Altho I only slept three hours last night or rather this morning, felt fine all day. Cooked in the morning and at one oclock, thirty three start- ed on a snowshoe run to Lake Mafeba. We had a per- fectly fine time pranced over the hills and dales ate lunch in the cottage, then eight of us walked home over Reservoir Hill. It was glorious. Retired early. 1909 January Sat 2 Another lovely day, warm and fine. I just hustled all the morn- ing and Petie and Leslie came on the 1:25. We bowled all the after noon. Grace, Guy, Mr. Hollis, Leslie, Petie and I. In the evening they were all here and we sang, danced, did jig-saw puzzles and had a gay time. Petie finished the Brass Bowl at 1:30 A:M. We slept till 2 - talked till 5:15 and arose at 8:30. First real visit we had. 1909 January Sun 3 Very warm but cloudy. All excepting Bill went to church. Splendid sermon about the unheralded heros & hero- ines we entertain unawares Mr. H took Bill, Pete and me to ride in the afternoon, we had a dandy pair and I drove, it was great. We got home just in time to see Leslie off on the five. Bill is better. May Thayer's little boy died in the night last night, he has been ill some time with sugar diabetes. 1909 January Mon 4 We're having a regular January thaw. Pete and I drove up to school. I was delighted to have her see my school. She started back at 11:30 with Dolly and Mr. Mann brought me home. It seemed rather lonely after Hortense had gone and I am just coming down with a horrid cold and that with the reaction of my dissipation made me blue. Miss Smith has been here sew- ing since Saturday. 1909 January Tues 5 It was raining guns when we woke up and I guess it had been most of the night. I had a stable team take me up and bring me home. May's little boy was buried today also Eugene Segar's body was brought here, he died very suddenly with penumonia. I expect Hortense and Sidney are at the theater in Boston tonight. Sewed and wrote awhile and retired early. 1909 January Wed 6 Was quite warm when I drove up but grew cold rapidly was quite raw when I came home. I made a jelly roll cake be- fore supper. Found Rob here when I got home, he went to Hanover on the evening train. I went down to say goodby to Metz right after supper she leaves tomorrow morning for Boston where she has a position I do hate to have her go. Had a letter from Pa W. Sun. he isn't well. 1909 January Thur 7 I wrote a long letter to Mr. Wettje last night, he's been in bed six weeks. Coldest day yet I nearly froze my hands going up to school and it was bad enough coming home. I wasn't dressed warm enough. The children are having great times sliding its fine. We read and made puzzles until late. Had a letter from Marge say- ing that Mary is in bed, her knee is no better and she cannot go back to Wheaton. 1909 January Fri 8 Still very cold but I dressed accordingly and was very comfortable. I went out with the children at noon it is just great. Twelve below this morning but a clear and beautiful day, we are having lovely moonlight nights too. Bill went to East Gran- ville on the three today, Mrs. Vinton has a party tonight. Bill has a new silk waist to go with her suit and looks quite sporty. Choir rehearsal then whist. 1909 January Sat 9 Mother has a wretched cold and didn't come down stairs until about ten. I made a cake, two kinds of cookies, desert for two days, dusted all thro and ironed a little. Mother did not go to the club. I went down town in the afternoon did errands. Bill came down on the 10:17 which arrived at three oclock, bridge burned, Saw A.B. a few minutes. Cloudy and looks like snow. We played bid whist in the evening. 1909 January Sun 10 We all went to church excepting mother, she has a very bad cold. Fine congregation and sermon. 117 at S.S. Mr. H. took Bill, Alice Mc and me to ride in the afternoon. We called on Mrs. Rand at West Brookfield came home over the hills. Church in the evening. Am reading an interesting but silly story McCutcheon's last 'The Man from Broyden's [Brodney's]. It snowed some in the afternoon but we had a fine ride. Stella W__ has a boy, John Alfred, born at the sanitorium this morning 1909 January Mon 11 Cloudy and warm but grew colder toward night. A regular Jonah Day I guess we read too late last night. The 'men folks' went to the Brother- hood. Mr. Morton telephoned me to go over there and play cards Mr. Morton and Grace trimed Mrs. M and me. Mr. M. had a letter from Prof. Merril. I wrote a long letter from Metz today had a card from her the other day. 1909 January Tues 12 It was a cold, raw ride to and from the Center and snowed guns all day. We had a very inter- esting teacher's meeting, one fine speaker from Boston, also Mr. Lewis, Ham, Angell, Metzger & Miss Briggs. I took Miss Farrand up with me. We had dinner at the church. Got home at five, felt bum all day. We played cards awhile and then I finished my book. 1909 January Wed 13 Clear, cold morning 23° below zero. We had a fine day at school but it stayed cold all day. I wrote a long letter to Grace at noon. Gail and I went over to Mason's and played cards awhile after sup- per. Yesterday before school I made some wine jelly and tonight took it over to the sanitorium for Stella Mitchell and Mr. Martin. Not as cold as this morning. 1909 January Thur 14 Somewhat warmer and snowed a little all day we have enough snow now surely. I made some butter-scotch and we played cards all evening. Another nice day at school the children are working finely these days, I guess the cold weather is stimulating to the brain. Gail has put her trip to Boston off for two or three weeks, Mother has to go to the sanitorium for a slight operation next week and Bill will have to be home. 1909 January Fri 15 Much warmer this morn- ing but grew decidedly colder toward night. Mr. Lewis the superintendent spent most of the morning at my school, everything moved smoothly and he seemed pleased with things. We went to an early choir rehearsal. which didn't amount to much then played cards. Very cold night and no trip to Peth to- morrow hooray! 1909 January Sat 16 Razzel dazzeled in the morning, cooking dusting etc as usual. Nice day but awfully cold. I went down town in the afternoon did errands went to the library then came home and read. We all read in the evening and I played the piano and went to bed early, for us. 1909 January Sun 17 When we awoke it was snowing guns and had been most of the night. We all rode to church, the paths weren't plowed. Small atten- dance. It snowed all day very hard a regular old time storm. Guy's folks were over in the afternoon and we 'sugared off'. There must be more than two feet of snow. Robert C. was up in the even- ing. 1909 January Mon 18 After midnight the wind blew a gale and the drifts are awful. I don't think I can remember so bad a storm. I had to tele- phone my 'kiddies' that there would be no school. The wind still blows don't know what the prospect will be to- morrow. Sara, Gail, Mr. H, Rob and I bowled in the afternoon, Rob was up in the evening until his train went at 9:30. Grace and Guy were over and we played cards. Mother went to the sanitorium. 1909 January Tues 19 Cold, colder, coldest reports of from 20° to 30° below every- where. I dressed warm and started out the road wasn't broken out beyond Hutchinson's. I put my team up there & Mr. H. broke out the road with a pair and took us up to school some of the drifts are awful. The roller went thro about noon so I had no trouble getting home. Mother had operation and is getting along alright altho very sick from the ether. We played cards. It has moderated somewhat. 1909 January Wed 20 Not as cold as yester- day snowed a little as tho we needed more! The A class had a written les- son in Geography today. They are doing very good work. The S.S. Club had a run, 23 of us went up over the park, rather heavy walking but we had a good time. Played a game of Cribbage when I got home. Mother is getting along fine- ly. I made some wine jelly to take to mother. 1909 January Thur 21 Much warmer the snow shrunk quite a bit. School goes well. Dressed and went over to see mother and to take the jelly. Father, Gail, Mr. H. & I were invited over to Guy's for a 6:30 dinner, we had a fine dinner then came over here and played cards. Cribbage is a great game I think I'll like it if I ever get good at it. Bed in fair season for us the hours we keep are demoralizing. 1909 January Fri 22 Started earlier than usual as its so very soft. The children built forts and had great old battles. Took longer than usual to come home. We went to choir rehearsal, then Gail & I went to an R.H.S. dance with Sara, only stayed a little while the music was bum. Bill is reading The Man from Broydney's don't know what time she went to bed. The walking is terrible! Mrs. Cheney stopped over a train en route for the Jet. saw her a few minutes at the train. 1909 January Sat 23 Rained some yesterday and is raining tonight. I just hustled until 2 P:M. Made cookies, cake, deserts did dishes, dusted all thro made beds etc. Bill appeared at 11:30 A:M, she finished her book in bed. I went around to see Mother after dinner, also called on Stella M. Then went down to the lib. and did errands. Mr. H. & I played cribbage. We sang in the evening till father and Guy came & now they're playing cards. 1909 January Sun 24 Another stormy Sun- day but not like last. We all went to church. Guy went with Mr. H. I came home early from S.S. to start dinner. Invited Grace, Guy and Mr. H to dinner we had a fine dinner if I do say it. Grace & little Rob went to Burling- ton Fri. and came back on the 1:25 today. Grace and Guy went over to see mother, then father and Mr. H, stormy night, we didn't go to meet- ing. I had a headache all afternoon. 1909 January Mon 25 It snowed a little all day a dry heavy snow. Wrote a long letter to Maurine at noon. Still storming when I drove home. Have been learn- ing to play cribbage, its a great game. The men went to the Brotherhood meeting. Gail sewed and I played the piano most of the evening, then went to bed early. Still stormy. 1909 January Tues 26 Rough day and colder. What light snow there was was badly drifted when I drove home. There isn't enough to block the roads however. Very windy I drove up to see Mother and stayed an hour. They closed the store, Guy and Grace came over and we played cards. Had a fire in the grate and pop-corn. Wrote a letter to Margaret. 1909 January Wed 27 Lovely, clear morning but cold. It seems good to see the sunshine once more. We had almost forgotten how it seemed. It clouded up and was snowy when I got home. Bill came home from the store sick with one of her 'spells'. She was disap- pointed because she wanted to go on the run. There were only about twelve went we went down by Uncle Irwin's and up thro by the Sanitorium. 1909 January Thur 28 We've had some cold mornings. The children are working well. Got dressed and went around to the sanitorium and down town, Got some books at the library, called on Mr. Lewis and Nell a few minutes in the even- Cold night. We played cards awhile then went to bed. 1909 January Fri 29 It was cold when I went up but moderated. I start- ed reading 'Little Lord Fauntleroy' to the children. They like it very much. We made 'cards' in the afternoon for the last time. We went to choir re- hearsal in the evening, cold night. 1909 January Sat 30 Stormy day. We just rushed getting ready for the University Club. Gail stayed home in the morning. I made a big sponge cake, baked beans and brown bread cracked butternuts. Horrible stormy day Bill went over to the sanitorium and down town. We played cards in the evening. 1909 January Sun 31 Lovely sunny day and everyone was out, Grace came over in the afternoon. Guy, father and I went over to see mother. Then in the afternoon we set the table and I made my desert. Gail and father went to church. I was all in Grace and Guy stayed over until they came home. We put a puzzle to- gether. Went to bed in good season. 1909 February Mon 1 Nice day. We got along without any recess and with a short noon hour so I got home in good season. Found the girls getting along fine. The table looked lovely. Mrs. Noble came to wash dishes, Helen helped me sewe. Guy's guests were father, Mr. H., John T. and Rob Mc, 16 in all. Everything was fine and we had lots of complements on the dinner Mr. Morril had the paper. 1909 February Tues 2 Our menu last night - Soup-cretons, creamed oysters, olives, celery, - roast beef, braised potatoes, string beans - orange tea, wafers - roast chicken, peas, mashed potatoe, jelly, salted nuts, - wine jelly dessert with cream and marascinos, sponge cake - coffee - pineapple cheese and crackers. We went to the show in the evening 'The Thief', Rob was up we went to the dance afterward R__ had to run to catch the night train. 1909 February Wed 3 Cold morning, About three oclock my voice gave out entirely and I could hardly speak aloud when I got home. I lay down a little while before I dressed to go to the Roll Call. We had a fine chicken pie supper and splendid time. Mr. H. had a fire in the fireplace when we got home. Bill & I chased around here and raised 'Cain'. Grampa H__ died at 4 this morning, father & I had to go over. 1909 February Thur 4 Cold morning 20° below Last day of regular work. I gave the A class their last written lesson in Geography. Tried to read to them some but my throat was too bad. Found Bill hustling when I got home. She had changed her plans and decided to go on the 10:17 tomorrow. We played cards awhile then went to bed in good season. 1909 February Fri 5 Father had to have the team so Mary M. took me up to school. We had some recitations in the morning, packed the books in the cupboard and then I swept and dusted. Wed played games and had a peanut hunt and I think the children had a good time. Mary came for me at quater of three. My head ached and I could hardly speak aloud. Made a cake for Mrs. Hollis when I got home, she came on the 3 with her sister & the children. Father brought mother home at 5 oclock. Bill went to B__ on the 10:17. 1909 February Sat 6 I just hustled all day. Mother came down to dinner. Went down town and did some errands late in the afternoon. Stayed at the store awhile and sold valentines. Amos spent the evening with me, we play- ed cribbage. I beat all but one game. Bill went to a dance last night I expect my throat is better but my voice hasn't come back yet. 1909 February Sun 7 Perfectly beautiful day I went to church and sat in the congregation as I cannot sing. Did not stay to S.S. as had to come home and look after dinner and mother. Mr. B. walked up with me. Wrote letters in the afternoon. Mr. H. took his family to ride then took us awhile. Don't think it hurt mother. We cut evening meeting Grace & Guy and Mr. & Mrs. H. were here. Letter from Bill, she's having a fine time. 1909 February Mon 8 Hustled all the morn- ing, cooked and so forth, cut my finger terribly almost to the bone, cutting open a hard lemon with a sharp knife. Went down bowling with the Hollises in the afternoon. Brotherhood in the evening. I went down to the library and visited with Allie until 8:30. Had hot rolls for supper, took some over to Grace as she had Mrs. Holmes & Mrs. Godding to tea. 1909 February Tues 9 Rather a cold day. I sewed on a waist I be- gan last november. Mrs Brooks was over in the after- noon. I went down town and did some errands. Then down again later and walked up with Allie. The girls, Alice, Jennie & Miss Far- rand were here in the even- ing Mary M. is sick with a hard cold. I made some dandy maple candy with cocoanut. 1909 February Wed 10 Kind of a sleety, rainy day. Mother had a regular reception yesterday. I finish- ed my waist in the morn- ing and we went down bowling in the afternoon. Mr. & Mrs. H, Grace and I. I only bowled 88 - Mon. I bowled 132. Played cards at the Hollises in the evening. Colder again. 1909 February Thur 11 Cloudy day. Did the usual work cooked etc. Mother is getting on finely. I went to the store all after- noon. The Gentleman's night of the Literary Club is tonight. Grace and Guy, Mr. & Mrs. H. have gone on Mother's invitations. I wrote to Bill also mother & we had a long letter from Grace. She is full of plans for their visit. Read and went to bed early. 1909 February Fri 12 They had a fine time last night the Parish House was decorated with valentines, had a turkey dinner and a good speaker. Lovely day cooked, sewed etc. in the morning and went to the store to sell valentines all after- noon. Alice Mc, Miss Farrand & I went to the cadet concert and the dance afterward. Had a fine time at the dance, enough boys to go around. A Mr. Whitehouse came home with me very pleasant & six feet four! Abraham Lincoln was born 100 yrs. ago today. 1909 February Sat 13 Cooked all morning and playe was at the store the rest of the day. Very warm and sunny, seems like spring. Showers by spells, a kind of an April day. Got in at 1:30 last night so a little weary in the knees but otherwise O.K. Played cards a little while in the evening and went to bed early. Grew colder toward night. 1909 February Sun 14 Cloudy and icy but not awfully cold. The sermon was on the religion of Pres. Lincoln and the influence of his life. I hurried home from S.S. as we had Uncle Jasper's people to dinner. Had a fine dinner and played and sang all the afternoon. Guy's folks were here too. Father and I went to even- ing meeting I sang a solo some- what scared but lived thro it. Found Mr. & Mrs. Hollis here when we got home. 1909 February Mon 15 Stormy horrible day. The queerest storm mealy and slippery. I dusted, wrote letters and cooked in the morning and went down town in the afternoon. Went to the library and did several errands. Guy went to the University Club. I played the piano and we went to bed in good season. 1909 February Tues 16 Still stormy. Half rain half snow, like little pebbles and no pack to it. There were three engines off the track this morning and traffic was tied up until into the afternoon. They had to use a field plow first on the walks. Mr. & Mrs. Metzger, Mr & Mrs. Hollis, father & I bowled in the afternoon. Mr. & Mrs. H were over in the evening & played cards with the folks I played the piano. Cooked and swept the guest room in the morning. 1909 February Wed 17 Cleared off and was sunny at noon. I cook- ed etc. Went down town in the afternoon to the library and over to Nell's had a nice visit with Nell. The walking is like walking in a sugar barrel. I never saw anything like it. Went around to the sanitorium on an errand, stopped in at Grace's a few minutes Played the piano and went to bed in good sea- son. 1909 February Thur 18 Lovely sunshiney day. Mother has rehung my blue sun plaited skirt and it was a task. I pressed every crease in the bloom- ing thing and it took me three hours, but it looks like new. Went down town and to the library. Came home with father. We all went to the Brotherhood, Ladie's Night Banquet. The supper was fine. The lecture following by Dr. Fox of Chicago on 'Characters we Have all Met' splendid. They had a good house. 1909 February Fri 19 Cloudy and some- what stormy again. Cooked and swept my room. Allie Mc was here about an hour this morn- ing. Miss Smith came to sew for mother. Mrs. Brooks came over in the afternoon and I went down town with her to the lib. Choir rehearsal in the evening Mr. & Mrs. Brooks were over and played 500 with mother and Miss Smith. Having some more half rain. 1909 February Sat 20 Still cloudy and rained hard in the night but is growing colder. Made a cake for the food sale and did various other things. Very wet walking. Grace and I went to the book club at Mrs. Ham's. Miss S is still here so Mother wanted to sew with her. Grace and I play bid whist at the H's in the evening. Mrs. H. & I trimmed them after they were 22 ahead of us. Colder to- night. 1909 February Sun 21 Perfectly beautiful day just like spring. The church was filled. Mr. & Mrs Hollis took father, mother and me up to E. Granville and thro the talc mill. It is very interesting and we en- joyed it. It was a beautiful ride too. Father & I went to church. I wrote letters afterward and went down with them and met Miss Smith who came down on the evening train. Am reading a dandy book 'The Barrier' by Rex Beach. 1909 February Mon 22 Washington's birthday and such a beautiful springlike day! The hills have been black with people coasting all day. I swept and cleaned the sitting room and cooked some. I was dead at noon but went coasting in the afternoon over on Chandler's. The snowshoe club coasted in- stead of going on a run. I stayed over at Guy's all the evening and finished my book, as they went over to the Hollis' to play cards and the maid wanted to go out. 1909 February Tues 23 Clouding up again. I walked over to Allie's on the crust and we slid a couple of times. Came home and cleaned the halls and stairs. Mrs. Brooks and Mrs. Brigham were here in the afternoon I went down town. Miss Smith has gone down to Clara's she made a very pretty black net waist for mother. Club met at Jennie's we had a good time. Bill is having a great time and will be home Thur. night. 1909 February Wed 24 Woke to find it raining and it kept it up all day. Did the usual work and sewed a little. Mother went to a whist party at Mrs. Brooks, the ladies had to fairly wade. I wrote two trip letters and fourteen pages to Metz. Then I paddled down town and came home with father. It is growing colder. Mr. & Mrs. H. were over and we played cards. 1909 February Thur 25 Grace, Guy and the boys started for Burlington on the morning train - for Leslie's wedding and the prelimin ary parties and dinners. Mopped the kitchen, cleaned the sitting room closet and the wood shed. Mother swept her room. She had callers in the afternoon. Caroline Draper was here. I went to a missionary meeting to help sing. Did some errands for mother and met Bill. She is looking fine and had a great time. We helped mother pack in the evening. 1909 February Fri 26 Everyone said the show 'The Wolf' last night was very good. Perfectly beautiful day. Father and mother were off for Washington on the 10:17, the house seems quiet. I took a nap after dinner and then went down town. Bill and I went over and played cards awhile with Jim and Mary and then with Mr. & Mrs. H. I am running the furnice. Father knows I'll let it go out, but I won't. 1909 February Sat 27 Still nice but not as clear as yesterday. I made bread, buns and pudding and read awhile after dinner in 'The Wood Carver of 'Lympus' its very interesting. Went down town about 3:30 as John tele- phoned that he wanted me to go sliding. I hustled around and got a substitute for Allie and we with John and Mr. Sherbourne had some great slides Willis went with us too. Went down town came back & read awhile then went down and met Bill, lovely night. Leslie & Edith were married at 10 A.M. 1909 February Sun 28 Nice day but little flurries of snow now and then. We went to church & S.S. then down to Uncle Jasper's for dinner. We had a fine dinner, played and sang awhile, the[n] Mary, John, Bill and I walked up around Chandler's. Slews of people sliding. Mary & Jim were here a few minutes after we got home. 1909 March Mon 1 Another perfectly beau- tiful day. Went down- town before dinner and looked at dress goods I'm going to start a dress as soon as I can decide what I want I took a nap after dinner then went over to return a book to Mrs. H. She asked me to call on Miss Moulton, the teacher with her, then we went over to see Grace and hear about the wedd- ing. Grace & the boys came on the 1:25. Card from mother the reached W at 3:45 Sat. went to the Hippodrome in N.Y. Frid. eve. 1909 March Tues 2 Bill has been reading 'The Barrier' and I've had hard work getting her to bed. Grace & Guy had a fine time in Burlington, there was a dinner at Dom's, another at a friends, a reception at the house etc. Beau- tiful presents & gowns. Robert & Leslie were pages. Made a corking angel cake for Mrs. Brooks party tonight. Beautiful moonlight night, Gail Mr. & Mrs. H., Guy Woodward & I went coasting. It was great and we had lots of fun. 1909 March Wed 3 Cooked some and sewed. I'm taking the dress Bill brot me in at the belt. Its a little blue bateest [batiste] with in- sertion. We went to an after- noon card party at Mrs. Brooks' and had a nice time. Bill & I went over and called on Mr. & Mrs. Harry Tilson after supper, then over to the H's & played cards. Warmer to day and not so clear. Tomorrow is the great day in Washing- ton, do hope they have good weather. 1909 March Thur 4 Snowed hard all day long. I just hustled until 3 oclock. Made bread and buns, an angels cake, Devil's Food, desert and did the regular work, was dead tired and lay down until 4. I went down town then and bought some checked gingham for a dress pink. Bill and I went down early and she jigged some puzzles be- fore choir rehearsal. She's mak- ing some new ones for Grace's party tomorrow night. 1909 March Fri 5 We hustled all day. Mrs. H. here both morning and afternoon helping us and Mr. H. ran errands. The party was a grand success 23 here, put puzzles together, played a city game, had refreshments - salmon patties with peas, sand- witches, sherbet, cake, olives, nuts, coffee. Then they played 'Jenkin' until 12. Bill, John, Rob, Mr. Sherbourne & I went to a dance awhile. I didn't have any heart for it tho for I had a letter from 'Pa Wettjie's brother telling me of his death at 11:45 P.M. Tuesday. 1909 March Sat 6 6 Terrible blizzard in Wash__ the 4th, Inauguration held in the Senate chamber, trains stalled and traffic all tied up. Beautiful day, I've dusted all thro again and gotten the house into order. Rob & I played a game of cribbage last night after the dance & 'twas 2 when we got to bed. Mrs. F. & Lucie New- comb came down to spend a day or two with Grace. Went snowshoe- all afternoon. Rob, John, Amos, Mr. Sher - Clarance Frink - Miss Moulton, Miss, Grey, Helen, Jessie & I we had a great time. Soaked and dead when we got home went to bed early. 1909 March Sun 7 Nice day again. Commun ion Sunday and Mr. Tewk came around and took us down. Lots out at church. Fine sermon. Rob went on the 1:25. Bill and I had dinner at the Hollises and then we went sleighing. It clouded up and snowed some by the time we got home. I went to C.E. and we both went to evening service; good number out. Still snow- ing, we went to bed early. 1909 March Mon 8 Beautiful day. I worked around and sewed a little and shrunk the goods for a new dress. We get cards from the folks every day or so, they are having a fine time. I went down town in the afternoon and down to see Nell. Gail and Grace went to a party at Mrs. Metzger's and I went to one at the Maude Johnson's in the evening. Brotherhood night. Lovely night. Bed at 12. We're living a gay and giddy life. 1909 March Tues 9 Nice morning but snowed all afternoon. I cooked and did house work until 3:30 then took a nap Had Grace & Guy, Mr. & Mrs. H. here for supper and we played cards in the even- ing. Grace and I were all the morning getting ready for her party. 14 ladies. We put puzzles together. had sherbet cake and wafers for refresh- ments people seemed to en- joy themselves. Wrote a letter to Marge after supper, took some eggs to Aunt Julia & to Mrs. H and played 3 games of cribbage with Mrs. H. Warm night went to bed early. 1909 March Thur 11 Actually cut my pink dress all but the sleeves. I'm not sure whether I have the moral courage to tackle an- other pair of tucked sleeves or not. Sewed awhile after dinner then went down town went to see Nell, she showed me some fine pictures of Frank's boys Stanley & Carlton. Choir rehearsal here. We're having lovely days. and it seems springy because of the long twilight. 1909 March Fri 12 Just two weeks ago since the folks went to Wash- ington and father wasn't going to stay a day over that time but they haven't mentioned com- ing home yet. Leslie spent the morning with me and was very nice. I sewed and took a short nap. At six 59 started for the center. It was a beautiful night & we just had a lark. Good supper, then shoed & danced. Home at 1 oclock. Beautiful moonlight night not very cold. 1909 March Sat 13 Meant to sew but got a thorough streak and did house work until about three oclock. Went down town. Did errands with Grace & Mrs. H then we played a game of cards before supper. Choir rehearsal. Dead tired and Bill was 'all in' we went to bed at nine Don't know when we've been so rash. Letters from Rob & Charles Soule today. C.S. has been sick all winter. 1909 March Sun 14 Cloudy when we woke but cleared off beautifully. Lots out at church, fine ser- mon. Just as we were coming home Mr. H. waylaid us and said we were to have dinner with them again so we haven't had to get a Sunday dinner yet. B & I walked in the afternoon, called at the Metzgers, Uncle J's and Hastings'. Evening meeting, bed in good season. 1909 March Mon 15 Another beautiful day The boys were out all morn ing coasting. I sewed un- til 3 oclock. Then just could not resist and went down- town. Deposited my last school check. Carrie Draper starts for Seattle Wednesday is to be married the 25th. I'm getting anxious to start my- self. Today is Hester's birthday she's two years old. Choir re- hearsal at the house. 1909 March Tues 16 Dusted then sewed. Another nice day by spells with snow flurries. I went down town right after dinner on an errand, then went over to Mrs. Morton's and tried on my dress and she helped me fit it, under the arms etc. Bill & I did puzzles and played cards with Mr. & Mrs. H until late. I made bread. Don't know what day this week the folks are com- ing. Fine long letter from Metz 1909 March Wed 17 Marchy day, wind snow and sunshine mixed. The boys were here all the morning and I hustled. Made bread, rolls, walnut cake, snow pudding, custard, Dusted the halls and stairs. Went down to see Carrie off on the 3 oclock. Then sewed with Mary M. Grace & Guy were in and played bid whist against Bill and me, we trimmed them. 1909 March Thur 18 Perfectly beautiful day. We were late getting up. Sewed most of the morning and afternoon except for a few minutes when I was down town. No word from the folks this week. The boys, Marion & Barbara Hollis and Stanhope Brigham have great times sliding these days. Bill and I took in Howe's Moving Pictures, they were very good. 1909 March Fri 19 Another beautiful day. Gail and I got up early and swept the parlors. Then I swept the dinning room, dusted around, made a pudding and hustled un- til 2 oclock. Mrs. H's birthday. Grace & I went down town & treated her then we came back and did puzzles and the children had a great time together. Father and mother came on the 5:19. They had a great time. Mr. & Mrs. Brooks, Mrs. Morton & Mrs. Brigham were in, in the evening. 1909 March Sat 20 Cooked and dusted and hustled until dinner time. Mother, Bill & I went to the club at Mrs. Morton's nice time. Mother stood the trip nicely. They stopped in N.Y and the Fergusons took them around. Bill and I & G went to a party at Mary Mason's in the evening. Twelve girls we did puzzles and then played cards etc. Had a find time, her refreshments were fine, ice-cream, cake, wafers, peanuts, punch 1909 March Sun 21 Beautiful day, lots out at church, splendid sermon. Gail, Grace & I took Robert & Elizabeth out. Its lovely but awful walking - We went down to Nell's etc. Wrote a letter and then we went to meeting. Mrs. Stimits had twins also Mrs. Hull. It seems to be the style. Grace took some clothes of Elizabeths down to Mrs. Hull. Its grow- ing cold. 1909 March Mon 22 7 Clear but awfully cold. Mother and I cooked then I dusted. We sewed until late and I went down town and did some errands. Father went to the Brotherhood. I read until late in 'Lewis Rand' by Mary Johnston. Its a very strong story and very fastinating but rather 'harrowing'. I've given up going west the southern way. Shall go to Boston and spend a few days with Metz & Mary. 1909 March Tues 23 The walking is awful. But the days are lovely. Sewed in the morning and went down town and did some errands in the after- noon. My dress is coming on finely. Mrs. Brooks and Mrs. Brigham were over in the evening and we did puzzles. I'm getting my ward robe in shape to go, have just lots to do yet. Miss Smith is coming to make me a pink silk gown. 1909 March Wed 24 Another beautiful day, just as warm and springy! Sewed and cooked in the morning. Mrs. Hollis was in with her sewing in the after- noon. I went down town late. Grace and Guy & Mr & Mrs. H were over in the evening. We did puzzles then had two tables of bid whist. Bill made some fudge. Had an urgent invi- tation from Margaret today to come and see her but cannot this time. 1909 March Thur 25 Sugar-snow storm with lots of wind. My dress is finished also several little odd jobs of mending. Letter from Grace today. Madam Brooks starts for Washington tomorrow with the senior class. Sara Chedel and a friend are going along with Jessie. I've finished my book, its great but oh dear! Grace and Elizabeth spent the afternoon here. Awful walking I went down town late. Bill and I went to bed early did a puzzle first. 1909 March Fri 26 Beautiful day but such awful walking, however its too nice to stay in. The boys spent the morning with us. I made Charlotte Russe and wrote letters. Did errands down town in the afternoon. Madam Brooks went to Wash- ington with the senior class. Bill and I went down to see them off on the 1:25. My pink dress is finished. Choir rehearsal here. Blanch has gone to Mass. on a visit. 1909 March Sat 27 Beautiful in the morn- ing but is raining now. Mother and I cooked all the morning. I went over to Allie's a few minutes. Mary is here with her child- ren. I took the boys down to Uncle Jasper's with me this afternoon. Winnie Badger has twin boys! I've answered seven letters in the last two days. We're having a very late spring, just slews of snow yet. 1909 March Sun 28 Perfectly lovely day but dread- ful walking. We drove to church. Not nearly so many out because of the awful walk- ing. No evening service. We didn't go out all day. I did two puzzles and started 'Peter'. Guy is sick with a hard cold and hasn't been out since Friday, Sap runs in some places but there's so much snow its hard getting into the sugar places. 1909 March Mon 29 Mother and I washed the sitting room curtains and the windows all around also washed and dyed my blue wash suit. Its rather blue. Went down town late and did errands Have decided on rose messihene [messaline] for my silk gown. Grace, Bill, father and I went to the en- tertainment in the evening. Toland, the Humorist and the Italian boys musicians, very good. 1909 March Tues 30 I went over to Grace's and started a lace yolk for my silk gown. Went to the dentist's at 1:15 and stayed until 3;30, went to Lora's to see about a hat am having a white one with a plume. Then a called on Maud Johnson. Sewed and read in the evening. R.C. cannot come up again before he finishes Apr. 21st. We had our piano tuned today. 1909 March Wed 31 Swept my room and sewed on my yolk. Desier Moulton was here a little while and I went down town with her. My yolke is coming on finely. Leslie has broncitis and a touch of croope (?). Mae Carter took tea with us. Bill & I spent the evening at the Hollis' and 'did' puzzles. Mary Mason keeps us supplied. 1909 April Thur 1 Another beautiful day The R.H.S party leaves Wash- ington today. Mother & I baked all the morning. I made three loaves of angel, two chocolate, two walnut and mother two marble and two gold. All for the Club Sat. We didn't get upstairs until four oclock and were nearly 'all in'. We all went over to Mrs. Brigham's to a party in the evening had lots of fun. Bed at 12. Little Dick Hollis is a year old today. 1909 April Fri 2 We just rushed getting cleaned ready for the club. Its to be Children's Day and they've all been here to rehearse. My rose silk has come for my dress & Miss S. will be here Mon. or Tues. I'm getting on well on my yolk only don't have any time these days. Mother and I frosted our cakes after the kids had gone. Choir rehearsal in the evening. We're having lovely days but lots of snow yet. 1909 April Sat 3 Cloudy in the morning but cleared off. Mary Mason came over and helped us freeze the orange ice. We had three gallons. Gail stayed home awhile. Everything went off well, the house looked fine. Rob & Leslie were here in their little wedding suits. I sang I've reached the end off my rope all in. Went down town on errands in the evening. Mary M. was here we did puzzles. My grey evening cape has come. I'm awfully pleased with it. 1909 April Sun 4 Another beautiful day. These are strenuous Sun- days with Blanch gone I have to take her class & Jessie is gone so I have the secretary work to do alone Mary M. came over with a puzzles of 405 pieces in the afternoon and we all worked some on it. Mother went over to see Mrs. Brooks and hear about Wash__. We went to meeting Father was called on an embalming case Lovely moonlight night. Mother & Bill finished the puzzle. 1909 April Mon 5 Beautiful days and fine sugar weather tho still so much snow. I was out doing errands all the morn- ing and in the afternoon mother and I took our work into Mrs. Brook's'. Mary M. was over a little while and Mrs. H. The boys are out a- gain and feeling better. We go to meeting every evening this week as its Passion Week. 1909 April Tues 6 Did regular work and cooking most of the morning and have worked on my yolk all the rest of the time with the exception of a few minutes when I was down town. The snow is going fast. It rained when we started for meeting very few out. Miss Smith is sick with a cold. 1909 April Wed 7 Grace was here with her sewing in the morning also the boys. I did lots of odd jobs, finished my yolk, wash- ed and ironed my grey silk waist and several little things. A ticket agent called on me also Desier M. and we played and sang until near- ly five then Mrs. H. came and we went down town. Meeting in the evening. It has rained some and the wind blows like 'Sam Hill' Grace Brooks 4th anniversary. 1909 April Thur 8 The wind was fright- ful all night. Did lots of damage. Pealed part of the tin roof off father's store and loosened the awning so that the iron brook [broke] one big plate window it all fell in and broke about $15 worth of china. Tore the roof off the Canning Factory, broke trees, windows and raised Cain generally. Miss Smith came. I went down town and did errands the[n] sewed all P.M. Mrs. Morten was in also Grace. Church again. 1909 April Fri 9 Still cold and snowed a little. Mother Grace & I went down to the millinary opening, I bought a black and white straw hat hustled home cooked and got dinner. Sewed after dinner. My silk dress is coming on O.K. Miss Smith doesn't feel well. Church again, good number out. Blanche is home. Choir rehearsal after meeting. 1909 April Sat 10 Nice day but still cold. We swept and cleaned the parlor and dinning & sitting rooms. Did some ironing and odd jobs. Mother has fixed over the neck of my graduating dress. Went down town late. We're having a very late spring. Not a very good sap year. Mary M. was over in the evening and we did a puzzle. 1909 April Sun 11 Easter Sunday and bright and nice but cold. Full house but not many summer hats out. Fine service and the music went off well. Father & mother dined at Guy's. Gail and I walked up the track without rubbers, then called on Stella Mitchell, her boy grows & is very good. I led C.E. Then we all went to even- ing service, stopped in at Mason's at [and] heard the grapha- phone a few minutes. Dead tired and 'all in.' 1909 April Mon 12 Made cup cakes, dusted sewed. I went down town after cream before breakfast and again on errands before dinner. Sewed in the afternoon Mrs. Brigham was in. Went down town late and Bill & I met Allie Mc. Dress is coming on. Bill, Grace & I went over to Mrs. Hollis' in the evening and helped her get ready for her party. Warm night 1909 April Tues 13 Didn't seem to accomplish much all day. Ticket agent was here from the Ch. and N.W. expect to leave Boston the 28th. Went down town late and help- ed Mrs Hollis at Grange hall. Having hard luck with my net yolk. Lewandos' didn't get my letter for 4 days. We had a fine time at the party 38 there. Father and Mother danced the Vir__ Reel. We played cards, did puzzles and danced. Had Ger- mans, in Serpentine and chicken favors to match for partners. 1909 April Wed 14 Rained when we came home last night - We got in at 1 A:M and had a fine time. It rained all night, and the river is awfully high I never saw the meadows so covered. The bridge below Man- chester's has gone out and washed out a place 75 ft. Wide. Two rail- road bridges near Roxbury have gone out, a freight train went down and two men were badly burned. Sewed and turned in early. Went down to see the river in the morning It has rained all day steadily. 1909 April Thur 15 Mother, Aunt Julia, Miss Smith, Gail and I walked over to the washout, quite a sight. The trains aren't running regular- ly yet. I took my sewing over to Mrs. H's and stayed with the chlidren while they went over to the washout. Then Mary Mason came over and we played 500. Bill went to see 'Yama' with Mrs. Brigham. I played the piano and turned in early. 1909 April Fri 16 Dusted and cleaned and sewed. A lovely day. Mother is making a dimity morn- ing sack for me and I am mak- ing a white waist. We went down town to the millener's and met mother's friend and cousin at the 3 oclock. Helen Tozer. How they have talked ever since! We all went to choir rehearsal, then played Ping-pong in the gymnasium. My lace hasn't come from Lewandos and I'm getting uneasy. 1909 April Sat 17 I do so much housework I don't get much time to sew. Bill and I went to see Mary Webb when she went thro on the 3 oclock, is looking fine. Jessie C. was here the rest of the afternoon and told me about her Washington trip. Aunt Julia was in also Anne. Bill and I played 500 with Mr. & Mrs. H. Warm and clear tonight 1909 April Sun 18 We all went to church of course. Helen Tozer took dinner and spent the day at Aunt Julia's. Father and mother were there for a chaf ing dish supper. Bill felt bum and went to bed soon after dinner. I wrote some letters. Robert C. came up at about 3:30 and stayed until 7:30 We went to church with father. Mary and John came up to see me after church. 1909 April Mon 19 Mother has a wretched cold. We hustled sew- ing all day. I went down- town and got my best hat. Its a 'bird'. Miss Tozer has been sewing for me too. The net for my dress hasn't come am afraid they'll have to finish it after I'll gone and send it. Cut a shirt waist today. Gail, father, Miss T & Aunt J. went to a sterroptican [stereopticon] lecture. Mother and I went to bed early, 'all in'. 1909 April Tues 20 Mother got up but had to go back to bed. She has a dreadful grippy cold and is just sick. Miss T. and Gail did all the down stairs work so that I could sew. Mother felt better toward night. I had slews of callers to say goodby. Finished the waist I started yesterday and Miss Smith has fitted a muslin linning to make the net sleeves & yolk by. Bill & I packed in the evening. Plenty of room after all. Steamer trunks hold more than one would think 1909 April Wed 21 Mother felt well enough to get up but is miserable. My train was a half hour late. Had a body guard to see me off. Mrs. Brooks, Mary M, Jessie, Mrs. Blanchard, Mr. Metzger, Mary L., Grace, Mrs. Hollis, Bill, and father. Awfully tired and pretty blue all the way down hated to leave mother sick. Metz & I missed each other at the north station and I came out here after telephoning. We 'turned in' early. Seemed so good to see Metz. 1909 April Thur 22 Got up and went in town with Metz. Called on Pansy Smith and did several errands. Went into Thresher's and visited with the girls there. It rained a little but stopped at noon. Went to Lewando's and they said my net had been sent. Metz, a friend of her's and myself went to lunch together. I went out to Aunt H's at 2:30 and stayed until 5. Got out here at Roslindale just as Metz did, found a postal from Bill. We rode out to West Somerville and back in the evening. Dead tired. I went to the C & N.W. office and made my ticket arrangements. 1909 April Fri 23 9 I stayed out until the mail came and wrote some letters got in town at about eleven and shopped until lunch time. M & I lunched together of course, then I took the 2 oclock train for Wellesley. It poured until about 5 oclock. Hortense showed me all around and in the evening we went to the finale rehearsal of the freshman play, it was fine. A lovely moonlight night and Wellesley is beautiful. Pete had some girls in her room after the play for 'cheese- dreams' and soft drinks. We had a lark, got to bed at 12M. 1909 April Sat 24 Went to chapel and one recitation with Pete then we came in town and shopped I bought a suit and lace waist and Petie bought a hat we met Metz and went to lunch then to see Marie Cahill in 'The Boys and Betty'. It was very cute and we enjoyed it. After that Pete took us to Hyler's for a 'fudge Sunday' then we all betook us to the south station and took our trains. Metz & I played the piano and wrote letters then went out and mailed them. Had another postal from Bill. It's been a lovely day and is a lovely moonlight night. 1909 April Sun 25 Metz and I went to church then played the piano until dinner time. Now we've been writing and are going out to call on Lucile and Aunt H. Its a nice day altho somewhat windy. Called on Aunt H and had a nice visit there. Then we went to the Wheeler's stayed to lunch and went down to see Lucile off and to meet John & May Lawson. We came home and went to bed in good season. Aunt H. gave me a birth- day presant of a lovely little silver pocket book on a long silver chain and filled with bright, new change. 1909 April Mon 26 Stayed home and hemed my suit. Didn't start in town early enough & had hard luck with cars so miss- ed lunching with John, Mary & Metz. Took my pink gown to a dressmaker Geogia Mann reco- mended and she tried it on and is going to put in the yolk and sleeves for me. Bought a silk petticoat at Thresher's, called on Pansy and got two checks cash- ed and did several last errands. Got twisted going home been a regular Jonah day. Metz, Mrs. Mc & I went to see 'The Servant in The House', strong play. Edith Wynne Math- eson leading lady Bed at 12. 1909 April Tues 27 I get one or two letters from home every day. Packed, pressed my grey skirt and then went in town met Metz and we went to lunch together. Metz went with me while I bought a silk kimona, slippers etc. Got tassles for my pink dress and got the dress, went out to Aunt H's and showed them my dress and said goodby to them, Got out to Roslindale at 5:30. John took Mary, Metz, Webby and me to see 'The Traveling Salesman' It was lots of fun. We had sodas and got home just as it begun to rain. Bed at 12 again. 1909 April Wed 28 Pour guns all night and until 9 this morning. Found letters from mother and Mrs. Mead when I got home last night. Hustled and packed the man came for my trunk before it was ready and I had to tote a suit case of things over to the station afterward. Got in to Boston at 11:30. Went up into Thresher's wrote a letter home. It cleared off beautifully. John Metz & I had lunch tgoether then they with Mary saw me off. The agent introduced me to a girl in our car whos alone too we go as far as Denver together. We played cards until the agent got off at Utica Slept pretty well rather cold it poured all night. Saw Marge at Springfield. 1909 April Thur 29 My birthday! Had a fine breakfast in the diner just as we were going thro Detroit. I saw Ben a few minutes at Ann Arbor, he's awfully nice wish I might see more of him. We went thro a regular blizzard early hail, thunder and lightning. Got into Chicago at 4 P:M. another girl whos alone & I bumed around sent postals got a manicure and had a dandy dinner in a cafe where there was a fine ochestra. We stayed there until 9:45 It just poured when we took the L to our train. 1909 April Fri 30 I slept in the upper over Miss Hoch as mine was next the door and I didn't like it. Finished my book, 'The Black Bag' and wrote letters. We're in roll- ing prairie land now. Had a good lunch. Got into Omaha at 3:30 and had a half hour wait changed cars. I sent a telegram on to Denver. The wind blows and its rather cold. The girl I was with in C__ went a different route from here but Miss H. and I are still in the same car. Had a fine berth and slept like a top. We had a good dinner and then played 500 with a couple chaps across the way. 1909 May Sat 1 Got up at 5:30 and the scenery was fine all the way into Denver. The mountains are covered with new snow. Its colder than usual here they say. We arrived on time 7:50 A:M. Mrs. Ellett met me and we've been to breakfast. Hope my trunk arrives soon. Mrs. E's sister took us out in her motor all around the city. Its awfully cold and windy but I enjoyed it so much. My trunk came before lunch and I had a bath. We put puzzles together in the evening. They're 'dippy' over them out here. 1909 May Sun 2 Right after breakfast, Mr. Paul took me with Mr. & Mrs. McDonnal down to their chemical works and showed me all around. I saw Robert Abbott and had quite a visit with him. Then we went around town & down to the post office got 2 more letters makes 7 since reaching here. Right after dinner both autos full we started out and went 38 miles it was grand. We went up thro Golden & Morrison rock formation like the garden of the Gods. I saw my first burros. Clear beautiful day and much warmer. We did puzzles in the evening & went to bed early. I wrote a letter & some cards. This is great country. I like it out here fine but am still a New Englander. 1909 May Mon 3 Mrs. Ellett and I went down- town to see about my reservation and looked around the stores some. Its almost hot. The streets are very wide and the buildings not as high. Real good stores. We went over to Mrs. E's mother's in the afternoon, played & sang etc. Rob Adams called at about 4 had a nice visit with him. Went to the Orpheum in a box party in the evening Mr. E brought us flowers to wear, I had a bunch of viol pansies. Good show We had supper at the Albany after ward. Home at 1. Lovely moon- light night. 1909 May Tues 4 Tennse [Tennessee?] Pass 10,240 ft above sea level the highest point reached by standard rail - Mr. E. saw me off at 8:A:M warm nice day. Great scenery all along we stopped 20 mins. at Pueblo & got out & got some cards. Grew hot to- ward noon, but clear and lovely. We went thro the Royal Gorge at about 2:30 Its beyond description. The snow capped range from there on was beautiful too. Toward evening it grew more beautiful. Shall never forget the ride thro the cannon [canyon] of the Grand river. Full moonlight on those snow capped peaks & its such a winding road. I sat up until I just had to go to bed. Got out at Glenwood Spring - 10 P:M. Lovely cool air just great. 1909 May Wed 5 I slept quite late, the valley grew wide surrounded by snowcapped ranges as we neared Salt Lake, rather warm on the train. Reached S.L.C at 1:50. I went right up to the office made my reser- vations wrote two letters & some cards. Took a sightseeing auto all around went thro the tabernacle. Some lovely homes & broad streets but peculiar city I had the feeling of being in a foreign land. Supper at a cafe. Lovely moon- light. read at the station, walked & talked with a Cornell man on our car. Train an hour late. Played cribbage with Cornell man then bed. 1909 May Thur 6 We were going thro the prarie when we woke up in the A:M. Desert I mean. It was almost un- bearable hot and dusty all day. I finished my book & played cribbage to kill time. Mile after mile of sage- brush, cactus, prairie dogs with now and then a switch station where there would be a couple of shacks. Sent a telegram to Mrs. Mead from Las Vagas. At about five we saw our first palm trees at a little village on the edge of the desert. Then we began coming thro the mountains into Cal. and it grew pretty at San Bernadino I saw my first orange trees, got out a minute. Reached Los A__ at 8:10 P:M. 1909 May Fri 7 Had kind of an experience find- ing the Meads I had made a mis- take in the no. in add. book & so they hadn't gotten telegram. Took a car wan- dered around a long while found the no. I had was a vacant lot, then dug for a letter & got right no. reached here at 9:45, tired & mad. Mr. M. went up to Tropico with me in the A:M to deposite my ticket. In the afternoon he got a pair and took us driving thro the lovely sts. and out thro Hollywood. Beautiful flowers, like fairyland and such fanciful bung- alows. In the evening we went out and called on the child's old friends of father's. Had a very pleasant call. Its warm in the middle of the day but grows cool toward night. 1909 May Sat 8 Haven't had real clear days since I've been here fogs that lift toward noon but it still stays smoky around the hills. Started for So. Pasadena at 9 and got out to the Baileys at about 9:45. They all had to look twice before they knew me. We visited awhile then Mr. Bailey got a team and took me all around So. P. & P. & back for lunch at 1. They saw me aboard my car for Mt. Loure at 2:10. That was a great trip up an incline, the electric road away up to Alpine Tavern 5500 ft. elevation. I climbed from there to the top of the Mt. 1150 ft. higher. Great views, saw 5 mountain goats. Came down on the 7 oclock car. Lights in the valley lovely. They threw a seach [search] light all around. Met a Teck man from Minn. very pleasant Took my picture on the mt. Found a letter & postal when I got back at 9:45 P:M. 1909 May Sun 9 10 Lovely day but still too hazy to see the highest mts. Mrs. M, Ellen & I went to hear Robert Burdette at the Auditorium. I wore my blue dress & no coat & my white hat. After dinner we all went down to Venice and Santa Monica, my first view of the Pacific. Lovely surf & it looks so pretty with the green water and the white sea gulls. We had supper at a hotel over looking the sea. I wrote in my diary and wrote two letters after getting home. Everything was in full swing at the beaches, dancing etc. It seemed odd to me right from staid old New England. 1909 May Mon 10 The sun came out earlier than it had at all before. I started for Catalina at 9:15. Mr. M went down to start me off. An hour's ride by electrics to San Pedro then the boat. My first ride on the Pacific It was glorious I enjoyed every minute. A girl from Penn. & I stayed together all day. I was hungry and we had a good dinner Then went out in the glass bottomed boat to see the 'sea gardens' Wonderful the water is so clear and one can see so many feet down. Facin- ating curio stores. I bought some pic- tures and a brass jewel case. Rough ride back but I liked it 38 mls. Mr. M. met me at 5:45. I wrote some postals and played the piano an hour then went to bed. My first evening 'at home' in Los. A. 1909 May Tues 11 We shopped in the morning. Its the first time I'd been in the stores. Packed my trunk after dinner, then went out to Tropico for my ticket, got back in town at 4 P:M. Took a car ride, then met Miss Child at the Indian Trading Co's store. Very interesting place. Went out to her home for dinner and spent the evening. They are old friends of father's. Had a very pleasant evening. Mr. McWain who used to clerk for father was there too. They saw me home Mr. McM and Miss child. Another letter today The folkes have a new horse. 'Roxy'. 1909 May Wed 12 'Piled out' early & hustled to take the eight oclock train for Santa Barbara. Mr. M. came down to see me off. They start east Fri. Here I am at the Potter where Maurine was so long. Arrived at 11:35 A:M. I've just walked around the grounds a little and watched the surf, too tired to 'sight-see' until morning. The girl I visited with on the Catalina trip came at 6:30. I met her at the station and she shared my room at the Potter. We had a fine dinner wrote letters and retired at 10. But we talked until late and I didn't sleep very well it was too warm. 1909 May Thur 13 Right after breakfast we got a carriage and drove around the town. Its not very clear, still the mixture of fog and cloud. We went all thro the old mission at Santa Barbara, climbed into the tower and got a fine view. We left at 11:40. It was a long ride to Del Monte we had to change at Castro- ville reached Del Monte at 9. We did- n't like our room very well at first. Wrote some letters and listened to some good music. Very elaborate hotel and seemed larger than the Potter I don't know whether it is or not. 1909 May Fri 14 We had our breakfast at 8 packed our suit cases ready to send to the station and started on the famous 17 mile auto trip along the coast. It certainly was one of the most enjoyable things I've done in southern california. Its beautiful shore line, very rugged and we saw lots of sea gulls etc. Our driver was very obliging, picked wild flowers & roses for us and gave us lots of information. We got some postals & when we reached the station found the train had been waiting 2 mins. for us. The S.P. controls the hotel & 17 mile drive. Miss Moble left me at Palo Alto. Mrs. Woods & Lottie met me at Frisco at 4 P:M. 1909 May Sat 15 We just visited last night and went to bed in good season my trunk came at about 6:30, It was rather cloudy when we had breakfast but soon got clearer. Maud took me down by the harbor and I had my first sight of 'the gate.' We had a fine ride along by the coast and I did enjoy it we walked thro the grounds of Mr. Sutro & got home just at lunch time. After lunch Mrs. W, Lottie, Maude & I went to China Town. We were all the afternoon there. I bought a few little things we had tea & chop suey. Mr. Woods came at 9:30 we visited & did puzzles went to bed in good season again. 1909 May Sun 16 Sunny this morning but still rather cool. We breakfasted at 9:30 played & sang until nearly 11. I phoned out to Cousin Rose's yesterday and am going out today. We visited, read and played the piano until lunch time. I went out to Cousin Rose's at 2:30 and stayed until 4:30. Had a very pleasant call. They want me to come out there soon. We've arranged that I shall go to Valley's from here then come back to Rose's and go from there to Seattle with the girls the 14th of June. I found three letters and two Herald's wait ing there for me. There were callers all the evening. Cousin Rose husband is nearly blind, she has two daughters both older than I. 1909 May Mon 17 Got up rather late and went shopping with Lottie. They have some beautiful stores here and fine big hotels. Its wonderful what they have done in the last three yrs. since the earthquake. After lunch Lottie and I went across the bay to Berkeley and around the University grounds. Its in a beautiful location. Lovely day a little warmer. We reached home just at dinner time. Mr W went back to the ranch this morning. We visited and went to bed in good season. 1909 May Tues 18 Stayed home and wrote letters all the forenoon and after lunch until about three. Dressed and went out for a walk and to mail my cards. Played the piano until dinner time. Called up Mrs. Washburn and am going to call on her to- morrow morning. Also called up Harry Mc Intyre and he said he'd be out this eve. but didn't show up. I read until late in Janice Meredith. Letter and postal from home today. Nice day but rather windy. 1909 May Wed 19 I called on Mrs. Washburn at the Jefferson this morning and had a fine visit with her. Came back and read until lunch time. After lunch Lottie took me out to Golden Gate Park. It is a beautiful place and we walk- ed around until nearly dinner time. Visited the Museum which was very interesting some beau- tiful pictures and minatures. I finished my book in the even- ing. Card from Mother they like the new horse. Harry Mc called had a very pleasant visit. 1909. May Thur 20 Played the piano after breakfast then played cards and did puzzles with the girls until lunch time. Wrote a few letters and went down on Filmore St. looking for pictures. Walked part of the way out to Cousin Rose's and made quite a call there. I got home at dinner time. We played cribbage and 'Bizekle' in the evening I taught the girls both games. 1909 May Fri 21 I had four lettes [letters] and four postals. Little Kathryn Ellett has pneunmonia is very ill. I wrote letters all the morn- ing. After lunch Lottie and I started out and walked thro the Presidio then rode out to the old mission and down town, picture hunting, we found some that we wanted. Cards again in the evening. Bed in good season. Its so cold one is uncomfortable in the house away from the fire place. 1909 May Sat 22 I packed and took me most of the morning. Lottie and I took a walk around by the Whittier place and down on Van Ness Ave. I wrote a letter after lunch then we started down town. I bought a lace waist for Bill and a parasol for myself. Lottie saw me off at the boat at 3:15. Roy met me at Valley's at 6 it was a lovely ride. I was awfully glad to see Mary and she seemed to be to see me. Roy's wife & I went down town in the evening. 1909 May Sun 23 Lovely day its much warmer here than at Frisco not so much cold wind. We just visited all the morning. In the afternoon we took a car ride out in the country to some picnic grounds Everything is in full swing here on Sunday base ball, dancing and everything. After dinner we played the piano and sang then I wrote a letter home. Mary has a pretty little bungalow of five rooms. Very convenient. 1909 May Mon 24 I didn't get up until nearly nine oclock. I don't know what made me sleep so late. We had an early lunch and just visited all the afternoon A friend of Margaret's came in awhile. They went to bed early but Mary and I sat up and read. I started 'Satan Sanderson'. Its been a beautiful day warm and summer like but I haven't been out of the house have had on my pink dress all day. New moon. 1909 May Tues 25 11 Another beautiful day. Rol- and and I started out for a walk right after breakfast. We went up on the Heights and down to the wharf. The surround- ing country is beautiful. Lovely rolling hills but they're getting brown now people have finished haying! Its a queer town transient population, sailors & navy people. Mrs. Lord (from Bethel) called in the afternoon. M & I went to a dance in the evening Roy was sick. We had a fine time home at 12. Lovely moonlight night. 1909 May Wed 26 Lovely morning I went to walk with Roland. Then helped Mary with my wash- ing. In the afternoon one of Mary's neighbor's called. I wrote some letters and read. After dinner Roy, Margaret & I went down to the doctor's and Roy had an electrical treatment on his leg which was caught between two cars and injured the nerve so that he has very little motion in his toes. Then we went to see some moving pictures & to bed early. 1909 May Thur 27 Roy-land took Margaret and me over to the Navy yard. I had never seen a dry dock before. Its very interesting They are building a huge new dock. We walked all around and got home just in time to dress to go to lunch at Mrs. Lords. M & I went down town from there late in the afternoon. After dinner I walked down with Mr & R on their way to lodge meeting. Then Mary & I visited until after 10:30. Its a very windy day and cooler. 1909 May Fri 28 I went down town with Margaret in the morning while she got linning & pattern for a new gown. Roy gave her the material a white gause with a blue stripe, for a birthday present. I ironed until lunch time and in the afternoon did various little odd sewing jobs and sew- ed a little for M. wrote a letter home and walked down town. Margaret's brother was here in the evening we put a puzzle to- gether. Margaret sewed she wants to wear the gown tomorrow night. 1909 May Sat 29 Margaret sewed all day as fast as she could. I made a desert and some cup cakes. I went down town in the after- noon and did some errands for M & M. Had a long letter from mother. In the evening we went to a Colonial dancing party given by a private class. Some forty children from three up. All in colonial costumes the prettiest thing of the kind I've ever seen. We danced from 11 till nearly twelve and all talked after we reached home until 12:45 A:M. 1909 May Sun 30 Warmest day yet. We had breakfast at ten. Then Bundy & I walked down to the wharves and watched the boats but it was too hot. We read and took naps in the afternoon, I wrote a couple of letters, had dinner at 6. The[n] Margaret, Roy and I went for a walk. We went over to the park and swung We went to bed in good season. 1909 May Mon 31 We got up at quarter of six and had breakfast. Then Bundy, Margaret and I took the seven oclock boat for Frisco. It was a beautiful ride we took the Ferry to Oakland and went to call on Mary Holman but she wasn't home. Had lunch and spent the afternoon at a Park where there was a large scotch picnic. Left for Frisco at 5:30 had dinner there and came back on the 8:30 boat most beautiful moon- light ride lights all along on the Islands. 1909 June Tues 1 I got up late and went down town and did some errands. After lunch I made some walnut cookies and some chocolate cake. Mrs. Thomas a Washington lady called with her little boy. There were eight young people in in the evening and we played 'Pit' and 'Bizekle'. had sherbet sang and played. It was twelve oclock when we got to bed. 1909 June Wed 2 I felt rather bum and didn't get up until nine oclock. Margaret washed my pink dress and several other things for me. After lunch M & M took naps and I read. Then we sat around and talked and didn't get dressed until 4 oclock. Margaret & I called on Mrs. Lord a few minutes then went down town and walked home with Roy. We read in the evening and went to be in good season. 1909 June Thur 3 I didn't sleep very well the wind blew so hard that things rattled. I ironed my pink dress and pressed my grey skirt. After lunch M & M took naps and then we called on Mrs. Thomas and went down town. M & R went to their lodge meetings and I wrote letters while Mary read. I have read two books since I've been here 'Satan Sanderson' & 'The Heart Line'. Cold windy night. 1909 June Fri 4 Quite a cool morning and lots of wind. I made cookies, frosted a cake and made a maccaroon pudding. Mrs. Lord and Kathryn came to lunch. After they were gone I walked down town and did some errands. Then read Jane Cable. Mary and I sat up quite late but Roy and Margaret turned in early Oh no Martin M's brother called and brought a young lady friend we played and sang. 1909 June Sat 5 Mary made a cake and I made cup cakes for tomorrow when we go up to Napa Soda Springs and take a picnic dinner. After lunch I stuffed eggs then read awhile. Roy worked over time and M & I walked down town late and went to the doctors with Roy. I've been here two weeks tonight. It doesn't seem possible. 1909 June Sun 6 We got up early took the electrics to Napa then drove seven miles to the Springs. Its a lovely quiet place way up in the hills and we had a fine time. Mary & I took our books and read after lunch while R & M. called on a friend at the hotel. It was beautiful I just enjoyed it. We drove around Napa. when we came down and took the seven oclock car home. I finished my book. 1909 June Mon 7 I was most of the morn- ing packing my trunk and then wrote a letter home. I had a postal from Bill. We went down town earley and did one or two errands on the way to the boat. I hated to leave Mary shes so homesick out here. It was very windy going over but I stayed out all the time. I went right out to cousin Rose's and got there just as they were finishing dinner We talked until 10:30 I found 2 letters a package & postal. 1909 June Tues 8 Mary and Roland phoned from the wharf and I went down and met them. Roland had business in the city. M and I went out on the cliff ride thro Sutro's grounds and drove around Golden Gate Park then met R. down town and went to lunch together. Then we went up to China town and rubbered around. I went down to the ferry with them walked back to China and bought a pin. We visited and went to bed in good season. 1909 June Wed 9 I wrote some letters sent a little pin to Jessie for a graduation gift and visited with Mr. K. until after lunch. Then Mr. K. and I walked down by the mission looked up Alice Smally's add. but she had gone. Then Mr. K went on an errand and I took a card down town saw Mrs. Washburn a minute at the 'Jefferson'. A friend of May's Miss Mc Cre called in the even- ing and Mr. K, May and I walk- ed home with her. It was rather foggy. 1909 June Thur 10 12 I got up in good season wrote a long letter home and went down to the Ferry to meet Mrs. Holman. We shopped all the morning and had lunch in a hotel. Then we took the ferry and went to Idora Park. We listened all the afternoon to a ladies Band which I enjoyed very much. We had a good visit and I took the 5 oclock boat home. May took me to a Starr King meeting at the Unitarian church in the evening Its a young people's club. The program was on Thomas B Aldrich, James W. Riley and Eugene Field. I enjoyed it so much. And met some very pleasant people. 1909 June Fri 11 I wrote some letters and visited. I was sitting in the kitchen when I heard a crying on the piazza and there was a dear little kitten. The cat had four and had kept them hidden about three weeks. I went down town at about eleven looked around and bought some rushings had lunch with Miss Hoch (a traveling acquaint- ance) at the Emporium walked up to the woods and called and got home at about 3. Belle came home laden with candy and flowers from her pupils. They were surprized to see the kittens. May, Mr. Goodritch, Miss McRee, Mr. Stord, & I went to see Ethel Barrymore in 'Lady Frederick'. I wore my pink dress and white hat. 1909 June Sat 12 We had such a good time last night. After the play we had a supper at the house and played and sang and joked until nearly 1. I washed in the morning and the girls were busy getting ready to set sail. I went out to call on Miss Allen one of the 'Starr King' girls. We had a mutual chrush she asked me out and I spent the afternoon then she rode in with me. She lives away out by the ocean. After dinner Belle and I went down on Haight street and did a few errands. We talked and planned and didn't get to bed very early. 1909 June Sun 13 Mr. and Mrs. Washburn call- ed to take me autoing at 10:30 and we went down to the beach out thro the Park and the Presidio They brought me back just in time to meet Roy and Margaret at 12:30 on Tilmore St. They took their nephew and niece over to Idora Park and I met them there at 4 oclock. In the meantime May and I went driving with Mr. Goodritch. We had to swallow our lunch any way for there were two callers at that time. I saw Roy and M off. got home had dinner and wrote a letter and Mr. G. took M & I to church. Mr. Stord was there and he walked home with us. Busy day. 1909 June Mon 14 Belle and I went down town bought our tickets and did one or two last errands. We all packed then until the man came for our trunks at 3:30. We dressed had dinner I wrote a letter then we set out. Harold (a cousin who lives with them) went with us. Belle had a little boy in charge to meet his father in Portland and his people all went over with us. We had to take the ferry to Oakland and our train from that side. We left on that side on time at 8:30. A Miss Austin whom the girls know had section near us. 1909 June Tues 15 We found we were run ning late when we woke. We slept well. We stood in line a long while before we could get any breakfast. Theres only one diner on and its a very long train. We sat on the observation most of the day by turns. It was beautiful winding around Mt. Shasta and everything thro this country is so green and beautiful. It rained some in the afternoon. We had to stand in line ages for dinner. They put on another diner at Ashland. We made slow time up grade the rails were so slippery. We played cards in the evening and visited. After the rest turned in I went back to the desk in the observation and wrote 2 letters & 6 postals. 1909 June Wed 16 We were on hour and a half late into Portland. The little boy's father and uncle met us and took us all up to their hotel for break- fast. It rained a little while we were there. We left at 10:30. On the train I met a traveling acquain- ta[n]ce. He visited with us quite a- while. Miss Austin left us at Tacoma. We reached Seattle at 4:30. Cousin Warren met us with the machine we picked up Clayton at 802 - 1st. We visited until quite late. Nellie had a nice dinner for us and we were hungry as we had had no lunch. 1909 June Thur 17 I was sick all night for the first time since leaving home. My stomach was tired I guess from so much dissipation and I ate too heartily. I didn't get up until noon. Our trunks came then. I wrote a letter sat around and took life easy. Only ate half a grape fruit and drank two glasses of milk all day. The girls got up late too. I picked the pansies be- fore dinner. After dinner I helped Clayton polish the nickle on the auto and then we went for a ride I never saw so many lights as they have here they certainly are flush with electricity. 1909 June Fri 18 The roses are perfectly lovely here, such huge perfect ones. We took a walk May, Belle & I over thro the cemetery, and Volunteer Park. It is warm and lovely and the view from the water tower in the park is fine. We sat around talked and read until dinner time. May & I went a couple blocks after some groceries. After dinner we went for a ride thro what they call the Interlaken Boulevard its perfectly lovely. We could see the lights from the fair grounds. We played and sang after we got home. The bunch likes music & makes a stab at it. Letter from Metz & postal from Helen T. 1909 June Sat 19 I fixed beans to bake and then went down town to call on Caroline D.W. She has a very pretty flat near the hospital. We had a good visit. I wrote a letter after we got home. At 3 oclock Clayton and C- Warren came home and we went to the fair. Nell didn't feel like going. The grounds are lovely and the buildings fine. We got home late for dinner had beans and brown bread and short- cake. Mr. & Mrs. Jacobson came with their car just as we were finishing Nell & Clay went in their car and we picked up Dr. Calhoun & his wife. We all went on a long ride to Renton Jc. 1909 June Sun 20 Last night after we got home we girls talked and fooled and nearly killed ourselves laughing. I showed them how to play chicken. Nell & I did it and hopped all over the house. May, Clayton and I went to church. After dinner 'we all' and the Jacobson's went for a long ride out to Edmund's Beach We sat around and read, wrote and talked in the evening. Had the dinner work to do after we got home as we got right up from the table. M, C, & I walked out to mail some letters after the others had retired and sat on the steps a long time, lovely night. 1909 June Mon 21 I got up in good season and wrote before breakfast. May and I walked out to the grocery store and I made "Mary Anns'. After lunch I wrote four letters and made a maccaroon pudding. A sham- poo lady was here in the morn- ing and did Nell's and Belle's hair. Clayton took May & me out in the auto car awhile. Then we did a puzzle. Belle & Nell mhade a call and we had callers until late. 1909 June Tues 22 I read awhile this morn- ing then made and frosted a cake. Nell had a new maid arrive at about 11 oclock. She looks well. The washer lady was here today too. After lunch we all went down town and 'rubbered', did a few errands etc. Got home at six. A filling came out of one of my front teeth on the way home. I watered the lawn awhile after dinner. Then we all went over to the Jacobson's. There were 16 people there we played cards, 'Up Jenkins' and danced Virg-reel. 1909 June Wed 23 We didn't get to bed until after 12 last night. It rain- ed a little 'off and on' toward morning. I had breakfast with Coz W__ and 'Fritz'. then ironed awhile. Mrs Barret, a friend of the girls called in the afternoon and an old fortune teller came along. We let her in and had lots of fun. Clayton hurt his wrist very badly when he cranked the machine. It is badly swollen and has pained him terribly all day. The Dr. wasn't sure whether a bone was broken or not. We went for a short ride then sat by the fire. I played the piano. 1909 June Thurs 24 Lovely day. We started for the fair at about ten oclock and stayed all day. We got home at about six. The fair is fine I liked the forestry building especially There are two fine bands too. We met Mrs. Barrett out there. We got to feeling silly in the afternoon and raised Cain. I swiped my indi- vidual creamer at lunch, the girls stumped me. Clay's hand is still very sore he went to see the Dr. again after dinner then we all went for a ride Clay, May & I in the runabout and the rest with a sweetheart of Coz W's in the big machine. Beautiful sunset & lovely night. One year ago tonight was the Seniors Ball Dartmouth! 1909 June Fri 25 Beautiful morning sunny and warm. Buz came. I played and read aloud to Nell and May. We all felt lazy all day and took naps in the afternoon, then two girls called. Coz W__, May, Fritz and I went for a ride. We went down the boulevard to Lake Washington and watched the fire works from the fair grounds. The lights on the water were beautiful. It began to rain hard before we got home and poured all night. May made molasses candy in the afternoon. 1909 June Sat 26 13 It was still raining when we got up and kept it up until about noon. We sewed and read aloud most of the day. Clayton took May and I down town before dinner and brought home Coz W. and a friend to dinner. Belle, Nellie, May and I went to see John Drew in 'Jack Straw' it was real fun. We got home at 11:30. I had a letter from mother telling me to get a wash suit. 1909 June Sun 27 It rained when we got up but stopped before we finish- ed breakfast. Coz W__ took me for quite a ride, we went down for the mail and over on Queen Ann Hill. May went to church. In the afternoon Coz. W. took a friend to the fair and the rest of us took a boat ride around Lake Washing- ton. It was lovely altho not clear enough to see the mountains. We read and sang and had a fire in the fireplace in the even 1909 June Mon 28 I've gotten back into my old habit of waking up early. I went down town this morning and bought material for a pink linen waist. The girls had shampoos. I started my waist and sewed until four oclock then we had baths and dressed leisurely. M, B & I walked over to the tower before dinner I got my first view of Mt. Ranier [Rainier]. We went for a fine long ride over to West S__ and called on some friends. It was a beautiful warm night 1909 June Tues 29 Perfectly lovely day. We went on a picnic with the Ladies of the 'Elks' on the shore of Lake W__. It was warm and sunny and we just enjoyed every minute The lunch was fine and the woods heavenly. May and I went for a row and it did seem good to feel the oars. We got home at 6:30. A friend of May's, Mr. Dailey of Frisco was here in the evening Clay took us for an auto ride and then we visited until late. 1909 June Wed 30 May and I went down town in the morning and I got some new 'stick ups' for my hat. Belle and Nell went down town and did errands. May made candy and I made a cake when we got home. Mr. Dailey was here for dinner. Then we all walked over to the tower and went down town to see a Frisco crowd off for Alaska. Then we went to the 'Palace of Sweets' and had lots of fun there and on the way home. 1909 July Thur 1 May, Belle and I spent the day at the fair. It was cherry day and we saw some huge ones. We went thro the Art Building and the Alaska and other very interesting ones. It was a lovely day. We heard a fine band concert I did enjoy it so. After dinner I walked over to the tower and it was beautiful beyond telling. The full moon over Mt. Ranier on one ride and the red and gold sunset over the Olympics and the sound on the other. May & I walked until nearly 10. 1909 July Fri 2 Another beautiful day. I got up and got breakfast, made coffee jelly, washed my pink gingham some collars etc. We were all invited out to lunch and we spent most of the afternoon. It was really the warmest walking home that its been at all. Walter and Caroline W__ called in the evening. The rest went for a ride but got back before they left. Then May, Clay and I walked down the boulevard and sat in the moonlight it was perfect. 1909 July Sat 3 We worked around all the morning. I ironed my pink dress some collars etc and made some cup cakes. Had a letter from mother and a card from Jule. After lunch I went over on Queen Ann Hill to find the Finlay's. Mary & the baby are east but I saw Jed's mother then went down town and had a long visit with Jed. After dinner we all went out to the fair and did the pay streak There was a bunch of some 20 or more Jabcobsons [Jacobsons], Rileys, Greens etc. 1909 July Sun 4 Another 4th of July and it doesn't seem more than five minutes ago since the last one! We got up and hustled around and put up a lunch. I stuffed eggs. We started down town at eleven and were out all day in a launch. We ate our lunch on shore and have just gotten home. (7:30). Its been a beautiful day. Everyone was seasick but the boat people, Clay and me. We stayed home and read in the evening and retired early. 1909 July Mon 5 It sprinkled a little while we were eating breakfast but stopped before we started for Snoqualme Falls at 9 oclock. Nell went with the Jacboson's [Jacobsons] in their car. It was the most beau- tiful ride right thro woods, huge cedar trees and ferns. We had dinner at North Bend at 2. Then went back to the falls. They are 267 ft. high and perfectly lovely. We started home at about five and reached home at 9 we had dinner at the J's at 10 oclock. May, Clay & I raised Cain going over. I got into the mud by a watering trough then wadded in the trough to get the mud off. 1909 July Tues 6 The girls went to Tacoma to spend a couple of days with friends. Nell and I did house work all day, swept, dusted etc. Read a little while in the even- ing. It is quite cool again fires in the fireplace are not un- confortable. Clay and I work- ed on the machine as long as we could see, then visited. There's lots to be done on a big machine after a long trip. They say we rode over a hundred miles yesterday. 1909 July Wed 7 I worked all the morning on the machine. I cleaned and filled the lamps, polished the nickle, scrubbed the rubber treads and cleaned the whole thing generally. My apron and hands were a sight when I finished. An old friend of Coz. W's came just as we were finishing lunch & wanted us to go to the fair with him. We got back at 6:30. At nine Clay and I walked over to the car with him then took a walk. Pretty night we sat on the steps a long time found Belle & May here when we came in. They had a fine time in Tacoma. 1909 July Thur 8 We got up rather late and started for West Seattle at 11:30 to spend the day with Mrs. Sargent. We took the ferry and had a nice ride over. Lovely warm day. We had such a good lunch dandy hot biscuit. Then we went out black- berreing. Awfully pretty place with a view of the sound. Coz. W. and Clay came over at 6:30 in the machine. We had a fine dinner visited until 10 and then had such a nice ride home. Mr. S has a home craft shop and does lovely work. 1909 July Fri 9 I got up and rode down as far as Broadway with the boys, then took a car back. We worked around. May made a black berry pie and candy and I made walnut cookies. I dressed and went down to call on Mrs. Flanner who is staying at Denny Way. She seemed very glad to see me and we had a good visit. Then I went down town did some errands and rode home from the shop with the boys. Walked up to the tower after dinner and went to bed early. 1909 July Sat 10 I got up at quarter of six and got breakfast for the boys. Then stuffed eggs. Belle made sandwitches etc. We started for Fauntleroy Park at 11. Met Mrs. Barrett and a friend with her (Mrs B's two children, down town. Its a beautiful ride out and such a lovely place cedar grove on the beach. We had lots of fun altho it rained most of the time. Reach- ed home at about 5:30. We stayed in all evening did broom stunts and other foolish things. 1909 July Sun 11 We arose rather late. Had fine hot cakes for dinner. I dusted all around. Then May, Belle, Clay, Coz. W and I went to church. Shifted our toilets when we got home and started for Kent at two oclock. Its about a 15 mile ride over there. I never saw such cherries. I climbed right up in a tree of huge black ones and ate until I nearly burst. We took a walk had a nice lunch and got home at 9:30. The people gave us a pail full to bring home and a huge bunch of Easter lilies & roses. 1909 July Mon 12 14 Cloudy and cool and looked like rain. It cleared off toward noon and the sun came out. I washed a waist for Belle and one for May, and some other little things. Coz. W. was up this way so had lunch with us, and took B, M & me down town. The girls made some calls I went to see a Teacher's agent, had a visit with Jed and did some errands. May, Clay & I went for a walk in the evening. Some friends of Belle's called, two girls just returned from Alaska They say its a glorious trip. 1909 July Tues 13 We got up rather late and didn't have time for any- thing but to put up the lunch for another picnic at Fauntleroy Park. I wrote a long letter home. We did some errands down town and met the three girl's, B's friends, at 11. We had a fine time it was a beautiful day we built a fire made coffee, broiled chops, boiled frankfürters and the girls went in wadding. May and I put on our blue muslins when we got home. We rode over to mother's a few minutes, lovely night. I had 3 letters this morning. 1909 July Wed 14 We were all rather lazy today. I ironed the girls waists and they sewed, visited etc. I've read awhile this afternoon. Had a letter from father. Mother and he are at Lake Mitchell with the University Club for three days. Dr. Gifford and Miss Folsom have announced their engagement. After dinner Mr. and Mrs. Jacobson were here, also Mrs. Morrison and her daughter. We were all rather tired. I had a letter from father written from Lake Mitchell. 1909 July Thur 15 We got up in good sea- son and hustled. I made a maccaroon pudding and dusted all thro. Mrs. Sargent and little Hedda came at about noon. We just had a nice visit and sewed all the afternoon. Mrs. S came before dinner. We danced and had lots of fun in the evening. Just at dinner time Miss Austin called and at lunch time there were other callers, friends from Port Townsend. May, Clay and I went for a walk. We raised Cain. C & I didn't go in until late, nice night. 1909 July Fri 16 We read, sewed, etc in the morning. I talked with Carrie we had an early lunch and went down town. We did errands, banged around, went to the market. Clay and I worked on the machine most of the evening. We all 'turned in' early. 1909 July Sat 17 I wrote letters and postals, did the dishes, got breakfast, May and Belle went to the market and got things for to- morrow's picnic. We girls put on our glad rags and went to see Mrs. Fiske in 'Salvation Nell' it was fine. We had callers when we got home. Coz. W and I walked over to the tower and then took quite a walk. I called on Mrs. Flanner a few minutes. May and Clay walked down on Broadway. Belle and Nell put up tomorrow's lunch. 1909 July Sun 18 We had breakfast late and went over to Jacobsons in the big car at ten oclock. There were thirty two in the party and we had a launch just the right size. We went from Madrona Park to Sandy Point. It is a lovely spot and we had lots of fun. I met two or three lads I liked. We certainly had a lark. Awfully good lunch. After we got home our family and Mr. Thorn and the Jacobsons went for a ride. I rode in the J's car. Mt. Ranier was beautiful from Sandy Point. 1909 July Mon 19 Nell's shampoo lady came and we all had shampoos and a did a little washing. Right after lunch I went down to Caroline's and sewed on my pink waist. I stayed to dinner and C and W came home with me. I had a letter from father enclosing a check. Its been the warmest day we've had. The folks made some calls while I was gone. I slept down stairs with Nell. It was too warm to sleep well. 1909 July Tues 20 I didn't get up as early as usual. Wrote a letter home and went down to Caroline's at about eleven oclock. Today is little Leslie's birthday five years old and it doesn't seem possible! I sold my return ticket to San Francisco to a friend of May's. I finished my waist at about four oclock then C and I went down town. Belle and May were invited out to dinner. Warmest day we've had. 1909 July Wed 21 Warm morning. We all got up late. I went over on Queen Ann hill and called on Mrs. Estey. We had a nice visit. She is with her parents for a couple of months I got home just in time to dress for the card party at Mrs. Barrett's. There were five tables and we had a fine time, such dainty refreshments too. Clay is in the hospital they think he has a slight attack of appendicitis. May and I went to see Marie Doro in 'The Morals of Marcus' dandy. 1909 July Thur 22 Belle won the first and Nelle the 'booby' prize yesterday. both boxes of candy. Clay is better this morning. We've been working dusting and swee- ing. 1909 July Fri 23 We girls took the 8:30 boat for Vashion Island. Coz. W took us down in the machine It is an hour's ride over. A lovely day and we had a fine time. The girls cousin is in a camp where there are about 40 people, a lovely beach too. We walked up thro the woods picked black berries and the[n] after dinner lots of cherries at a farm we brot a box home. We had dinner down town, all went to see Clay then for a short ride and home. 1909 July Sat 24 We got up very late had lots of mail. I wrote some letters, May went down town Belle and Nellie went to see Marie Doro and May and I to 'The Blue Mouse'. It was rather silly but we enjoyed ourselves. Mr. Thorne rode home with us. Clay is getting on O.K. A Mr. McClellan called in the evening. We walked down to the end of the street and watch- ed the fire works. They were fine. 1909 July Sun 25 Perfectly beautiful day. I'll bet it is warm in Vt. today. May and I went to the Pilgrim Congregational church. The service was very nice. We met two of the last sundays pic- nicers there. The rest of the family went to see Clay. May and I got lunch. Then we went for a nice ride out toward Tacoma a rode we hadn't been on before. We got back at 7 had dinner at a restaurant down town and then went up to see Clay. He's coming home tomorrow. 1909 July Mon 26 It rained all the morning and until about 1 oclock. I had a long letter from Metz she wants me to go to the Boston normal this fall and room with her. I went down to see Clay and visited with him a couple of hours. Then went down town talked with Jed about my ticket and did some errands. Mr. Reiley called on Clay in the evening. He went right to bed when he got home. Coz. W. raised Cain we laughed & laffed. We girls sat up until 11:30 and finished 'Rose o' the River' 1909 July Tues 27 Nell was sick in bed all day. We girls wrote letters and talked all morning. Belle and May packed in the afternoon. Mrs. Jacobson was here also Zanfretta and several called up to say 'Goodby'. Ruth Milroy called just before we went up to Mrs. Cobbs for the evening. Clay didn't feel able to go or Nell of course. There were about twenty then we had a very pleasant evening sang and played pool. We swiped some Mt. Ash berries on the way home for Belle. It was after one when we got to bed. 1909 July Wed 28 15 Belle was up at five and I was at 5:30. I got breakfast. We all went down in the machine to see the girls off. We hated to see them go and the house seem- ed lonely. Nell and I just stayed home. Nell sewed and I read aloud from 'Anne of Green Gables'. In the evening we went over to the Jacobsons'. I had letters today from Bill, father, Marge and R.C. Wrote a letter to May. I made a cake and desert yesterday and got dinner. 1909 July Thur 29 I got breakfast for the boys did the dishes and went down town to see about my ticket. The office was so crowded I didn't succeed. Nell and I had fried chicken for lunch. I wrote some letters and read aloud to Nell from 'Ann of Green Gables' qute story. We all went over to Mrs. J's in the even. and made a call. Also called at Dr. Calhoun's on the way. May & Belle were due home at 9:P.M 1909 July Fri 30 Got up and got breakfast, built a fire did the dishes and read aloud awhile. Then I washed my pink gingham and several other things. I iron- ed in the afternoon it was rather warm. Nell sang while I ironed and sang all the even- ing. Such a sweet voice. We finished our book before we went to bed. 1909 July Sat 31 I got up and went down town with the boys. Coz. W. came back to the ticket office with me we talked it over then I consulted Jed and finally bought it straight Canadian P. Mr. & Mrs. Foster of Chicago called in the after- noon Mrs. F. is a coz. her grand- mother & mine were sisters. Nell and I went to market. Coz. W went to the fair with some friends. Nell, Clay and I went to see Ferris Hartman in 'The Ameer' 1909 August Sun 1 Clay took Grace Rieley and her coz Miss Hall and me to church. We went to the Presb. Mr. Mathews' church. Then we went for a little ride. After dinner we all and a friend of Coz. W's went for a dandy ride down around Alki Point. We called on some friends of theirs there and had a fine time. Lovely night tho not clear. We got to bed early. 1909 August Mon 2 Lovely morning, I took the 9 oclock boat for Tacoma. Mrs. Foster met me and we went for a car ride up thro the residential district. Mr. Foster met us for lunch and then we took a very pretty ride out thro the country to lake. I started back at 4 oclock its a very pretty 2 hr. boat ride. Rode home with the boys. Had the best view ever of Mt. Rainier from lake 1909 August Tues 3 I did odd jobs and wrote letters in the morning. I phoned Eleanor Estey and we met down town and went to the fair together. It was my fairwell visit. We enjoyed the afternoon together. Mr. Thorn called in the evening and Mrs. Morrison & Sanfretta came in awhile too. We sang and played until nearly twelve. 1909 August Wed 4 Nell had a new 'slave' arrive at 6 last night. Shes O.K thus far. I sponged and pressed my grey and green suits did some mending etc. At 2:30 Nell and I met Gracie Ruley and a friend of hers, Eleanor and her sister and we went out to Alki Point and in bathing at the Navatorium. We had lots of fun it was my first salt water experience. Coz W took some business friends to ride in the evening. Bed early. 1909 August Thur 5 I used the forenoon pack- ing in order to be ready to light out tomorrow morning at nine. After lunch Nell and I went down town to do some last errands. Nell had her hair dressed. I stopped to say goodby to Mrs. Flanner and Carrie W. came to say goodby. Mr. Thorne Clay, Nell and I went to the dance in the machine. Had just a dandy time. It was a lovely night and we got home at about one. 1909 August Fri 6 I got up early and had my trunk ready to go at 7:30. Coz. W. took us down to the dock in the machine. I certainly hated to wave a last good by to them and to see the last of Seattle. I did enjoy the ride to Vancouver. We stopped an hour at Victoria and I got out a few minutes. Its a quaint old place. The rest of the trip from to Van- was magnificent right in among the mountains. Made good connections at V- and went to bed in good sea- son. 1909 August Sat 7 When we woke it was beautiful I hated to think that we had missed lovely scenery in the night. I watch- ed the sun rise from my win- dow and it was grand. we were right among the mountain lakes. All day we were among the mts. snow peaked and green at the base. We had dinner at Glacier and the air was so cool and lovely. Not unbareably warm yet. Two nice girls from Indiana sit across the asile. 1909 August Sun 8 I got up late and had a nice breakfast. Rather warmer than yesterday. We stopped at every fence corner it seemed. Just prairie land all day, farms etc. Not very interesting. I wrote some postals west and visit- ed with the Indiana girls. I didn't feel very well and didn't eat much. Thot of the people at 905 and in camp and envied them all. We went thro some pretty country toward night. 1909 August Mon 9 Hot day and I woke up feeling bum with a cold. I caught it on the boat I think. The Indiana girls got off at Winnipeg. We stayed there a half hour and I walked on the platform. We went thro the 'Lake of the Woods' regeon [region] and it was pretty but warm. This makes the third night. There were thirteen children in the car at one time today. I expect the crowd assembles in camp today. 1909 August Tues 10 It was pretty most of the day but I felt so bum with my cold. My eyes, and nose wept all the time and I sneezed steady I felt a little better toward night and played a game of five hundred with some people across the asile. Theres a newly-wed pair on. I have a young English man on with me. Hes quite pleasant but expects me to entertain him all the time and I don't feel like it. 1909 August Wed 11 I was so glad to wake up and feel that I had no more nights on the train. We got into Montreal at 8.45 those last two hours were the longest. The Englishman in- sisted on showing me around M- It really is a lovely old city and home foliage and the big trees looked so good to me. I left for H at 2:20 and landed at 4:20. The bunch met me and it did seem so good to be here. Marsh- mellow toast in the eve. 1909 August Thur 12 The Metzgers, Blanchards, Russlows etc are here and Grace, Theron, Hester, Bill, Lucile, Marge, and Pete are in our cottage and Tent. We started at eleven on a picnic Uncle Walt went with us. We landed at Hog Island and had lots of fun all day. The boys, Rob, Joh, Julian and Solan have the Dean cottage. The wind went down as usual and they came for us with a launch. We got in at eight, dressed and went to a dance. My cold is bum. I'm awfully hoarse. Sara came on the 6:20 yesterday. 1909 August Fri 13 16 We had a sing after breaf- ast and then I went up to the Thayers and had a nice visit. Some of the people went fishing and some sailing Marge and I washed after dinner. Then I took care of Hester while Grace played bridge I wrote a letter to Coz. Warren. We were all invited to the Blanchard cottage in the even. They had lanterns out front. Pulled candy and had other kinds & lemonade. Then played fruit basket. 1909 August Sat 14 Marge and Pete got up at five to say goodby to Uncle Walt who drove to Swanton to take his train. We sailed over to Goose Bay and dug for arrow heads. Harrison came yesterday. We all dressed and walked down to the 3:30 to see Solan and the Metzgers off. Then we went over to the excursion and danced until supper time Everyone went to bed in good season. We sat on the ridge and they sang, I'm awfully hoarse and am develop- ing a cold sore. Letter from Clay. 1909 August Sun 15 Nice breeze. Primus, Clara, Mrs. Hendry and William steamed in in their auto at about 3:30 left home at 8 a:m. We spent a quiet morning My trunk came. We dress- ed, and went sailing after dinner. It was quite rough so we didn't go to Philipsburg as we first intend- ed. The mast did too many acrobatic stunts. Everyone was rather 'in' in the evening. We sat on the ridge awhile and sang. My voice hasn't come back yet. 1909 August Mon 16 Quite a number of Randolph people came up on the excursion in spite of the rain. Among them Aunt Hannah & Uncle J. We played cards all the morning. Then we dressed and went over to the park and danced, then all but Marge & Lucile accom- panied Mr. C. Grow as far as St. A. We had lots of fun, ate ice cream, hot dogs and monkey- ed around until the 6:30. We had a party up at Mrs. T's in the evening, played cards ate rabbit, hot chocolate and candy, toasted marshmellows too. 1909 August Tues 17 I stayed at Mrs. T's all night as it was damp and they thot it would be better than the tent for my cold. It cleared off nicely and we started for P- at 8:30. The breeze went down when we were about 1 1/2 mls. out and we didn't get in until 2 oclock. We bought out the crackers, fruit and sardines of the town. Telephoned for Platt's launch to tow us home. When he got there his engine broke and a breeze came up and we towed him instead. Took down the tent in a hurry as it be- gan to rain. Packed then had a candy pull in the boy's cottage. 1909 August Wed 18 Closed up everything and left old Highgate at 10:30 until another year. Had planned to climb Mt. Mansfield but it was so rainy they gave it up. Marge & Lucile came home with us. We all went down and bowled in the afternoon. Grace, Theron and Hester stopped at the Park for a few days. Julian started for East Randolph at 5. We just visited in the evening. I was so glad to be home again and to see all the people. Petie left us at Essex Junction. 1909 August Thur 19 Marge and Lucile, Bill and I walked up to see the little trees belonging to the Telephone Co. where Rob is working. He personally con- ducted us, it is very interesting. M & L. went down to the Rowell's before dinner, we wanted to keep them. I unpacked and visited. Went down town in the afternoon, called at the Hastings. We went driving in the evening to hear the band concert. Saw the girls a minute. 1909 August Fri 21 I straightened my room put away my things, dusted. I made a cake and stuffed eggs for our picnic. We the same eight who came down to- gether, went down by the boat house and ate our supper. We had lots of fun the boys had had Marge and Lucile out to ride in the afternoon. We all went to see them off Jule left on the same train it was the bust up of the crowd. 1909 August Sat 20 I did house work all the morning and took care of Hester in the afternoon. I bought material for a white waist. Walked over to the Rowell's with Hester and the girls walked back with me we had ice cream together. We all went down tot the Chedels in the evening, cards 'up jenkins' and chafing dish supper. Slews of fun we left there at 12 came up here played hearts & cribbage until 2. The girls stayed with us. 1909 August Sun 22 Bill didn't feel well so stayed home with Hester. Grace and Mother went to church. I wore my pink silk, very warm. Amos came up right after dinner and spent the afternoon then we walked up on the hill Bill, A & I, we picked up Rob and walked awhile. We were all invited over to the Hollises for ice-cream in the evening, then went to bed early. 1909 August Mon 23 Made a desert and dust- ed around some and then cut a shirt waist and work- ed on it until after dinner time. Everyone took short naps. I wrote a few cards and mailed them and walked home with Bill. Mrs. Brooks, Florence and Wanda called a few minutes and Grace and Florence called on the Key West Lady. Aunt Julia's people were in. Long letter from Marge. 1909 August Tues 24 I made a cake and desert, sewed on my waist and visited with Aunt Harriet. We all had naps and Aunt H. went over to Aunt Julia's. Mother went down to Aunt Hannah's for tea with the Idleton people. Grace and I called on the Draper's. I wrote a letter in the evening and went down and posted it, walked home with father. 1909 August Wed 25 Very warm. I sewed but do not get on very fast. We have to lie down after dinner we're so tired and warm. Desier Moulton called. Grace and Theron had tea at Guy's with Robert Wilson and his wife. I went down town and did a few errands. Robert was up in the evening. Bill went over to see Fannie Prince. Guy came over to get R & I for ice cream at about 10. Lovely moonlight night. 1909 August Thur 26 Warm and sultry. Still sewing. Theron, Guy Wood- ward, DeWitt and a cousin went up to survey Theron's farm. It rained by spells but they got it done and were home early in the afternoon. Warm day. I sewed and visited with Aunt H. getting on rather well on my waist. Willis C. got up a corn roast on the island. We had a dandy time. Bill, Fannie, Icy M, Gertrude H, Miss Updegraphe, & I, Willis, John, Rob, Amos, Aurther H, & friend. Beautiful moonlight night, we canoed on the river Rob & I. Fannie was here for tea. Bed at 12:30. 1909 August Fri 27 Perfectly beautiful day, clear and cool. I sewed and visited with Aunt Harriet, then went down to the 1:25 with her. We hated to have her go. I came home and finished my waist. Mother went to Uncle Lewis Fish's funeral. Mrs. Story and Mrs. Howell called. Mr. Morrow came around with the folks a minute, looks just the same. Guy W., Willis, John, Maude, Miss U. and I went driving in the even- ing way up by Sanford farm and home thro Finley Brige. Lots of fun; bed at 12:30 again 1909 August Sat 28 Cooked a little and sewed. Grace and Theron had dinner at Aunt Hannah's. Mother was sick and went to bed right after dinner. I had a headache and didn't accomplish much in the afternoon. Theron came home early and we visited, he leaves on the night train. Our Highgate pictures came from M & L - dandy. Nice letter from Clay yesterday. Mary M, Bill and I walked down town in the eve. Lovely night. Grace and Theron took tea at Minnie's. 1909 August Sun 29 Sprinkled a little at church time and rained hard while we were at church. Cleared off lovely in the afternoon. We pulled candy Guy's folks were here also Mr. Sherborne. Later we went to ride and 'picked up' Mr. Beedon, Amos, I should say. Bill and I walked down for the mail then Rob was here. After awhile we walked out glorious moon, rather cool tho. I've decided on Bay Path Institute, Springfield. 1909 August Mon 30 I began sewing on my waist right after breakfast and kept at it most of the day. Its rather cool but pleasant. Grace, mother and Aunt Julia went to ride and made calls. I sewed. In the eve. we three girls went down to call on Mary & Lucy Moulton and then at the Hastings. Nell was feeling jolly and we had lots of fun. 1909 August Tues 31 After we girls got home last night we talked until one oclock! It was the first real visit we had had. I stopped sewing long enough to dust and pick up around the house. Its cold as green land we had a fire in the fire place. Ann Hammond called, also Gertrude Wood. The Hollises were here for tea and Rob was here in the evening, we played cribbage. 1909 September Wed 1 Still cold I'm wear- ing my blue dress these days as every thing else is in the wash. Aunt Julia and Mrs. Hollis were her [here] in the afternoon we all sat in mother's room and sewed. Clara, Anne and Alice Hall called late. I walk- ed down town with them. Bill, Grace and I went down then and called in the af evening. I spent half the morning at the dentist's. 1909 September Thur 2 Its been raining off and on the last two days but is nicer now. Grace took Hester over to Mrs. B's. Mother wash- ed for me all the morning. The Stewart girls called in the afternoon. Grace was out with Hester. I went over to the Mortons to tell them about my trip the to the Brookes. I had just started on an 'illustrated lecture' when mother came for me R.C. was there. Grace and Gail played cards at Guy's. 1909 September Fri 3 Warm and fair for the sanitorium auto day. I ironed all the morn ing. M. & L. Moulton called. Ann Hammond took Grace driving all morning. Right after dinner Grace, father, Ned and Fannie went to Bethel in Skinner's auto. I took Hester down town in the afternoon. Every- one was out. They made 150. We had ice cream. I went over to Mrs Rince's a minute then spent the rest of the evening at the Brookses. 1909 September Sat 4 I got my waist nearly finished the collected every thing in my room ready to pack. Mother made the botton [button] holes in the afternoon and I did odd jobs on my wai clothes. Miss Saxton called. It showered toward night. I went down town and did a few last errands. Rob was up in the eve. we B, R & I walked out to the band concert. Then we played cribbage and visited until 12:30. I packed until 1:30. 1909 September Sun 5 I got up at 5:45 and Bill helped me finish pack- ing. It was showery so I dressed for the train. We all went to church. Grace had dinner ready when we got home. I flew around the neighborhood and said goodby. I hated to leave home so soon again awfully. It poured when we started for the train but cleared soon. Lou met me. We Marge, L, & I went driving then we made pulled candy, awfully good. 1909 September Mon 6 Grandma Smith seems quite well. Dr. & Mrs. G. W are here. L & I took the 6:45 for Springfield and Marge the 11:30 for Boston. We had a lovely ride down. Glorious day and beautiful valley. We came right up to Mrs. Laird's had din- ner then started out looking up one or two places Mrs. L had en- quired about, for me. I wrote a letter home, we visited and went to bed. 1909 September Tues 7 Lovely morning. I decided to go to Mrs. Vining a friend of Mrs. Lairds. I went down to have my trunk sent up. Rachel Bruce, Mrs. L's cousin walked down with me. School went all right and I think I'm going to like it. I came home and unpacked my trunk and played the piano awhile. I walked over to the Lairds' in the evening and we went into Dr. Sherman's a few minutes then they walked home with me. 1909 September Wed 8 I rode down. School went O.K. They've started me in book keeping and short hand, also in pen-manship. I've been making goose eggs all over the paper. I bought some gloves and met Lou and Mrs. Laird just as I was starting home. We rode up together and I stayed until nearly dinner time teaching L my two short- hand lessons. Read and walk- ed over to the library with Paul. I studied a little and retired early. 1909 September Thur 9 Looked some what like rain. I walked down. I have to teach my first book keeping lesson before the class tomorrow. Came home and studied awhile then wrote a letter to Clay and some postals. I walked over to the Lairds and found two letters also a postal yesterday. Lou is getting on O.K. in school and likes it very much. We're going on a corn roast to- morrow night at the Country Club. 1909 September Fri 10 It looked like rain when I started for school. At noon it was raining hard. I got thro my first teaching lesson in book keeping. I went over to Dr. Sherman's office and found the corn roast was given up. Cutest club house we had a big fire in the fire place, roasted potatoes, corn and broiled steak, had coffee, cake and melons. We ate so much and laughed so much. Danced the Vir. reel and got home at 10. Lots of fun. 1909 September Sat 11 Perfectly glorious day. Paul and I went for a walk out thro the park and arranged to play tenis after dinner. Lou & I invested in some sneakers. I wrote up two weeks in my diary. After dinner we played or played at the game until 3 oclock. Then I had a bath & a shampoo. Found a letter from Bill when I got home saying mother, Aunt Julia, Grace, Hester Mrs. Ham and Mrs. Hollis were thrown out of the carriage tug broke, no one seriously hurt. Mother rather badly bruised. Paul and I walked to the library and over to Lairds. 1909 September Sun 12 Got up at six thirty and worked a little. I'm to teach geography a half hour every day this week. Paul and I went to church. Lovely morning. After dinner Rachel, Paul, and I went for a long walk out to Barney's home and out thro the park. Its perfectly lovely. Lucile went to dinner with some college friends. I studyed, then Paul and I played duets until bed time. Left home a week ago today. 1909 September Mon 13 Another lovely day. I walked to school. They are keeping us hustling these days. My geography went O.K I guess. They started us in typewriting today. Maurine is at home on a visit. Mother is better but I'm worried. I found letters form Bill, Clay, and a card from Metz. Took my sewing over to the Lairds a few min- utes. 1909 September Tues 14 18 Looked a little like rain. I walked to school and worked until time to begin. Haven't been feeling very well the last two days. It grew hotter all day. I put on a muslin dress when I got home, and took my work over to the park and watched Lou and Miss Tinkam [Tinkham] play tennis. Didn't feel like play- ing, all in. Mr. V's niece and sister were here in the evening. 1909 September Wed 15 Still warm but rain- ed a little in the morn- ing. Still feeling rather bum, think I have some cold. Lou came down after school and we did some errands, got a fob for Bill and walked home. I went over with Lou awhile. Mrs. Vining, Paul and I went for a walk over to the park, then I studied a little and went to bed early. 1909 September Thur 16 I walked to school and hustled with my geography. Work is piling up, I wore my sweater most of the day and felt chilly and sick. I could not eat any lunch. I stayed and worked until five oclock. Felt a little better toward night letters from R.C. and Belle. Its nice to get home and get my mail every night. Bed early. 1909 September Fri 17 Rode to school early. We had tests in everything and I gave one in geography. Feeling a little better today. Went up to see Rachel at noon a few minutes. Miss Lyman asked me to go up to Miss Tinkman's [Tinkham's] with her. Lou was there and we came home together. Grace and little Hester start for Washington tonight. Grace's birthday to- morrow. 1909 September Sat 18 I was down stairs at quater [quarter] of six. I worked on my book- keeping from 7 til 11:30, then bathed, dressed and after dinner went to ride with Mr. V. out thro the park. Glorious day, clear and lovely. When we got back Mrs. V. and I drove over to see her parents then down town. I drove dandy little rig, a friend is letting them use it for a few days. Letter from Aunt H. I bought some pumps and did some errands for her. Went over to Dr. Sherman's in the evening we all played cards. Lovely night. Grace Gates called an hour after dinner, aw- fully glad to see her we had a nice visit. 1909 September Sun 19 Glorious day. We wore muslins to church. Lou sat with Mrs. V & me. I stayed to S.S. with Rachel. Corrected papers all the afternoon. Mrs. V & I went for a walk toward even. I wrote some letters. Then Paul Mrs. V and I went for a walk, bed early I was awfully tired. Paul went on a corn roast last night. A year ago today Grace, Guy, Leslie, Edith, Mortimer and I went on a picnic up Rochester Hollow. 1909 September Mon 20 Rather cooler. I went to school early and worked on my book k- I want to catch up with the people who began a week ahead of me. I stayed after school and worked until 5:30. Letter from mother she's better but had a bad fall. Paul had a committe meeting on Floren- so I spent the evening at the L- we sewed and Lou read aloud Paul saw me home. Cool even- ing, they had an open fire. I hate to think of fall. 1909 Semptember Tues 21 Rode to school early and worked until four. Head ached so I couldn't work when I got home. Got my shoe and Lou's from the shoe maker's and walked over with her's be- fore dinner, its warmer again. Mrs. V. and I went over to her brothers in-laws after dinner awhile. My head ached awfully I went right to bed when we got home. 1909 September Wed 22 Rained a little at noon. I stayed and ran the type writter after school and did my first perfect page hooray! Found a letter from Bill when I got home telling of the arrival of another girl in Guy's family! That's fine two boys and two girls I wonder if I may write finis! Paul and I walked over to Louie's a few minutes. It rained a little awfully hot and muggy. 1909 September Thur 23 Still awfully close and warm and look like rain. I'm starting on my March work in bookkeeping. They are hustling us in short hand too. I stayed and did another per- fect page in typewriting. I don't think its going to bother me now. Found the 'Buz' when I got home read and studied until eight. Then Paul and I went over, no I went and Paul came for me because it began to rain a little. The sun came out at noon and I thot it had cleared. 1909 September Fri 24 Rained when I started for school and has been drizzling all day. I stayed at school and worked have five perfect papers now. I've been darning stockings this even. Then Paul and I went for a walk and stopped in to see Lou, a minute. Its raining hard now. Had a card from Bill today, she was at the fair at the Jc. yesterday. Rained ahrd nearly all night. 1909 September Sat 25 Cleared off nice. I went down town with Lou and Mrs. G. Wheeler, who is having Dr. S. do some work on her teeth We rubbered at hats. I sewed and did odd jobs until 3:30, then Mrs. V. & I went down town. She had a suit fitted. I tried on hats and long coats. Lovely sun- set. It rained a little no, Paul and some friends went walk- ing. Lou and Rachell were here also. Mr. & Mrs. Lathrope and Miss Bates. 1909 September Sun 26 Cool and cloudy but good air. Lou, Rachell, Mr. L & I went for a long walk instead of going to church. We walked a good five miles out Long- meadow way. In the afternoon Mr. & Mrs. V, P & I had the Lathrope's team to go driving. We had a fine ride out in the country. We got bunches of asters and golden rod. It began to rain, just as we were getting home and rained all the evening. I wrote home. 1909 September Mon 27 Rained all night and all day. I guess this is the 'line storm' mother tells of. I began teaching a type writing class. Handed in two more papers. A Mt. H. girl, a friend of Miss Lyman is going to enter the class tomorrow. I read and worked all evening. Found a letter from mother and a Buz. Mother isn't over her lameness yet her side and are still pain her so that she doesn't sleep well. 1909 September Tues 28 It has rained all day un- till about 4 tonight. I guess the wells and springs are filled. Its been damp and disagreeable but we're thankful for the rain. R.C., John, Willis and Cope went to the fair and over to Hanover in an auto. I took my sewing over to the Lairds' in the evening and Paul came for me at 9. Mrs. V's two sisters and husbands were here. We got to bed at eleven. We played and sang. It is still cloudy but I don't think its go- ing to rain any more. 1909 September Wed 29 Brite and fair. I walked to school. Rode home and ironed two shirt waists. Then studied until 8:30 and turn- ed in. Perfectly glorious night, full moon too bad to have it go to waste but some people are probably injoying it. 1909 September Thur 30 19 I walked to school early and did some typewriting but didn't get a correct page. Mrs. Hollis telephoned from Hartford at eleven oclock that they would be here at 10 minutes of twelve, I met them and we went to 'the Wortly' had a fine dinner and a nice visit. I was late to school but nothing happened to me. I saw them off at 3:10 and met Mrs. H's other sister. I went over to see Lou a little while. She isn't feeling well. I had a nice letter from Marge today - She likes her work and is having a good time. 1909 October Fri 1 I walked to school with Paul and his friends. Studied until nine. We had one test after the other and did nothing but write I didn't have time to go out to lunch, got one of the girls to get me an eclair and some bananas. T'was kind of a Jonah day I didn't get a page of t-. Found a letter from Bill when I got home. Paul and I went to a supper over at the church. We had lots of fun. The Lairds, Latamers, Sherman's etc all sat at one table. Stayed with Lou until 9 read until 10:30 wrote a 13 page letter to Bill bed at 12. 1909 October Sat 2 Another beautiful day. I walked down to school and "typewrited" three papers. Then went into one or two stores and came home. After dinner I was so dead sleepy I took a nap. Then I walked down Forest Ave. and called on Grace's friend Carrie Wiggin. After that I walked over to see Lou and went down with her to meet Mrs. Rogers, who is to be with Mrs. Laird this winter. Mr. V. and I played cribbage awhile. 1909 October Sun 3 It was nice when we went to church. I walked over with Lou after church. It sprink- led a little as I was coming home. I stayed in all the afternoon read wrote letters and played the piano. Mrs. V. & I went over to see her father and mother in the evening. We had a nice visit her father is gaining rapidly. I wrote thirteen pages to Mary Smith and ten to Belle. 1909 October Mon 4 It sprinkled a little when I started for school so I rode. They've started the furnice at school and its too warm most of the time. They've been re- modeling the interior of the building and things have been rather mussy but its getting quite respectable now. Usual day, Monday never goes as well as other days. I walked home. Found a letter from Mother. 1909 October Tues 5 I walked to school, warm and nice, wore my pink gingham. Worked hard and stayed after school until five did two t- pages and spoiled a third. Mrs. and Miss Vining had been here. I studied and wrote a letter. Some time today I've gotten a big ink spot on my dress, on the hem in the front bredth. I don't know what to do with it. 1909 October Wed 6 Perfectly glorious day. I rode to school early and worked hard all day I didn't even stop to go out to get lunch. I came home early and went to the Ladies Aid reception with Mrs. V. We had a very pleasant time. Lots of pretty gowns, I wore my pink silk. Studied in the evening and played the piano. The new Etude came. 1909 October Thur 7 Another lovely day. I rode to school and worked hard all day. Walked home changed my clothes and went over to see Lou before din- ner. Mrs. Vinining was down town seeing about her suit. I stayed home and studied in the evening. 1909 October Fri 8 I walked to school in the morning and worked hard did some typewriting after school. Went over to see Lou in the evening we sat up- stairs and visited. I lent here some where-with-all. She's to have company over Sun- day and going up to college tomorrow afternoon. 1909 October Sat 9 Beautiful day. I wash- ed, mended, wrote and did 'odd jobs' all the morning. Mrs V. and I went down town in the afternoon and shopped I tried on coats and coats. Its awfully hard to decide on one. We were late getting home. We read in the evening and went to bed early. Lovely and warm almost too warm in the sun. We wore white linen skirts and no coats. 1909 October Sun 10 This is a glorious day, in- dian summer weather. Mrs. V and I went to church, I wore my white muslin dress. After church I went over to Lou's a minute. A friend of her's Mr. Earle Rogers D '08 is here. I liked him very. I called on Miss Vining and walked in the park in the afternoon, stopped a minute at the Lairds', Mr. R. left at 7 oclock. Played the piano and finish- ed a letter. 1909 October Mon 11 Nice day again but a little cooler. I walked to school early and hustled all day. Rode home, found a card from mother they drove 20 miles yester day thru Bethel-Gilead. Studied until dinner time and afterward awhile. Went over to Mrs. L's in the evening a few minutes Lou was out. Dr. and Mrs. Sherman came in. Paul came for me from the library. 1909 October Tues 12 Nice no it rained early and looked like an all day rain but cleared before noon. I walked home and stopped on the way to do several errands. Rather tired when I got home. Dressed and studied and went to a party or club meeting at the Sherman's Rachel asked me. Had a very nice time only felt rather bum. Saw Lou a minute as she was going to a Sym- concert with Miss Tinkham. 1909 October Wed 13 Walked down in the morning. Grace Gates called for me at 11:45 and we went to dinner together at Cooley. Had a nice dinner and a fine visit. She was seeing about a suit. Lou met me at 2 and we shopped. I bought a covert coat and she bought the trimmings for her winter hat and trimmed it after we got home its swell. I studied in the evening. Letter from Alice Mc. 1909 October Thur 14 Cooler, heavy frost last night. I walked to school and stayed and worked awhile also did an errand or two. Came home and studied. Ironed a little for Mrs. V. while she was getting dinner. I ironed a shirt wiast last night. Studied in the evening a little but felt rather bum. Have a big cold-sore on the way. Letter from Clay. 1909 October Fri 15 It rained at school time and I rode. Busy day as usual. Worked rather late and walked around and waited for Marge to go thro on her way to college. Saw her a minute, she's looking fine. Initiation tonight. Went over to Lou's and started on a brass candle shade. She can't go up to college until tomorrow. She's hustling on a pink crepê de chine, has a toast at the banquet tomorrow night. 1909 October Sat 16 20 I took ink spots out of various waists and washed and mend- ed in the morning also wrote up a week in my diary. After dinner I went over and gave Lou a little poem for her toast, & helped a little on her dress. Its very pretty. Mrs. L & the dress maker were hustling. L. left at 5:10. I came home at 3:30 and played cribbage with Mr. V. walk- ed over to the library with Mrs. V. in the evening and punched brass. Letter from Bill and card from Clay. 1909 October Sun 17 A cool fall day but nice air. I walked over to the Lathrop's with Paul a little while before church. The Lairds' and Shermans were away over Sunday. After church I made Mrs. Rogers a a call. Mrs. L. asked me to as she was afraid she would be lonely. After dinner I wrote letters until 3:30, Then had a very pleasant call on Mr. & Mrs. Chas. Hutchinson on my way to the train to meet L. Saw Marge about 20 mins. Went home with Lou, visited until 7:30 and came home read 'The Pillar of Light' 1909 October Mon 18 A cool day but nice. I walked to school. Miss Williams has gone to Phila. for a few days. Lou had a fine time at college. Miss Lyman came home from a week in N.Y. She had a great time. I had to teach book-keeping today, have it for the week. Stayed and did one page of typewriting. Letter from Mother enclosing one from Grace we're going to start a Round Robbin affair. Played cribbage with Mr. V. and finished my book. 1909 October Tues 19 Beautiful day but cool. I walked to school. Bought some gloves at noon and called for my coat on my way home. Had a bath and now am all dressed ready to see 'Cranford' to be given at the church. Letter from Aunt Harriet and and from Metzie. The play was fine. We enjoyed it very much Lou was sweet in it. They served tea, coffee and cake afterward and we had a pleasant time. 1909 October Wed 20 Lovely day I walked to school and wore my new coat. Its pretty and I think I'm going to like it. Stayed and worked on bookkeeping awhile. Met Mr. Palmer's cousin from Los Angeles and visited awhile with her. Studied before and after dinner. Miss Bates came in and we visited, played and sang. Paul and I have walked home with Miss B. and raced back. Mrs. V. has been putting up grape juice today and has been giving us samples. 1909 October Thur 21 Dense fog this morn- ing I rode down. Work went well today, I finished putting my March work into my books and have some done on April. Tonight after school I bought a black hat. Found a nice letter from Metz when I got home. Well I stayed all night with Lucile. We trimmed ny [my] had [hat] and then there were callers until 9:30. Rachel came over too. It just poured most of the night. 1909 October Fri 22 I came home and changed my clothes and rode to school. Miss Williams is back again. Felt bum all day. Lucile came down just before school was out. I went with her to Jemson's [Jenson's] and had a fudge Sun. then we went down to the train and met Pete and Mr. Rogers. Letters from Margaret & Loula, postals from Bill and Grace G. Petie stayed all night with me. Lou and Mr. R. walked over with us. 1909 October Sat 23 Beautiful morning. Pete and I had breakfast at 9 A:M. I walked over with her and saw them aboard their car for the game. I ate worms. Studied until 3:30 then went down town with Mrs. V. Saw Syidney T. as I was going to get off the car. We walked all around down town the [then] he walked home with me, we had a fine visit. Tommy couldn't cut to get here for the game. I had the laugh on Pete. Played cribbage with Mr. V. and read. It clouded up and rained a little this afternoon and is pouring now. 1909 October Sun 24 Cool morning and looks like more rain. Mrs. V and I went to church. Paul is sing- ing at the Christ Church down town. Pete and Tommy walked home from church with us. I stayed in all the afternoon and read. Mr. W.D. Vining, Miss Helen, and Mable called then Mrs. & Mrs. La - and Miss Bates. Miss B. stayed to lunch with us and we played sang and visited all evening Paul and I went home with her at 9:30. It rained a little. 1909 October Mon 25 Glorious morning, clear as a bell - Lucile phoned me to come over and go to the train with Pete. She had fainted eight times, she has an abcess forming on her back bone, has had it twice before. She got to the train O.K. and looked a little better. I am teaching arith. this week. Lucile came down to school and we each bought a pair of high shoes. Then visited and I corrected papers while she wrote a letter. Then she walked out to the corner with me. Studied all the evening. 1909 October Tues 26 I wore my new shoes to school and took my others to be tapped. The arith. is hard but I'm getting on O.K. with it so far. Stayed and did one page of type - . I found the Round Robin letter when I got home wrote that and sent it on. Met Miss. W at corner of state and Main went to a card party at Mr. Palmer's three tables very pleasant evening. Miss Lynam & her brothers, Mr. Gaugle, Mr. Ripley etc. Home at twelve, a glorious moonlight night. 1909 October Wed 27 Rode to school Work goes as usual. We are having aprox- imations and they are the limit but I understand them thank goodness, or I don't know where I'd be. Found letters from Aunt Harriet and Coz. Warren Studied hard until 6:30. Mrs. V had a cousin and bride from Colorado here for dinner, very nice. I went over to see Lou a few minutes in the evening - Paul came for me glorious night. 1909 October Thur 28 Cloudy and cooler this morn- ing. Stayed and did a 'page' after school. At noon I got tickets for 'Elsie Janis'. Found a book from Aunt H., card from Bill and suit case of things from home, furs, candy, books, music, spruce gum etc., when I got home, its grown decidedly cooler. The show was good and we enjoyed it. The theatre was awfully close tho. The wind blew a gale all night. I wore my furs, not to bed but to the show. 1909 October Fri 29 Cold and windy. Test day. I found a card from Grace G. saying she had to go to Boston so I won't go to Ware tomorrow. Went over to see Lou awhile before dinner and read and ironed my pink gingham after. I'm reading Castle Rack- rent' and like it. The wind still blows and its cold but there's a glorious big moon. Ideal Hallowe'en weather. 1909 October Sat 30 Beautiful clear day but still cool. I've been do- ing odd jobs and writing letters all day. Its Hallowe'en and I wish I were going to a dance or something, tonight. Guy and Gail went hunting last Wed. and Guy got a 100 lb. doe. Herald and Buz came today. Played cribbage with Mr. V awhile then Mrs. V and I went over to the lib. and around by the Laird's glorious night but cold. Paul went to a party. 1909 October Sun 31 Got up and went over to get Lou to go to church with me but she had a head ache so we walked in the park instead Pefect Indian summer day such a change from last night. Mrs. V's nephew Lewis Combes called in the after noon we played and sang and he stayed to lunch. Then we went down to the first church to hear the Creation sung. It was splendid. Lovely night we walked from the X home. 1909 November Mon 1 21 I walked to school. I'm a little 'off my feed' for a day or two. Had a lot of house work and found the Round Robin when I got home. So wrote that and sent it on. Also a letter from Clay in- closing letters from May and Ruth Mylroie. We were all in- vited over to the Lathrops to spend the evening. Played seven hand Euker and played and sang. drank cider and ate grapes. I didn't sleep well. 1909 November Tues 2 Walked to school. We're having Canada now in geography and it's very interest- ing. Rode home up around Lou's way and visited with her awhile. Lovely and warm and feels like rain tonight. Found a nice letter from Lula Jarvis. Read and studied all evening and went to bed early. 1909 November Wed 3 Very warm and foggy. We had a hard thunder shower last night. I walked both ways today. We had the whole day on bookkeeping as there was a Civil Service exam in our room. Found postals from Grace G. and Bill. Walked over to the drug store with Mrs. V. after dinner. Washed my hair and read in 'The Absentee'. Colder tonight. 1909 November Thur 4 I walked to school again and its colder. Am not feeling quite up to par. Lucile is going to have glasses. I went in to see Rachel on my way down also after school. L was having her eyes tried in the same build- ing. We three went into Jenson's and I treated as the rest were 'broke'. Read aloud to Lou in the evening in 'Henry Esmound'. Gov. Draper is re-elected. 1909 November Fri 5 Cold but clearing I have walked to school every day this week. I bought a center- piece to work for mother for Xmas. Got three pages of type- today. Felt rather bum and went up to L's and we read 'till dinner time. I'm going to ware tomorrow. Paul goes to choir rehearsal Fri. nights. He's singing in the Christ church at Vespers. I'm going to get a bath and get to bed early. 1909 November Sat 6 Clear and beautiful. I packed my suit case and got down town at 9:20 and just missed one express to Ware. Took the 10:15 and reached there at 12. I finished the 'Absentee' on the way over. Grace and I went down town in the after- noon and to a moving pic- ture show in the evening. we visited the rest of the time. Grace has done some beautiful embroidery. She has a new olive green suit braided broadcloth. 1909 November Sun 7 It grew quite cold in the night. But another lovely morning. Mr. Gates started for Boston early with a friend after an auto. Grace and I got up late. Visited and read all day, and just took things easy. I felt rather tired. We made one call just before I came away. I took the six oclock car and reached home at 8:15. I read 'The Squaw Man' on the way home. very inter- esting. 1909 November Mon 8 Rather a disagreeable day. I walked to school. Mrs. Laid telephoned my that I was invited to a bridge whist party at Mrs. Latimers. I came home a little early. Lucile came up on the same care with me. We had an awfully nice time at the party. The R.R. came, I wrote 14 pages and sent it on. Finished my book and studied. It rained all the afternoon. 1909 November Tues 9 A beautiful clear day. I rode as I was rather late starting. I'm hustling on my May work. Mr. Palmer dictated a letter to us, today. Did two pages in type-. The Folks have been having tonsilitis. Bill was in bed three days and Grace F. has it now. They are living on venison these days. Had Primus, Clara & William to dinner Sun. Went over to Lous and we em- broidered all the evening. 1909 November Wed 10 I walked to school. Mr. P is teaching us drafts. I batted around after school doing errands. Bill sent to me for an errand. Wrote a few postals and took my embroidery over and spent the evening with Miss Bates. She was alone and we sewed and had a nice visit. I'm getting right on, on my center-piece 1909 November Thur 11 Walked to school. Its warmer again. Miss W & I did some errands and I walked us as far as State. Took my furs over for Lou to wear to the game at Boston. She's been bum all day that old pain in her side. Rachel is having a new green dress and coat. I played the piano, walked over to the post office and sewed. I'm having that tired feeling lately. 1909 November Fri 12 Lovely and warm. I walked to school. Mr. P- wasn't there today and after lunch we just worked on bookkeeping. I skipped out to see Lucile off and she was feeling better. I walked up as far as State with Miss Leffingwell and then on home. Mrs. V was sitting on the piazza. Two letters. We went over to the Vinings in the evening. I'm getting on finely with my center-piece. 1909 November Sat 13 I had a bath before break - fast and walked down to school. Miss W & I worked on our books all morning and decided to go back in the after- noon. We worked steady un- til 4:30. I met Mrs. Vining then and we walked home. My head ached. I sewed and read and went to bed in good time. Rachel was over here last night. I went in to see her a few minutes today. Mrs. V, Paul & I went to church in the even. to hear Mr. Pudderfort. He was fine. Miss Bates sat with us. We met Lou just getting home from Boston on our way over. She had a big time. 1909 November Mon 15 Mr. Palmer is drilling us on drafts and they're the limit. There's a new girl in the training class and she's the funniest thing. Miss W. has her in short hand and I'm to have her in book - Miss W. calls her 'Beauty' and I call her 'Diana'. I have a man in bookkeeping too. I bought flowered ribbon & made a new belt for my white dress after school. Mrs. Empsal was here. Miss Bates & I went to the club dance together. Had a nice time. Mr. Adams brought us home in his auto. We found we were old acquaintances. He was at N.V. 2 yrs. 1909 November Tues 16 I walked to school. It is still warm but not as clear and lovely as last eve. It was just grand when we got home. I did n't have time to write the R.R. So hustled home from school and wrote it tonight. I've taken Lou's laundry over to her, and stopped in to see Rachel, she's better. L & Mrs. Laird were at a 500 Party at Mrs. Latimer's. I went to bed early. Postal from Jessie C. 1909 November Wed 17 22 It rained hard at school time and I rode. Miss W & I took Miss Lyman to lunch at the 'Pheonix'. We had lots of fun. I wrote a letter to Marge on the typewriter. Lou and Miss T came down to school awhile. I stayed all night with her and went to evening school. I met Mrs. Lard on the street and we looked at hats then gowns and I bought a green braided broad cloth to take the place of my blue dress. Think I'm going to like it very much. Miss Vang was in in the evening we sewed. Letter from Maurine 1909 November Thur 18 Its grown cold fast. I rode to school Stayed and worked until 4 oclock. Found a letter from Rete [Pete]. I'm invited over to Westfield to a card party Sat. afternoon at Miss Lyman's, wish I could have my new dress but it won't be ready. The wind blew a gale downtown. I sew- ed and studied and went to bed early. There's been an awful accident in a coal mine in Ill. 300 miners re- ported burned to death. Fire is still burning 1909 November Fri 19 Lovely morning but cool. I walked to school, wore my furs. Worked until four, did some errands and came home. Postal from Mary Mason. I took my hat over to Rachel in the evening and sewed awhile. She starts for Boston at 7:15 to- morrow morning for the game. Her new green dress and coat are fine and very becoming. Beautiful night. I had a bath. Read the paper and didn't get to bed as early as I meant. 1909 November Sat 20 Beautiful morning. I walked down to Meekins at 8:30 for a fitting on my dress, it took until eleven oclock. Came home and wrote some postals, then dressed to go to Westfield. I waited & waited for a car & finally walked. Just made the Westfield car met Lou at Court Square. We had an awfully good time. Four tables. We got home at 7. I read and played the piano. Bed at nine. Harvard got trimmed. H 0- Yale 8. 1909 November Sun 21 Beautiful morning. Such a warm beautiful day. I went to church with Mr. & Mrs. Laird. I had the tooth ache all night. Mrs. V & I visited most of the afternoon, and read some letters from her brother in Alaska. I went over to see L at about 4:30. She went to bed at 6:15 and I read to her till 8. Stopped in at the Sherman's a few minutes. Mrs. V. Paul & I went for a walk. Lovely night but cooler. 1909 November Mon 22 I rode to school, it look- ed like rain but clear- ed off. At 4 I met Mr. & Mrs. Morton at the station on their way to spend T- with Rob & Bertha. They had an hour's wait so I had a fine visit with them it did seem good to see them. They brought me a box of candy from Bill and a letter from mother. I found the R.R. at home and sent it on then studied. Rachel rode up on the same car with me. Had a grand time 1909 November Tues 23 I walked to school. It was nice but began to rain at noon. I rode up to Lou's after school and read to her until 6:30. She is feel- ing fine now. Squared up with me. Henry is getting interesting. Miss W. has gone home tonight. L & I are going to hear Schuman-Heink. I studied all the evening and went to bed early. It began snowing in the even- ing our first snow. Rachel brought my hat over. 1909 November Wed 24 It rained a sleeted off and on all day. I visited with Miss Lyman. Sent Bill the brass paterns she's been wanting. I looked at dresses for her after school but didn't find anything just right. Found the 'Buz' at home. I stayed at school quite late teachnig Beauty. The wind blows hard and its cold and there's about an inch of sleety snow. I sewed & dressed up as a chicken and we laughed until we were sore. 1909 November Thur 25 Miserable day as far as weather is concerned. It misted and half rained all day. Awful walking. I mended my blue dress and played the piano and got over to the Lairds at 11:30. Lou and I read and sewed awhile. Dinner at 2. There were 15 at table. Dr & Mrs. Sherman, some relatives from Northampton R, L & I. We had a dandy nine course dinner. Played cards, sang and danced until nine. Paul came for me and I stopped another hour with them at the Lathrops. We sang and danced there. My first Thanks- away from home. 1909 November Fri 26 Beautiful morning. Mrs. V. and I went down town and I had two dresses sent up for Bills inspection. I took my sewing over to Lou's in the afternoon. We read etc. She wasn't feeling at top notch. Letter from father Bill went to a dance last night with Mr. S. I wrote some letters. We sewed and visited in the eve. Paul went to choir rehearsal. 1909 November Sat 27 Perfectly lovely day and warm. I did some mending and met L down town at 10. We did errands all the morning got home at 12:30. We read sewed and played duets all afternoon. I sewed in the eve. Then walked over to Miss Vinings to telephone. Perfect night full moon. My dress and Mrs. V's suit came from Meekins. The Buz came with Thanksgiving news. 1909 November Sun 28 Lovely day. I went to church and wore my new dress. After church Lou, Miss Rugen and I walked awhile. It was like spring. Came home and read awhile. After dinner Mr. & Mrs. L., Dr. & Mrs. S. W, L, & I went out to a Mr. & Mrs. McKean's and spent the afternoon and evening. They have a fine Victor machine and the best records Scembrich, Camso, Melba etc. and played all afternoon. We had a dandy supper and started home at 8:30. Perfect moonlight night L & I walked in. Mrs. V & I read until 11. 1909 November Mon 29 I woke up with a miserable cold yesterday and hated to go to school. Miss W. came back with a dread- ful cold too. I came right home at 3. The R.R. didn't come. I lay on the sofa and read until dinner. I 'dosed' and went to bed at 7:30. Shorthand is getting complicated. I meant to have worked had thro this vacation but didn't. However my center-piece is coming on beautifully. Misty in the morning but cleared before night. 1909 November Tues 30 Lovely clear day but cool. I haven't felt as sick all over today as I did yester- day. But I have a bad head cold. Miss W, wasn't at school I'm afraid she is worse. I visited awhile with Miss L- and worked. Found a postal from Bill but no R.R. She didn't keep the dresses I sent. I studied all the evening and went to bed at nine. I haven't sewed a stitch since Sat. This cold has laid me up. 1909 December Wed 1 Nice sunny day. My supply of handkerchiefs is running low. Worked awhile after school. No R.R. yet don't understand it. Anchor ice in the mains shut off water today. Strike is still on at Ludlow. Employees won't go to work and their furniture is piled in the streets. My sympathies are with the company. Studied until dinner time. Mrs. V, Paul and I spent the evening with Mr. & Mrs. Empshal. We played 500, sang etc. Lovely night, but cool. 1909 December Thur 2 Beautiful clear day. I walked to school for the first time this week. My cold is settled and I have a huge sore in my nose of all interesting places. We are reading shorthand quotations from the board now. Its lots of fun. Mr. & Mrs. V. spent the day with her people. I studied 'till dinner time. Then dressed wore my pink silk to hear Shuman-Heink. L, Mrs T, & I sat together. Just grand. 1909 December Fri 3 23 Another nice day. I walk- ed to school. Stayed and worked real late on my shorthand. Found the R.R. when I got home. Mother directed it to Springfield Vt. That's why it was delayed. I sent that on then sewed all the evening on my center piece, its coming on finely. Mrs. V's sister Ada and Mrs. Babcock called. Had a bath late to bed. 1909 December Sat 4 Such a glorious day one would never dream that it is December. I did some mending and then sewed the rest of the day. Mrs. V. sewed on a shirt- waist. We went down town in the evening and did the shops the're very attract- ive with Xmas things. I read until quite late. There's a railroad strike on in the west that's quite serious. 1909 December Sun 5 Another summery day without a cloud. Mrs. V & I went to church then Lou and I walked awhile, we read in the afternoon. I stopped in the Sherman's on the way home. Mrs. V, Paul & I walked awhile in the even- ing, lovely night. I wrote to Aunt H. Jessie and some postals. 1909 December Mon 6 Another heavenly day. I worked late. Beauty takes lots of my time. We're having fun reading short- hand quotations put on the board by different ones. The R.R. came with lots of news. Bill is sick with a cold again. I wrote and sent it on and sewed the rest of the evening. 1909 December Tues 7 Walked to school and worked late. It was lovely in the morning but began to rain at about 2. Its a good thing as springs are low everywhere. It was dark when I got home. Found a letter from Aunt H. & card from Jule. Mr. V. is going to Boston tomorrow to have his joints manipulated. I sewed until 10 oclock and finished my center-piece with the ex- ception of the lace on the edge. 1909 December Wed 8 It poured in the night but was lovely this morn- ing I walked down. Worked until 4. New Etude tonight. Mr V. came home at 6:15 the dr. was out of town he will go again next week. We sewed all the evening. I finished my center piece and sew- ed on the lace and pressed it. It is a beauty if I do say it. Nice night but cooler. 1909 December Thur 9 Nice morning but decidedly colder. I walked down. Studied awhile before starting read 'the Melting Pot' by Israel Zang- will last night when I should have been working. Its fine. School is coming on. Two weeks from tonight I'll be at home. hooray! but I've a slew of things to do. U.S. is at war with Nicaragua. They killed two Americans. I sewed all the evening with Lou. Dr. Sherman was there we had lots of fun. Cold night. 1909 December Fri 10 Lovely morning but cold. I rode down and did some typewriting before school. July bookkeeping is going to be awful. We have to go to school five Saturdays to make up for Xmas vacation. Begin tomorrow. Wrote a postal home and sewed until after eleven. Studied awhile first. I'm reading another continued story in the Post. Cold night. 1909 December Sat 11 I rode to school early. We worked hard until one oclock. I helped Mrs. Vining make a maccaroon pudding after dinner. Sewed until 5 oclock. Then went over to Lou's for a minute and Mr. R. asked me to go down to the Worthy to dinner with them. I felt funny to go but they seemed to want me. Rachel was there when we got back and we played bridge till 9:30. Had a dandy dinner. Cold night. 1909 December Sun 12 A beautiful day but cool. I went to church. Miss Bates walked home with me. Mr. & Mrs. Empshal came to dinner also Miss Vining. We had a fine dinner and played and sang awhile then went for a walk. Mr. & Mrs. E. came back with us and I showed them my pictures and we visited Then I read and studied until bed time. Xmas presents are coming on. 1909 December Mon 13 Nice day I rode to school. Started my home letter on the typewriter. I worked until 4. Found the R.R. letter from Mr. Daley and Metz also Buzzes. I had a great old time reading. Finished my letter after dinner. Then sewed and studied un- til bed time. Metz is going home for Xmas and I'm so pleased. Mother is in bed with tonsilitis and Bill has had an sore in her head. Does seem as tho they are afflicted. 1909 December Tues 14 I came home from school feeling bum and out of sorts and wondering how the folks were. Found a postal from Bill saying that mother was better. I took my sew- ing over to Lou's, I'm mak- ing blue silk suit case covers for Belle and May started them last night and have nearly finished Belle's. 1909 December Wed 15 Mr. Vining went Boston to have his joints attended to. I found letters from May, Rob and Bill. Mother is O.K. again. R. spent last Sun. with Bernice in N. Haverhill where she is teaching. He is in a lumber camp 12 miles from there. I sewed all evening fin- ished Belle's and started on May's suit case cover. Cold night. 1909 December Thur 16 I worked quite late and stayed down to do errands. Lou telephoned and came over with her work in the evening. We all sewed I finished my covers and walked part way home with Lou. A week from tonight we'll be at home. Mr. V. had his ankles opera- ted upon and is as comfortable as can be expected. He wrote a cheerful letter. 1909 December Fri 17 I did up my package for Waller St. and walked to school. Bought a tie for Clay. Little Wynona Sherman has pneumonia. I banged around looking for something to send to the people at Vallejo. Finally got a picture hand colored for Mary. Got my package off to Seattle and sewed on a stationary case. Another letter from Mr. V. He is getting on well. 1909 December Sat 18 Cold morning there was a little snow on the ground. I was late to school. I stopped at Johnson's and bought a book for R. & M. and got my last Western package off. School until 1. I sewed until Mrs. V. was ready to go down town We met Mrs. Emsal and went to Meekins opening of their new suit department a little while then did errands. Mrs. V was late home I got Paul's supper. We sewed until late. 1909 December Sun 19 Slept quite late. We didn't go to church. I had a bath and a shampoo and did odd jobs. Went over to Lou's in the afternoon and we did some stencilling (sad to relate). I went down to the first church with Mrs. V and Paul to hear their Xmas music. It was fine they gave part of 'the Messiah'. I went to bed in fairly good season. 1909 December Mon 20 School as usual. I walked down. I hustled on my work and didn't stay long after school. Bought more burlap on the way home and met Lou coming over just as my car got to Jackson. She stayed all night and we worked hard until 11 oclock. I punch- ed brass and worked on stationery cases and Lou, stencilled two pairs of curtains, a pair of pillows and a portiere. The R.R. came. 1909 December Tues 21 We walked down to Mill St. and Lou took her car I walked the rest of the way to school. I did a few errands after school and made two suit case covers in the evening. Also finished a stationery case. Mrs. E was over. I got my package off to Grace & Theron met Lou down town and we shopped together. I punched on Mrs. V's shade until 12:45. I want to finish it. 1909 December Wed 22 I rode to school. Did one or two errands at noon. After school I got the finishings for my shade, and got a package off to Maurine. I took the shade over to Lou's to have her show me how to finish it. I finished it after I got home its a beauty if I do say it. We had lots of fun Althea Beal is with Lou going home for Xmas with her. 1909 December Thur 23 Mrs. V. had to go down town to get an express box off the Mr. V. I packed and dressed leisurely. We had dinner at 11:15 and I went down to school to get my other suit case. Mr. P. carried one over with me. Miss Beal was there we had lots of fun coming up. Worked on our pillows. Seemed awfully good to get home. Went down town with Bill in the evening. Saw lots of people. Bill and I talked until 1 oclock. 1909 December Fri 24 I dusted and worked around the house all the morning. Mother and I went down town after dinner and did some lasts errands. I waited until after six to meet Metz but the train was awfully late. We went to the Xmas exercises. They were fine Robert was in some tableaux. The boys were crazy over Santa Claus. It seemed awfully good to see Metz and everyone else. The new baby is lovely. 1909 December Sat 25 Mother and I worked around and trimmed the tree and made candy. We all went over to Guy's for dinner. We had a fine dinner. Then we came back and had our tree. The children were delighted. We had slews of things. I had a sillk umbrella, opera bag, handkerchiefs, books, candy etc. Bill and I called at the Brookses, Mortons, Hollises, Masons, Clara's Aunt Julia's and the Metzgers. Its snowed a little toward night. 1909 December Sun 26 Snowy day. We went to church all but mother who has a cold. Stayed in all the afternoon, Bill washed her hair. It stormed all afternoon. We made Welch Rarebit. Then went down for the mail and down to Catherines. Stayed until after nine. Stopped in at Jim and Mary's a while. Bed in good season. 1909 December Mon 27 Dusted around the house and picked up. Then wrote some New Year cards. Mother and I fixed over two shirt waists that weren't right as to the sleeves. I went down town late in the afternoon to mail some letters. Awfully cold. Guy went to University Club. Grace came over and we played 500. Mother has a miserable cold. I was awfully tired and didn't feel very well. Went to bed at 10:30. Cold night. 1909 December Tues 28 I was sick all night and woke up sick. Think I took cold and it went to my stomach, as I haven't eaten any- thing to hurt me. I wanted to do so much as Lou, Marge & Althea are coming up tomorrow. Could only sit around all day Managed to write a letter put away the presents and pick up some but vomited most of the time. Alice Mc was over awhile. I was sick up to 10:30 Then slept by spells. Cold night. 1909 December Wed 29 Cold frosty morning. I got up at 3:45 and took an egg in milk. Felt pretty weak all day couldn't do stunts. 20° below in some places last night. M & A came on the 7:20. I went down while they bowled. L. came on the 3. The others went snowshoe- ing. We had a party. 12 girls in the evening. Everyone seemed to have a good time. Still cold I am better but wobbly still. We had rabbit, hot chocolate etc. 1909 December Thur 30 Mother feels bum. I am better. We worked around the house all the morning and sewed a little. We were all invited down to Uncle Jasper's for dinner no supper. Mother & I started at 3 oclock. I stopped to see Nell. We had a fine supper and an awfully good visit. We played games & sang. John brought us all home. Moon- light and lovely but colder than Greenland's Icys. 1909 December Fri 31 Bill's birthday and the last day of old 1909. Sewed; and did house work the children were over. I went to the Dentists at four oclock. R.C. came on the 5:19. We all went to the Fireman's. Rubber took Bill. We went to choir rehearsal first. Had a dandy time danced all the time until 1:45. Cold night. There was a big crowd there someone said over 400 in the hall. I counted 62 couples in the march. This is the last of 1909 the yr. of my trip west.
