Camp _____ Va.Sunday Dec. 8th 1861.My Dear Sister –
I recd yours and mothers letter night before last and tho’ I have nothing
particular to write will write a line today. – I suppose before this reaches you
you will have seen Capt. Atherton, as he expected to arrive in Cavendish last
friday night. He can you all about me, and the rest of us, better than I can
write it. I sent my picture by him, let me know how you like it. We have moved
since he left, into a pine woods, about a mile and a half from the old
camp. Tis a beautiful place we are in now, and I should think, a healthy
place. – I heard the Adjt say the other night, that he had written to Capt. A.
to recruit for this Regt. We want three or four in our Co. and I hope he will
get some of the fellows I know. Those Demary ought to
come, at least one of them. Would’nt I like to see Tom K. & Charley K. among
the recruits?
I saw Laurence, the daguerreotype man from Chester to day here. He is going to
taking pictures in the 2d Vt Regt. He said he saw the Dr. about two weeks ago.
To day is a warm, (I might almost say hot) beautiful day here, a man is more comfortable in his shirt sleaves
than with his coat on. –
This paper is so poor my pen keeps sticking through it. –
I sent your letter to L. so she will get the word straight from you. –
Where is Homer White? Has he been home? I have not heard from him since we first came to Chain Bridge Have you started the box that has been spoken about.
I have nothing more in particular to write & will close for this time.
Good bye Your Aff brotherJo.
P.S. I have recd both those papers and the mittens. J.
P.S. 2d Who is teaching our school this winter? Is it a female teacher? Who boards my two weeks?
