Capitol Hill Washington D.C.Wed. Oct 29th 1862My Dear Sister -
I have nothing particular to write but thinking George might be glad to hear
where we were &c before he starts I thought I would write a line this
morning. The weather has been quite cool since we arrived, but is warmer this
morning. I dont think of anything that I want that I have not got, so Geo. will
not have to bring any thing for me. I find that dressing gowns a very handy
thing. We have got a small stove in our tent, the one that came in our mess
chest. The chest cost pretty high but is a handy
thing. I hope we
shall get regulated at last so as not to have to be buying all the time. I
expect to be out of money long before we get paid any thing but I dont much care
if I am I can get along some way. We are buying camp stools, officers
Haversacks, canteens, &c. but when we get once surplied that will be the end
of it. We all three live in one tent but are going to have another one soon, I
shall detail Johnson as soon as we get so as to live seperately I think he will be a good hand. You know the Capt. has Hi detailed.
– The boys are all well so far & the Dr says
that if they can stand what we have had so far to begin with, that
he thinks they will all live well enough. They rode all the way from
Philadelphia in old bagage cars and it rained nearly all the way, & was
mighty cold. They were crowded in about as thick as they could stand & had a
rough time. We did not get any tents until after dark the night we got here
& then had to pitch them as quick as possible & sleep without straw or
any thing but the ground. I am in a great hurry this morning so shall not write
much. I will endevor to keep a kind of journal & send
you once in
2 or 3 weeks so you may know just how we are getting
along better than a letter once in a while will tell you. I have written this
just as fast as I could make my hand go so I dont know what I have written &
cant stop to read it. I am perfectly well. Love to all.
With much love
Your Aff Borther Jos. Spafford
P.S. to day is going to be a very pleasant day-
If you want to know any thing ask questions as you used to. I dont know what to write unless you do.
