizabeth isn't a bit well. Had two visitors at school all afternoon. Postals from Grace Gates and Ralph H. today. Choir rehearsal in the even- ing. Catherine was at Tun- bridge and didn't get home un- til late. I am reading 'Half a Rogue'. October Sat 17 Another beautiful, warm day. I taught to have an extra day next week. Mother had a paper on 'Alaska' at the club today. I got some new shoes and gloves and Lora trimmed my hat for me. Mother went to bed at six oclock with indigestion. Bill and I stayed home and read and sewed in the even- ing. Warm night but very dark. October Sun 18 Nice warm day. Fine sermon and congregation Mr. Beedon and Helen were at church. I wore my new hat it is perfectly huge. We had such a good dinner I ate just slews. Mother is better. Little Elizabeth is still sick and Leslie isn't feeling very well. Metz, Helen, Alice, Bill and I walked over res- evoir hill and called at Morse's then down the road. Beautiful day but dry. No lights in the streets. First Union service met in Methodist Church. October Mon 19 Very smoky this morn- ing there are forest fires on Brandon and Rochester Mts. Warm early but grew cooler toward noon. Today is Helen's birthday. Elizabeth is a little better. Had a nice long letter from Marge yesterday. We stayed home all the evening and I sewed and got things into shape to go to Essex. The first meeting the Brother Hood Club met tonight. John Chase is in town and of course Helen is enter- taining evenings. October Tues 20 Nice warm day. Still very dusty and dry. Stella W. hasn't been well lately. We all had so many little things to do we thot best not to have a club meeting. Saw Alice a minute at the lib. Wed. con. where she had been 3 days with a cold on her lungs and ashema [asthma]. She got up just in time to be married at 8:30 and had to stay there that night. Every- one in Essex thot they went away. The refreshments were fine punch, sandwitches, chicken salad, ice-cream & cake. George Drew & Harrison served. October Wed 21 Cool morning but clear and nice. Alice, Metz, Helen and I took the early train for Burlington. We were a spiffy crowd. Mr. Thayer met us at Essex we left our suit cases and went into B on the Electrics. We to Nicholson's first to see about our furs then went around the stores until 12. Dined at Dorn's, shopped, called on cousin Leo. Counsel to China, on Prof. Merril and shopped. Got out at Essex at 6 P:M. See Tues. - Found M__ in bed October Thur 22 Mrs. Cheney was the only Smith relative present. Mr. & Mrs. Wheeler & Grandma S. were kept away by the later's [latter's] illness. Maurine has lots of lovely clothes her underclothes are beautiful. Her wedding dress is a silvery silk with light green strip very girl- ish & pretty she looked fine in spite of her paleness. Her suit is copenhagen blue with an all black hat. We danced and visited until 11:30 last even. Then we 4 stayed at the hotel & had slews of fun. This morn- ing we visited until our train left at 11:20. We spent the rest of the day in Montpelier went to legislature etc. Alice stayed in Burlington. October Fri 23 School again and choir rehearsal in the evening. We looked for Mr. & Mrs. Hersom a little on the 1:25 and the even- ing train but they did not come. I went home before the train came with acute indigestion, have had it quite a bit lately. Think I neglected to say the Rev. Homer White married M & R. Mrs. White was there also. We girls arranged the flowers. They had carnations and great bunches of white chrisanthemums. I fastened the bride's dress and arranged the flowers in her hair. Helen started for Boston, Manchester etc. today. October Sat 24 Lovely day. Mother and I cooked, spruced up the house etc. Bill & I met the bride and groom at the 1:25. After visiting awhile Mr. H or Ralph got a train and we drove around the village. M is feeling better but not very spritely as yet. Mr. Beedon was up in the evening. He went with me while I did an errand down on school st Darker than pitch and the air feels like rain. Dr. Beekman is very ill again. October Sun 25 It rained some in the night but not enough to do much good. M & R went to church with mother. I did not stay to S.S. Grace & Guy dined with us. Mrs. Metzger & Albert & Metz were up in the afternoon. M & R made a few calls. Today is Mr. Metzger's & Mr. Gay's birthday. Mrs. Blanchard gave a dinner party for them. Mr. B was up in the evening & we walked down & got Catherine. We played duets, visited ate apples etc. Mr. B. told me a secret. M is feeling better. Mrs. Lamb (mrs. Vial's mother) died last night. October Mon 26 Looked very much like rain when I started for school but rode my wheel. M & R went on the 10:17. Catherine & Bill gave them some confetti for which I'm glad it would have been too bad for them to haven gotten off scott free. They went to Bethel to spot off one train & then go on to White River. Bill drove up for me as it rained at 4 & had nearly all day, a nice slow rain. Bed early. October Tues 27 Father brot me up to school. It hasn't really cleared off yet. I worked on school work all last evening then read in 'Pierre and his People' by Sir Gilbert Parker, its fine. Rode my wheel home tho it was a little muddy. Metz & I listened to the ochestra practising in the Music Hall until supper time. Read & retired early. Letter from Grace all fine. Mother was invited out for tea. We had a thunder-storm at about 6:30 oclock. October Wed 28 Cloudy and misty but rode my wheel. Rather muddy but I've no kick coming, I prefere mud to dust. Harry Phillips, Bess & Alice Woodward came yester- day & the baby of course. We all wish it would rain more. It began to rain at about 2 and keep it up. Our team went to Braintree with a load of goods so they were com- ing after me with a stable team but I rode my wheel home. I was a sight. Bed early. October Thur 29 It rained nearly all night and was so muddy that I took the team. It grew colder and the wind blew toward night and the roads were dryer when I started home. We went to club meeting in the even- ing down at the Wedgwood's. We read Stodard's lecture on Scotland. Metz & Stella were not there. This is my 9th week of school tho' it doesn't seem possible. October Fri 30 Still looked like rain so I took the team again. Mary Webb Hollins went tho to East Granville on the 3 oclock. They gave a social for 2 or 3 of the primary classes in the evening & Bill had to go there. I went to that after choir rehearsal then Bill, Alice & I went down to a High School halloween dance & had a real good time. Metz was going but had to go to Failee & didn't get home until after eleven 12 oclock. Dark as a pocket & cold. October Sat 31 21 Mother was sick and stayed in bed until dinner time. I baked apples, made a layer cake & filling, made a steamed apple pudding, had roast beaf & sweet potatoes for dinner, dusted the front rooms, halls, stairs & bathroom. Went down town & to the lib. in the afternoon & walked up to Wilson's with Metz. Mother was O.K by night but had to cut out the Club. Mary Mason was over in the even- ing we made some little table decorations for Tues. night we're going to give a little party for Mary H. Bed at 11 November Sun 1 Cold windy day. Gail went up to East Gran- ville on the morning train to spend the day at the Webb's Quite a number at church for a cold day. Had a good dinner. Guy's people were all over in the afternoon. Metz came up & we took Leslie, Robert & Albert to walk. They had a great time, we call ed on Nell a minute. Union meeting at our church. Metz, Grace & Guy & I were invited to the Hollis' for lunch. Metz stayed all night with me. Bed at 11:15. We're going to give a little party for Mary W. Tues. night. November Mon 2 It was cold but clear and beautiful when I started for school. Clarance brot Bill down. It clouded up toward night and looked like rain. I hurried home from school and in the eve. we made maple sugar candy, crystal, pepper- mints & checkerberries, & jellie with nuts, sliced bannans & tokay grapes, it came out fine. Robert C. came up & assisted us by cracking butternuts, putting shucks down our necks etc. Father went to Brotherhood Club. Mother played cards at Aunt J's Bed at 12. November Tues 3 Still cloudy and looked very much like rain all day. The great election day! I hurried home from school we had so much to do. I made a cake. We used Grace's mexican tablecloth and had little pink hearts with a bride's head on each one for place cards, had a little pink candle in pink tissue standard. We had four large candle sticks & three big white crysanthemums in the center of the table. Everything was lovely & the table looked fine. We played games etc. Beside the club girls were Alice Woodw__, Lyla Putna__, Grace, & Mary. Menu creamed oysters on toast, hot chocolate, cake, Mary Ann's, candy, olive. November Wed 4 Mary is looking fine. We didn't get to bed until about one we did all the work first. Everyone seemed to have a good time. Well Taft was elected by a big majority. Guy and father stayed down to the Parish House until late they served a lunch, had it open to the public to get the returns. Gail & I saw Mary off then I went on to school. We had several hard showers but I managed to escape them. Big change in the weather my hands nearly froze going home. I went to bed early November Thur 5 Snow in the air all day and the roads some frozen but I got along O.K. School goes splen- didly these days, it doesn't seem possible that this is the tenth week. I had a fine long letter from 'Pa' Wettje the first of the week and wrote an eleven page letter to Bernice. Father, Gail & I went to see 'A Knight for a Day' and it was very pretty & funny too - A Musical Comedy. Mary went back to Boston today. November Fri 6 Mother has been hav- ing a woman to help her clean this week and the house is getting in fine shape. Mother expects an old friend Helen Tozer to spend two days with her, next week on her way from Minnesota to Maine. The roads were rather hard this morning but it was clear and beautiful. Mr. & Mrs. Terrill nee (Lily Brooks of Boston are at Aunt A's for a day returning from a trip to Montreal. Arthur was engaged to Alice, L's sister. Choir rehearsal in the evening. November Sat 7 Cooked and did the usual work mother and I called on Mr. & Mrs. T a few minutes before dinner they left on the 1:25. Lovely day. I went down town to the lib. and called on Nell, Saw Mr. B eedon a few minutes also C.H.B. Mother had an errand at Charles Granger's in the even- ing and I went over with her. Lovely moonlight, warmer and feels like rain. November Sun 8 Rained a little when we came out of church but cleared off in the afternoon. Metz and I went to walk then had Rabbit and went to C.E. Bill and I stayed with her while Mr. & Mrs. M went to the evening meeting. After they came home had tea and visited. Its clearing off colder. Guy and a party started for their camp today. November Mon 9 The first day of deer hunting and I've heard of three that were killed. Rather cold and the roads ruff but I hope to do it one week more, warmer when I went home. Went down town awhile before supper. Worked & rumaged in the attic on school things all evening. Started a letter to Marge today. November Tues 10 Misty morning not as cold as yesterday. My two deer-hunting boys were at school today for which I'm glad, as I won't have to report them. Mr. Hollis came back from Mass. tonight his wife & babies are going to spend 2 mths. with her mother he has a room at our house. We went to club at Jennie's had a good time. It rained when we came home. November Wed 11 Heavy mist al- most rain but I road my wheel up rather muddy. It began to rain at about recess and kept it up. Bill drove up for me. I had a phone message from Bessie Silver- thorne asking me to go up there Friday night for a dance. Bill had a committee meeting & I had an errand at Mr. Lewis' in the evening. Xmas arrangements, for the church are under way a big cantata is the plan this year November Thur 12 I walked up to school it was too snowy for my wheel. Bill ironed my pink muslin for me. I walked home and did some errands. Did various little odd jobs getting ready to go to Northfield. It has grown colder. I am begining to think of clos- ing exercises. I have some cough and am getting a little weary. Bought some new pink stock- ings. November Fri 13 It was stormy & colder in the morning and Mr. Powers took me up to school. It grew warmer and sunny towards noon. We grew in the afternoon & got out early. Mother came up for me. I made the 5:19 O.K it was over a half hour late. Metz, Bill & Miss Johnson were there to see me off. Bessie & Mr. Park met me. We had supper and dressed starting for the dance at about 9. Mrs. S. went with us. We had a fine time I danced every figure November Sat 14 con[t.] - and at about 2:15 we went down to the club rooms and had supper. We got to bed at 3:30 A:M. It was lovely in the morning Mr. Park 'saw me off' in the 10:17. I helped mother the rest of the morning and went down to the lib. in the afternoon. Mother went to the club. I had a tearing headache and went to bed at 6:P:M Beautiful day. Had a letter from Maurine last night they are getting settled in their flat Grace went to Burlington this A:M took Leslie with her. November Sun 15 Bill's & my furs arrived last night, father and mother pranced up stairs with them on over their night gowns before th we were up. It was a cold blowy day so we wore them to church. They are lovely big sable muffs and stoles. Father and Bill had to go to a funeral. Metz & I went to walk. Mr. Beedon came up to get me to go walking but I wasn't home. Wrote two letters and went to meeting in the even- ing. November Mon 16 Rather cold and snowy I felt bum with my cold but walked to school and home again. Catherine and I helped Mrs. Blanchard entertaining about 40 kids at Helen's 12th birthday party. I feel wretched and went to bed in good season. Father, Guy and Mr. Hollis went to the Brotherhood meeting. There were 97 there. Rather a cold night. November Tues 17 Still Thanksgiving weather. I felt just sick when I got up and the folks thot I'd better not go to school but as its the last week I thot I'd stick it out. Took Dolly and drove both ways. We went to the Club over to Alice Woodwards and had a good time. I had a letter from Helen. Metz & I heard from some postals we wrote for a lark last June when we were at Alder Meadow. November Wed 18 Another snowy day. I took Dolly again. I've been busy evenings and spare minutes lately getting ready for Colonial & Thanksgiving Exercises the last day. The children do well with their recitations etc. I wrote a long letter to Maurine in the noon hour. The school house looks fine. I have the best drawings up on lines at the sides of the room and papers. Gail took tea and spent the night with Mary M. M. Jim is up at Brookfield his father is very ill. November Thur 19 Took Dolly again and it began snowing before I got to school. It snowed hard all day and I should say there were 3 ins. when I came home. Met one or two sleighs on the way. We practiced the exercises and made calendars that I gave the children, they were very pretty and they seemed pleased. Last Sat. Dartmouth got trimmed by Harvard 6-0 which wasn't bad. Last year I was in Boston and saw D trim H. 22-0. November Fri 20 Gail took me up to school and Mother & Mrs. Brooks came up for the exercises, we had eight visitors. Everything went off well. The big boys presented me with a vase filled with chocolates. I still feel bum but some better. We went to see 'Black Beauty' in the evening. It was very good much better than we anticipated. Wrote a letter to Helen last night and started one to 'Pa' W. November Sat 21 Perfectly beautiful day, clear and warmer. Mother went to the 'Club Launcheon'. I did some errands down town, Metz & I had some penny pictures taken, then Mr. Beedon and I went for a walk then came home & visited for two hours, the president should have us in his cabinet. Mr. Hollis and father are going to bowl in the tournement they are practising all the time. November Sun 22 Another beautiful day. The church was filled Mr. H. had dinner with us & I didn't stay to S.S. Mr. B. walk- ed up with me. We went to walk in the afternoon then down to the 5:19 to meet Helen. Meeting in the evening. Fred C. & Evelyn Derry walked with us or we with them awhile. My cold is better. Grace & Leslie came back from B__ Friday. L & R were 'tickled to death' to see each other again. November Mon 23 Mother & I hustled round and cooked got the house in order etc. I cleaned my plaid silk waist Lovely day, we dressed be- fore dinner I worked on my register awhile then went down town. Went to the lib. a few minutes & call- ed on Nell. Went down to see Helen after finishing my register then down and watch- ed them bowl awhile. November Tues 24 We've been rather late getting up these morn- ings. Mother washed my grey skirt yesterday and I pressed it and it looks like new again. Club met at Mary Mason's and we had lots of fun. She played the graphaphone and we didn't get home until about eleven. It was awfully dark. Mr. Mason is better. November Wed 25 Mother and I cooked and hustled all morning. I was 'all in' by noon and went to bed at 2:30. I slept until 20 mins. of five. went to meeting with father then we girls went together to a Dance music was fine the M. H. ochestra and we had a good time. Grange Hall has been fixed up. I had a letter from Margaret last Sunday she hustling in college. Mr. H went to Natick this morning. November Thur 26 The snow is all gone and its so warm it seems like spring. Guy went rabbit hunting early. We had dinner at 2. Just Guy's family and ours this year. We had a fine dinner. Bill and I took the boys to walk awhile then went to walk ourselves. Mother & father spent the evening with the Brookses and B & I played 'Pedi' with Grace and Guy. Very warm night. November Fri 27 A little cooler but still quite warm. I went down town on an errand after we'd finished the kitchen work no cooking today. Love- ly day I was out walking in the afternoon with Helen. The choir rehearsal was here as the Parish House was busy. John C. was in town for thanksgiving. The Chedels all went to Franklin. November Sat 28 A perfectly beautiful day. I took Stanhope, Leslie and Robert walking all the morning. Mother went to the Club and I walked with Helen and called on Nell. In the even- ing Mother, Bill and I went to the moving picture show but I don't give two skips for moving pictures they give me a head ache. Grace keeps writing us how cunning Hester is and we are crazy to see her again. November Sun 29 Another lovely day. The church was filled. We got out as soon as we could and went to walk. Alice, Helen, Catherine, Bill & I. We walked all afternoon, came home wrote some letters and went to evening meet- ing. It seems more like spring than the beginning of winter. November Mon 30 Mother and I cooked and cleaned up around all the morning. It rain- ed 'off & on' all day. Mother went to a com m ittee meeting and I sewed until late then went down town. I'm starting an everyday waist. Mr. H. came on the 5:19. I went down & watch- ed the bowling with Mr. & Mrs. Brooks. Father & Mr. H. bowled the highest score. They had a fine supper & meeting at the Brotherhood. December Tues 1 Leslie & Stanhope were here most of the morning and I was in- terrupted so much I didn't get on much with my waist. Robert had a slight operation today. I took Leslie to walk in the afternoon. Metz went to Chelsea today to testifie [testify] at court. Club met at Stella's. it is growing much colder and the wind howled all night. December Wed 2 23 Wind has blown like 'the old boy' as mother says, all day. Finished the house work early & sewed. Leslie, Robert & Stanhope play- ed out & in all morning. Its lovely & clear but so windy. We sewed all afternoon and I went down town late. Spent the evening at home all read sewed etc. The wind still blows. My vacation is getting gone oh! dear! 'ain't it awful Mabel?' December Thur 3 Clear day but colder than Greenland's Icies. Mother and I cooked and sewed. I'm having a 'darned' time with some tucked sleeves I'm making. I went down to the 5:19 to meet Metz. She's been over to Chelsea a couple of days. In the evening Bill, Metz, and I went down to the bowling tournament. Father and Mr. H. are ahead so far. The boys were over this morning. December Fri 4 A little warmer. I got up and 'did' the halls & shook the rugs before I went to the dentist's. Metz came up at noon and I walked down to Brewster's with her on an errand. She stayed and visited until 4 oclock. I sewed some but my waist is 'coming on' slowly. Choir rehearsal in the even- ing. Mother went down to Alice B's on business & Bill went to a social at the Meth. Church given for the lady clerks of the town. December Sat 5 Went to the dentists again in the morning. Came home and sewed. Amos and I went for a walk in the afternoon, lovely but cold. I had to go to the dentists again at four. They are skating on the river - A.B. was up in the evening and we played cards. Lovely moonlight night but colder than anything we'e had so far. December Sun 6 Clear morning but cold good congregation. My vacation has just flown. The roads are hard and smooth and look like wheeling. The boys were over in the afternoon Mr. H. & I went for a walk be- fore church time. After meeting we had welch rabbit and Guy's people were over. Mr. Metzger spoke about Dr. Grenfell and his great work in Labrador. Got to bed in good season against the morrow. December Mon 7 Awoke to find eight inches of snow on the ground so had to have Dolly. Began late as we had to wait for the room to get warm, there was snow in the store. I helped Metz serve at their University Club dinner. Fine dinner turkey etc We went to a choir rehearsal afterwards & still after bowled a game. Guy, Mr. H., Dr. Rumrill Dr. Russlow, Mr. Sherbourn, Bill & I. It was cold and sleety going up. December Tues 8 Drove to school again. Cloudy and snowing a little when I started for school. We had a nice letter from Grace today. It rained some tho [thro] the day and when I got home. There's not much snow but its fair sleighing. Guess I'm going to have about the same size school as in the fall. Read awhile and went to bed at 9:30. Don't know when I've retired so early. December Wed 9 Snowed a little 'off & on'. Dolly seems to be my stand by. They are getting ready for Xmas and Bill is some tired all- ready. Choir rehearsal at the house in the evening. Wrote a long letter to Grace to - December Thur 10 Cold morning about 12° below, but clear. I walk- ed to school, didn't mind it a bit, it took me just an hour. Mr. Mann came up for me and we went home lively, I drove most of the way. We sewed, read and went to bed early, rather cold night. December Fri 11 Snowy again and I took my pony again. I let the pupils make 'cards' in the afternoon we had no recess and got out early. Still snowing when I went home. We had a choir rehearsal before the show. 'Granstark'. It was very good. We all enjoyed it. We went down to the dance afterward. It has grown warmer. December Sat 12 Cooked etc. The 'Bethany Girls' had a carnival and made $55. Everything looked very pretty. They are getting very busy at the store. Father bowled awhile in the afternoon and I stayed at the store. Had a nice letter from Petie she may go thro here next week. Worked on Xmas presents in the even- ing. December Sun 13 Still quite warm but clouding up and looks like snow again. Bill did go to church as her throat is on the bum. Mr. B & Copie were there, fine con- gregation and sermon. I did not stay to S.S. rather 'all-in' Mr. B walked up with me. We made corn balls after dinner. Guy's people were over. Father & I went to evening meet- ing, Bill's throat is on the bum. December Mon 14 Drove my Dolly. It rained and snowed off and on. I wrote a long letter to Aunt H. at noon. Brother- hood meeting in the evening. Father & Mr. H. bowled but didn't finish up as well as they be- gan the tournament. Bill, mother & I sewed. I am mak- ing some collars for Xmas. Just must be getting busy with my presents. Letter from R.C. he is coming up the 23d. December Tues 15 Rather hard travell- ing & was a few min- utes late. The girls are to be in a cantata at the village & were excused yesterday to attend the rehearsals. I got dressed and went down town to do errands when I got home. It has moderated a whole lot. Bill went to the store awhile. Grace came over & sewed with us. Mr. H. read aloud to us. December Wed 16 Some colder but nice. Got home in good season. Father, Mr. H, Grace & Guy went to the Minstrel show. We had a choir rehearsal first at the Parish House. Bill & I sewed awhile & retired early. Had a letter from Maurine with some Highgate films, she is as happy as a clam in high water she's been married eight weeks. December Thur 17 Very cold but a lovely morning. My hands were cold by the time I had put up my horse. It has clouded up again and looks like more snow. The rehearsals for the cantata are going finely. Began to cloud up toward night. Stayed home and sewed then we had a game of cards before retiring. I fixed bags of Xmas candy for my kids. December Fri 18 24 It snowed hard when I went up and kept it up all day. One of the Eastern Talk men fell on the ice at the mill & broke both bones of his leg. They brot him to the sanitorium. Choir rehearsal was called off as the stores were open & several are laid up with colds. We stayed home, sewed and played cards. December Sat 19 Beautiful day. Very busy at the store. Had a card from Pete saying she was going thro on the 3. I phoned her and she stopped off. We made calls the rest of the afternoon Mr. H and mother helped in the store so they let me off. We went down town in the evening did errands, then bowled. Lovely night. Bill is just sick with a cold. Her new suit has come. December Sun 20 Beautiful day. Bill stayed in bed in the morn- ing. The church was packed. Music went O.K. Bill and I each had a beauty bunch of violets to wear. Pete wore Bill's. Mr. H. took BP & me to ride in the afternoon Lovely ride up by the Sanford farm and home thro the Center, fine sleighing. Bill feels some better. Father & I went to evening meeting. December Mon 21 I went down to see Pete off. came home & cooked then went to the store. Didn't have to go back in the evening but stayed home and sewed. Grace was over and we played a game before retiring. Mr. H. read aloud 'Pigs is Pigs', perfectly killing. Busy all day at the store. December Tues 22 Cold day real Xmas weather. I started reading 'The Brase [Brass] Bowl' after I got to bed. Busy day at the store. Mr. H came down early & got ready to start for Natick. Xmas packages have begun to arrive. 9 to so busy Bill & I do not go home to half our meals. The house looks like 'Sam Hill'. We picnic off the kitchen shelf and only sleep at home. December Wed 23 Another cold day. of course awfully busy. Mrs. Vinton was down. Mary isn't coming home, the Co. Arthur is with have been burned out & are moving. Mr. H went on the 10:17. R.C. is in town. Was writing letters on our type writer all morn- ing. Louise and Harry were in the store Louise is looking fine. R.C. walked up with me. Cold night. I read in my book after I got to bed very interesting - December Thur 24 Fine day but cold. Very busy. Mr. & Mrs Walker were coming in the store last evening. Walt Woodward is coming home in Feb. & Carrie & he are to be married here. Bill & I went to the cantata in the evening at the Music Hall. It was fine. Grace took the boys. They were delighted. John C. is in town. Many people are home for the holidays. Finish- ed my book when I got home. December Fri 25 Snowy all day & much warmer. Father and Bill went to the store in the morning. Mother & I cleaned the house and fixed the tree. Slews of things. We had dinner at Guy's then came over for the tree. The boys were wild, just danced up & down. We called at Metzger's, Aunt Hanna's, Clara's, Brooks', Mortons', Walshes', Wedg- woods etc. Catherine's two sisters Elizabeth & Nettie are here. December Sat 26 Still cloudy & snowy but warmer. Did much needed house work all morning. We had lots of presents Father gave Bill & me lovely gold watches, I had a doz. linen hand- kerchiefs, alike, 5 different lovely ones, 2 collar bows, one little velvet tie with tassels, a silk crêpe scarf, big box of Bailey's ooze leather covered diary, Eugene Field's poems, silk work bag, lovely light blue silk suit case cover, pair gold pins, safty [safety] pin case, slews of post cards, jewel & money case to wear around the neck, etc. Father, mother & the rest had the usual amount of things & the boys just slews of toys. I bumed around with Louise in the afternoon & Mary Mason took Bill & me driving in the evening December Sun 27 Lovely day, fine congregation. Mildred Peck took dinner and spent the rest of the day with us. I took the boys to walk. Father and I went to meet- ing. Alice and Helen called in the afternoon. Helen was out sleighing with J.C. yester- day also went to 'The Devil' with him. The show wasn't much good we didn't miss much. Went to bed at ten for the first time in ages. Twelve is getting to be our stylish hour & I look like a 'last rose'. December Mon 28 Lovely morning and I drove up to school as usual. Bill is still feeling rather bum but some better. We all went down to hear Col. Chandler on 'Lincoln and the Civil war' in the evening. It was very interesting the house was filled. Bill is buried in the 'Brass Bowl'. The kids thot my new watch just great. Wrote to Pete, Mary H, Margaret, Maurine and Grandma Smith. December Tues 29 Somewhat colder, but nice. School as usual I'm feeling rather 'in' but manage to survive. Bill and I were invited over to spend the evening with Mildred and Hazel T. we had lots of fun putting 'jig-saw' puzzle together. Mary M. M. was there too, Had a dandy new kind of candy called sea-foam. Letters from Petie, and Margaret today. December Wed 30 Stormy day, school went well got home in good season. Stormy night we played cards all the even- ing. Mr. H. came. Petie can't come down for the Ball but will try to stop later. We had lots of fine playing 'bid whist'. Father and I trimed [trimmed] them. Bill and Guy have a 'jig saw puzzle craze they are jigging it most of the time. Its quite fastinating [fascinating] December Thur 31 Last day of 1908. The year certainly has flown. Last day of school for this year got home in good season. Bill didn't feel able to go to 'the ball'. Clarance Webb, Mildred, Grace, Guy, Mr. H & I went we had a fine time. Got in at 3:30 A:M. Welby McCollom, Elton Fish, and other old friends were there. Beautiful starry night.
