I arrived here last night about 8 o’clock, all right. The boys were very glad to see me. As soon as it was known in the c. I had come, some one got the boys all up round Lieut. Griggs tent, very quietly and the first I knew then was there rousing good cheers given for Lieut. Henry. The boys thought I had come to be their Captain, and I must confess I have been sorely tempted to day, for the boys refuse to take “no” for an answer. They got up a paper and all signed it and went to the Col. to have him ask me to be commissioned Capt. If it had not been for you I certainly should have accepted, but I have had to say “no” for your sake. Now you must give me considerable credit, for it was hard to hear the poor fellows plead with me, saying they were going to be left alone. I felt sorry for them - they feel very bad about losing their Captain. The Elixir has not got along yet, but I am satisfied I am going to sell lots of it, and some wringers. Nash came up with me but will go back in the morning. We have made a good arrangement with the firm in Washington we expected to. Boys all well. Will write a good letter in a day or two. Write me to care J. B. Barr & Co 9th St. W.
